469.0. "Floppy Sources?" by IOSG::HAYESJ () Mon May 08 1989 13:46

    Does anyone out there have details of a reliable source of CHEAP
    floppies (or rigids as they perhaps should better be called)? I'm in
    Reading, with a home in Uxbridge, though mail order is likely to be the
    answer (hence 'reliable').

    Any help app'd.

469.1HSV is your shop!!CSSEE2::KEANEMon May 08 1989 14:5617
    Hi,

    Do you mean a reliable source of cheap floppies or a source of cheap
    reliable floppies ??

    I cannot find either in Reading !! The cheapest I found is that shop in
    the covered arcade off Friar Street, down towards the station. However
    that guy wanted 12:50 for 10 DS unbranded!. I normally ttake a trip to
    Blazinstoke and go to HSV where I get 20 DS unbranded for 16 quid or
    so. I have bought dozens from him so far, I have only had a couple of
    duds! He is actually a MAIL order house, but Ive never used the MAIL
    order as he is local to me. You can find him in Yellow pages for
    Guilford  (BAsingstokes Area)

469.2Take in a show.VANDAL::GRIFFITHMon Jun 04 1990 14:0010
   I go to most of the ATARI Computer shows, and the prices for disks
has been steadily dropping over the years (even without buying in bulk).

   This weekend, I went to the show at Hammersmith where I got a box of 10
Verbatim DS/DD for 6.50 ! (These are the "guarentee'd for life ones.)

   Even if you can't get to the shows, yourself, it should be possible to find
someone to get you some.

in the US, MEI now sells DSDD for $0.39 each

Chad

PS: I've used them in the past with great success
469.5More on MEIOLDTMR::WALLACEMon Jun 11 1990 16:0911
FYI: MEI disk were ok "in the past" BUT the ones they have been shipping for
$.39 are not good quality (at least not all of them :-). I've tried a couple
recently and had to format four disks before I got two that had no bad
sectors. I've also read similiar reports on usenet about MEI's more recent
cheap floppy disks.

If you want cheap disks then go for it, but if you want reasonable quality
then you may want to reconsider (at least until MEI starts shipping good
quality disks again.

469.6Sony disks at a reasonable pricePRNSYS::LOMICKAJJeffrey A. LomickaMon Jun 11 1990 17:4710
I get my floppies from Damark Inc. (800) 729-9000, a "surplus" mail
order company, usually selling yuppie consumer goods.

Damark Item #B-458-129619 is 100 Sony DSDD floppies, bulk unlabelled
$69.99 plus Shipping & handling $6.50.  These are genuine Sony's, I've
used many of them, and they are always reliable.

They also sell in quantity 50 disks item # B-458-129601 $49.99 Shipping
$5.50, but I always get them by the hundred.

469.7anyway, your mileage may vary.NORGE::CHADTue Jun 12 1990 15:1613
More about MEI

About 6 weeks ago a friend of mine ordered 250 MEI at $0.39 each. I don't
know how many he used but he didn't report any problems (he was copying my
sampler sound library (legally)). His were blue. I just received 100 from
them at the same price. I haven't tried them yet (the new ones). They
are beige/tan. Point is, they have different batches so it is hard to say
that they are cr*ppy quality or not. I will report about mine when I back
up the Mac's HD.

MEI does guarantee them however -- they will replace any bad ones.

    I suggest Discount Computer Supplies in U.K. Their phone number
    is 0634-831970 and as the name suggest you can get all your supplies
    from them. Not all that cheap though but good branded stuff.

469.11other places tooNORGE::CHADThu Jun 14 1990 14:1810
Looking through COMPUTER SHOPPER I also noticed a lot of other places selling
bulk generic 3 1/2 DSDD diskettes for about 39 cents each plus porto, usually
in packs of 50.

also, one place had bulk SONY for 59 cents each plus porto.

Sorry, it wasn't my computer shopper so I can't post names

Chad

Dan are you sure that Computer products had HD disks at $0.39 each
that seems low for bulks for HD disks. DD go for that

Chad
469.14I was half right...MIDI::DANDan Gosselin, CUP EngineeringThu Jun 14 1990 18:374
The .39 price is for 5.25" HD floppies.  It's .79 for the 3.5" HD's.
