738.0. "Another MAC emulator issue" by KETJE::VANDEVYVER (Luc Van de Vyver 856-7577) Mon Jan 15 1990 21:24

    Hi Atari-guys

I've got a set from ALADIN to run MAC software on the ST.
The problem is ... the version of the SYSTEM and FINDER.

The SYSTEM suplied with the kit seems to be V2.0
Is this the latest version that ALADIN released? or are there any
    updates available?
And while I'm asking, can the 64k roms be updated with 128 versions?

Another problem is exchanging MAC diskettes. I've checked this notes,
and it seems EXChanger would do the job, but ... EXChanger is about the
    same price as ALADIN !!!
Any cheaper solutions around, maybe on the MAC itself?

I know, you get what you pay, but ... anyway, I try my luck with you
    ...

    All help very much appreciated,

    Luc

738.1no easy way to goBERN01::RUGGIEROTue Jan 16 1990 05:5626
Let me help you.

Aladin exists in the Version 3.0 since more than one year. This version
supports sound (great and I think better than the sound of Spectre) and
the harddisk (slower than Spectre). On the Macside system version 4 is
supported. Aladin only works with the 64k ROMs. The current version 3 does
not support the newer 128k ROMs. Rumours say that they are working on it but
I never received any information about from Softpaquet (the makers of Aladin).

Datatransfer between Aladin and the Mac must be done via a serial line. It is
not possible that Aladin reads or writes Mac diskettes neither the other way
round. The EXchanger is a hardware add-on that lets Aladin copy entire disks
back and forth between the two formats but does not give you runtime file
access. This is solved with the new Spectre GCR. It is a pitty but Aladin
and Spectre use different native disk formats. So datatransfer even between
them is not easy.

If you have any other question just aks. As an owner of both emulators I know
them very good.

ps
Very strange LSPascal runs under Aladin but complains about some memory
blockage when running under Spectre
738.2Which version is what ?KETJE::VANDEVYVERLuc Van de Vyver 856-7577Tue Jan 16 1990 07:2522
Markus,

thanks for your clear explanation, but I'm still strugling with versions.

Apparantly version 2 refers to Aladin version, in which some 5.x versions
of the FINDER are supported. But what version of SYSTEM is it?
Or is it not important since the system is Aladin?

Which system/finder versions are supported in version 3 of Aladin?

Can you please explain what you mean by "On the Macside system version 4 is
supported" ?

One last question (I hope) :
Is, at you knowledge, the german (or dutch) company still offering
upgrade/update service ?

If not, how can an upgrade be done?

Thanks again

Luc

System versions on the Macintosh, oh boy, what a mess...

Aladin: current version 3.0

On the Macintosh part of the system software resides in the ROMs (the so called
toolbox and other things) and another part is on disk. You need at least two
files a) the 'system' that is the diskbased extension to the toolbox and
b) the 'finder' witch is just a program. It is responsible for the desktop.

Underlying these software levels there is still more: all the routines that
manipulate the hardware. These routines must be there even before the
computer 'mac-boots' up. They are provided by Aladin.

The Apple numbering scheme for system software releases is somewhat strange.
Only with the last couple of releases the became consistent.

Aladin version 2 supports the Mac system v2/Finder V5
Aladin version 3 supports the Mac system v3.2 and v4.1 /Finder v5

Concerning updates I don't know. You'd better ask Softpaquet. If there is no
easy (cheap) way for you I might sell my Aladin. As I stated in my former reply
I run Spectre and do not use Aladin anymore.

Hope this helps

738.5Printer Output for GCRCRATE::WAKEHAMWed Jan 17 1990 13:1710
    Hi there,

Thank you for the information on GCR. My problem is how do I get post-
script output from my ST4 running say quark express to my ATARI SLM804
laser printer (or directly to an Applewriter if I had one).

Maybe the solution for the ATARI laser is ultrascript (not released yet
here in the UK, like to know where I can get it from).

And finally is there any form of Apply talk possible for networks etc.

    Well-known problem...

Right now, you have to use the LaserWriter dialog box to write a
postscript file (option-F, I think), exit to GEM, use the conversion
program to get the file into the GEM file system and run Ultrascript.

    Yecch, right?

re printing:

The Spectre version 2.3 (that's the version that comes with the GCR cartridge)
supports the Atari laser printer. I do not own one so I can not try it out.
Built-in into the Spectre is a so called printer interceptor that can be
activated by some keystrokes and prints directly on the Atari laser.

re Apple talk:

I have heard that a German firm is currently developping a hardware extension
that allows you to run Appletalk. Advertised as 'coming soon'. No more info
available at the moment.
