657.0. "ST as an X-10 controller" by SSDEVO::MARKS () Fri Nov 03 1989 21:27

    I have a 520ST, and was wondering if there is a product that I can buy
    which would allow me to use my 520ST as a controller for X-10 home
    control modules. (X-10 modules plug into the outlet, then
    appliances/lights plug into the module. The module itself is
    controlled by sending commands to each individually adressable module
    over the house wiring).

    Also, is public domain software available for such an interface, if the
    software is not provided by the mfgr. of the interface?

    	Thanks,
    	Randy

DAK used to sell such a beast for $19.95. I have one. Michtron sells
a software package that controls it. I don't know of any PD ones available.

On the UTILITIES.009 disk in the NAVAUS library is a program called X10DEMO
which claims to allow programming the X-10 from your ST.

657.3Does it need hardware??SSDEVO::MARKSMon Nov 13 1989 18:054

657.4You need some peice of hardware to connect house wiringOLDTMR::WALLACEMon Nov 13 1989 18:3614
I have not used the X10DEMO software nor have I ever used X10
modules/controllers so I can't offer any other information. Also since I am no
longer the maintainer of that library I do not have the resources to try out
the program or read the documentation (if any) on it.

However it does sound like you need some kind of controller which modulates
the commands out onto your 110v house wiring. The ST can not do that without
some added hardware. I presume that the program in question "merely" sends
appropriate commands out over the serial line to the controller which it
assumes is going to in turn pass the commands out onto the house wiring.

  Sorry,

    Thanks for the info. I've copied x10demo.arc and will de-arc it at
    home tonight and read the doc file.
