-< ATARI games and the IBM PC... >-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Greetings everybody .. and Happy (coming) New Year!

My 9-years old son has a ATARI 1040 but I know nothing about it (or
ATARI in general for that matter) so I thought to ask in this
    conference few questions.

    1) which games are available in PD and where?
    2) if they are ARCed, which de-ARC program should I use and where do I
       found it?
    3) how do I write ATARI like diskette on my IBM-PC XT clone
which is the only one I can use to login to my VAXstation from home?
Where do I get the related software from?
(N.B. I can not use KERMIT between the IBM PC and ATARI)
    4) assumed that a program (or driver) exists which allows me to prepare
ATARI 1040 like diskette on a IBM PC, do I do correctly if I use
KERMIT to transfer a ATARI file from the VAX to my IBM PC?
If not, how should I do?

    Thanks for your help, Costantino.

I was hoping that someone who actually does MSDOS -> ST transfers would
answer this. However, let's give it a go...

    1) PD games for the ST are plentiful but I don't know of a place on the
DEC easynet which collects games for the ST. There are a dozen areas
on the net that I know of where people are keeping ST stuff online.
If anyone has a directory for ST games online please step forward
       and identify yourself.

The NaVAUS club has several diskettes of PD games. See note 461.3
for a pointer to the listing and more details.

Usually the ST magazines have games in each issue.

    2) If compressed, the PD items are probably ARCed. ARC is available on
the net. See answer number 4 for more information.

    3) As far as I know a diskette written in either 360K (SS) or 720K (DS)
format by an IBM PC under PCDOS can be read directly by the ST
without any special program. Diskettes to be used for this purpose
should be formatted under DOS rather than the ST.

    4) You should be able to download the ST files from VAX to PC by
treating them as binary. COPY and read the excellent download help
       file by Jeff Lomicka  PRNSYS::DUA1:[LOMICKAJ.HOBBY.ST]XFERINTRO.TXT

This file also tells you where you can get ARC.

Welcome to the world of ATARI ST. Let us know if you need any help.

Note 613.* talks about the details of moving files from a PC to the ST.

After reading 613.*, I successfully copied games from AQUA, OLDTMR and
PRNSYS to my VAX, used Kermit on my VAXmate to copy the ARC files to
hard disk, used PKUNPAK to de-ARC them, copied them to a 5.25"
diskette, then took them to a friend who has an IBM PC clone with both
5.25 and 3.5 inch disks, formatted a 3.5" as 720K, copied the files,
loaded the disk into the ST, and it worked!

To get PKUNPAK for the VAXmate or IBM clone, copy it from:

    CSCMAS::SYS$MSDOS:[ARC-LBR]PK361.EXE

Run PK361.EXE under MS-DOS, and it will create PKPAK and PKUNPAK for
    you, along with documentation.

We recently got a DECstation 316 with both types of diskette drive in
the office, and I have successfully used that to do the transfer, as
well. One important note - the DECstation 316 3.5" drive defaults to
1.44MB, and you must run the SETUP316 program to set it to 720K before
    initialising and copying the files.
