501.0. "Roll paper wanted please." by UKCSSE::KEANE () Thu Jun 08 1989 15:22

    Hello,

    Before I take a hacksaw to my plotter, to convert it into a cut sheet
    machine, I wouuld like to make a last desperate appeal for information,
    since I would prefer to keep the beast looking smart and not hacked
    about.

    DOES anyone know, and can give me the phone number of a stockist,
    anywhere in the world for the following.:-

    1) Roll paper for a RICOH GP15 printer/plotter. The Ricoh number is R015
    for the paper. It is a roll 15 inches wide, with sprocket holes at 14.5
    inches apart, and 0.5 inch pitch.

    2) Spare "FISHER SPACE PEN" ballpoint refills. (bog standard except I want
    four colors if possible).

    (This is the reason a nearly new, plotter that should have cost several
    hunderd pounds only cost me 50 pounds!!!!)

    Its my own fault, I was so overcome with greed at the thought of obtaining
    a cheap plotter, I neglected to stop and say to myself: :WHY WHY WHY
    is it so cheap " The guy who sold it carefully only said he had not got
    any paper for it, not he could not get paper for it!

    I have obviously tried Ricoh UK, I get referred to various stockists
    who refer me to other stockists, by the time I get to the stockist +n I
    get referred back to RICOH. In short I believe there aint no 15inch roll
    paper in the world, I hope I'm wrong.

501.1maybe Unisys or NCRCSOA1::FISHERAl FisherThu Jun 08 1989 21:098
    Both Burroughs (now Unisys) and NCR (the cash register company)
    used to manufacture wide carriage mechanical accounting machines. You
    may try calling them to see about a source for such paper. There
    used to be wide carriage teletypes as well. Keep trying -- someone's
    got to have it.

    Pat..

    The other places worth calling are some of the Computer Paper
    specialists they have all sorts of wierd things. I even saw continous
    Micky Mouse Labels once. Two names that spriong to mind are compuprint
    or Norprint.. These may be based north of Watford. Try the Yellow
    pages..

501.3The pen jams in the perforations!UKCSSE::KEANEFri Jun 09 1989 08:5035
    re .2
    Hi Paul,

    I had a go round the yellow pages (Reading) already. I started with the
    computer paper suppliers, then tried office suppliers and finally tried
    drawing office suppliers. I can get any quantity of film and cut sheet
    for HP or any of the common plotters, I can also get ROLL PAPER,
    however its for Benson plotters and its four feet wide. I got a lot of
    cooperation from some of the stokists. They actually took the trouble
    to look at some of the paper vendors stock lists for me. The same
    message came over time after time. Never heard of 15 inch wide roll!

    I took the plotter apart last night and sketched out the way to turn it
    into a sheet feed plotter. To do this to the plot mechanism is quite
    simple. A couple of new ally side plates and two brackets, rotate the
    mechanism thro 90 degrees, add a couple of pressure rollers and bobs
    your uncle. The only bummer is that the power supply for the beast is
    mounted behind the plot mechanism. With a roll feed the paper misses
    the PS, with a flat bed sheet feed, the power supply will have to come
    out of the box, and be put into another case ALA my ST. I already have
    the ST and my modem pwer supplies on the floor under my desk, so
    another one can only add to keeping my feet warm in the winter.

    However I would rather not have to do this, please keep the replies
    coming in!! (I will try some of the other computer firms although they
    are difficult to approach.) I was told by the agent for RICOH that ICL
    used to market this plotter, and ICL supplies kept the consumables. So
    I rang ICL, yes they recognised the plotter, no they didnt keep paper,
    no they didnt know where I could buy it, the girl slammed down phone. I
    can see why customers can get pissed off with big company telephone
    behaviour very quickly!

    Cheers for now

    Pat K.
501.4Try DECdirect?LDP::WEAVERLaboratory Data Products/ScienceFri Jun 09 1989 21:295
    Try calling DECdirect. We used to sell a roll paper attachment
    for the LA34, DECdirect may have a source for the paper (maybe even
    have some in stock, although I am not sure of the size).
