781.0. "Atari Lynx?" by CSC32::J_PARSONS (George Stark: Not A Very Nice Guy) Thu Feb 22 1990 15:08

Is there any discussion here about the Atari Lynx videogame system? I was told
in some other conferences that there were some notes in this conference but I
can't find them anywhere.

Thanks,

Jack

We just got one and ITS GREAT. The photos in the game mags don't do the color
display justice.

The only graphical problem (actually non problem) is that there seems to ba a
small "trail" behind things that move quickly (the young lady in the intro to
California Games). I believe this can be attributed to the turn off time needed
by the LCD. Other than that, this is some of the best color I have seen
including on a color TV based game system.

If you get one, there is a really neat (non shootumup) game called Chips
Challenge out for it.

Electronics Boutique (where my wife works) is carrying them but only according
to the ATARI distribution plans. ATARI is working out from the New Your area.

Mid February (Real soon now }8-)} ) They are supposed to be comming into the
Boston and Los Angeles area. In mid March (I think) will be San Francisco
and Philadelphia (I am not sure about the West Coast targets, but there are
east/west pairs). They seem to be widening their distribution by 2 major population
centers per month.

There are EB's in Phesant Lane Mall in Nashua, Burlington Mass mall and
Peabody Mass (am not sure of the shoping center) and others in Western Mass
and Southern Mass.

I have not been past Toys-R-Us (TM) or Kaybee but they are supposed to
eventually getting them too.

Freight was $170 range. Includes power adapter (which I think is in $20 range
for Game boy). Also the max machines which can be "networked (cable included
with each machine) is determined by the Game support, not the hardware.

Games seem to be in the $35 range (retail) and are in 2" square (1/8" thick)
rom packs. A real bugger to store without loosing.

I wonder if they will put up 8 player maze wars ??

re. .3 (availability in the UK),

I saw my first Lynx at the weekend in Dixons. I had a brief play with it,
and I was impressed at the quality of the display. In fact the general build
quality seems pretty good (it needs to be the way these will get treated by
kids at Xmas time !).

The price was 180 pounds, which includes the California Games card (BMX,
Skateboard, surfing and a footbag game). I don't know whether this includes
the power supply or not, and they don't have any price or availability for
extra cards.

Hope this helps,

    Derek.

EB in Nashua and Burlingtom Mass have Lynx.

I have also heard that ToysRUs in Manchester has it.

The Lynxes in the US come with an AC adaptor, so I would suspect that
    the European model would too.

I looove my Lynx. I just got "Chip's Challenge" a few days ago.
Wonderful game! And the mandelbrot explorer "easter egg" that's on
the cart, is a sweet bonus.
