389.0. "ELITE editor" by BREW11::LANE (Can't think of anything yet..) Tue Jan 31 1989 06:30

A friend of mine came up with the following information, which I
    thought I would pass on.

The game ELITE contains a built-in editor for editing the commander
file that is in memory, allowing you to poke in values for anything.
I am not sure, but I think that when you edit a file it may stop
you from doing any of the missions.
I have protected the info with a form-feed for those who would consider
    it a spoiler.

I've looked through the notes and I havn't seen anything on this
so I hope this is new info.

   Regards

    Roger

Firstly, boot the elite disc. when it asks for the word from the
manual type in SARA<cr>, then type in the word from the manual.
Either use the default commander or load one. At any point in the
game (apart from when docking with or leaving the station) press
the asterisk key on the numeric keypad. You then have a display
that is actually a hex dump of the commander file, which you can
now edit. To return to the game hit esc.

389.1What's this about missions?PRNSYS::LOMICKAJJeff LomickaTue Jan 31 1989 14:1414
What IS this stuff about missions? I've got over 22 hours of play
time, according to the Elite clock, I'm rated "competent" (Fugitive, of
course), I've warped into my second galaxy, which looks and feels just
like the first (I expected the price ranges to be different, at least,
but everything is the same except the names of the planets.) and I
haven't heard a peep about missions. Is this something that happens
once you rate Elite?

I've gotten tired of buying things, and have taken to making my
credits by bounty and by capturing cargo canisters and, especially,
alien items.

(I finally, after many tries, successfully mined an asteroid for a piddly
1KG of minerals.)

    Hello Jeff,
There are five missions(I think) in this version of ELITE (the
BBC micro had two), but I only know of one person who has had one
and he is into several days of gameplay and in the eighth galaxy.
I have it on half rumour that they don't start until you are at least
deadly. I agree about the galaxy differences(lack of....) but I
find piracy in anarchic systems pretty hoopy.

I haven't seen any signs of a mission on the ATARI version either.

In my BEEB days, I did get offered a mission - a special message
appears after docking. I don't recall what status level. The message
asks you to destroy a special type of ship last seen at <place>.

Thereafter you charge around trying to catch the blighter. But its
always 1 or 2 jumps ahead. After a few hours chase, it appears from
nowhere, armed to the teeth, with very strong shields and gunning
for you!. However, once you get on its tail its fairly sluggish
and you can follow it fairly easily, blagging away - 2 minutes or so,
taking care not to overheat your (military) lasers - until finally
    you zap it.

Result - a message thanking you for your help and a promise of future
missions. I never got that far though.

389.4currently on mission #5.KOBAL::GLEASONI'd rather be playing ELITE!Tue Jan 31 1989 20:0711
There definitely ARE missions on the ST version; I'm on my 5th one at
the moment. I heard somewhere that there are 7 total; don't know if
it's true. The mission mentioned in .3 sounds like the first one. I
was "competent" and had logged about 24 hours of game time when I was
asked to undertake it. I'm only "dangerous" now, so I'm not sure what
criteria are used to determine when missions are offered.

Re: .0 -- sounds like you're about due for mission #1!

Yep once again a definite YES there are missions....but I haven"t
    done one.

    Spoiler (Sort of)

If you examine the disk with a Sector editor
    ( DL11 etc. )
the only text bits you can read are...the missions
..do a search on banks to get to the right area.

It can't be just rating. My kid is Deadly and clean with mega credits
and has never been sent on a mission. He has been into a number
    of other galaxies too.

    Re .1

On the BBC version, the first mission only started if you where
in Galaxy ONE. Eager people who blew money for fun & jumped to
Galaxy TWO early on missed out.

Save the Galaxtic Hyperspace until you NEED it !

389.8Cobra MkIII, its three year mission ....WARNUT::KAYDWORM-mode noterWed Mar 04 1992 10:0213
Well, three years on and some of us are just starting to get into this game !

Does anyone have a definitive answer about the circumstances under which
missions are offered ? I've logged about 27hours of mission time, I am
rated 'Dangerous' and have about 20,000 credits (why bother with more?).

Myself and a colleague are hooked on this game, but we're both getting a
bit fed up waiting for the missions to start !

Cheers,

    Derek.
