399.0. "RPM Checker?" by VINO::BHAMILTON (Buzz Hamilton) Wed Feb 22 1989 13:19

    Does anyone have an RPM checker for the floppy drive? I know there
    is some belief that many of the drives are not adjustable. I see
    two 'pots' there and hope one might do the rick.

(that's Trick)
    I now have two EPYX games that don't work right and believe that
    it might be that the copy protection scheme relies on disk RPM.

    WORLD GAMES has several events, the first two of which (outside
    edge of diskette?) won't load. CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING just keeps
    rebooting after two seconds of music.

    I'm looking for an upload or pointer to a PD RPM checker.

I've heard some do exist, but that you should beware since some of them
report the wrong RPM.

Funny you should ask, since two days ago I was checking the RPM of my two
floppy drives, and I had never done that before. The program to do that
came out of a recent article in START, and was written by Dave Small, of
Magic Sac fame. One of my drives checked out at 299 RPM and the other
was about 297 RPM. Small stated that anything within the range 295-305
was probably good. You start getting lots of problems when the speed
goes over 305, since the first and last sectors on a track tend to
overlap. Slower speeds may just cause compatibility problems when
swapping disks with other users.

I wonder if club librarians check their disk speed? This should be a
MUST if they distribute disks to lots of other users.

    This librarian does not check his disk speed regularly, but it does
    sound like a good idea.

    so Don, could you upload Mr. Small's program for me? Please?

    I checked my drive using Dave Small's program from START because
    I was unable to get 10 sector disks to work. The program reported
    304 to 305. I have been waiting for a good time to fiddle with the
    pots to see if either of them do the job.

    I'll let you known what happens.
399.5Sorry, its not public domainTEA::PETERSDon Peters, CTS1-2/H6, 287-3742Thu Feb 23 1989 15:309
re .3, which in turn was re .1:

Well, I'd love to do it, but START is one of those publishers that say
their material is NOT public domain. ST-Log lets you share their stuff
after a short period of time, so I could do it if it were published there.

So, once again, the issue may be whether or not such a program exists in
the Public Domain. I don't know of one, but possibly Ray Wallace, the
ABACUS librarian does.
399.6I've got oneLEVERS::LANDRYFri Feb 24 1989 00:289
	A public domain speed checker can be found at
	LEVERS::USER$457:[LANDRY.ST.PUBLIC]SPEED.ARC

	This came on a PD disk catalog disk from AccuSoft.
	I have no idea of the accuracy but it says my disk
	is right on at 300 RPM.

    I opened up my drive yesterday. The sticky label says CHINON. On
    the botton of the drive, next to the hub are two pots, VR1 and VR2.
    Turning VR2 about 30 degrees anti-clockwise slowed the drive down
    from 306 to 300rpm.

    Good luck everyone.
