373.0. "ST RULES, O.K (In Europe!)" by RDGENG::KEANE () Fri Jan 13 1989 13:19

    Hi,

Yesterday I was in Munich, whilst browsing the magazine rack at
the newsstand in Munich Airport, I came across the technical magazine
rack. There were a large number of different general electronic type
mags, but in the computer section were two different P.C. magazines,
one Amstrad type, one Amiga type, one Mac type and FIVE different ATARI ST
magazines and one 8 bit Atari mag. It may have been just the time
of the month when this proportional distribution of titles occurred,
but it must reflect the amazing amount of interest in Atari St's
in Germany and also in Europe. Whilst I was attempting to read one
without having to buy it (newstand library), two people selected
ST mags from the rack. When one guy saw I was reading about the
ST large screen monitor he stopped and commented that his friend had
one, they were great, all the software ran OK on it, he wanted one
but it was very expensive, $2000.

A friend of mine travelled to England this past Fall and returned
with two ST magazines. I was impressed by the format of these issues.
They looked like MacUser or PC magazine. I was just a *little*
envious. I guess they have more to report on over there. Still...
    hope springs eternal.
373.2Perhaps a reason to learn german?IJSAPL::KLERKTheo de KlerkFri Jan 13 1989 20:516
Yes, Atari has *many* magazines in W-Germany, about 3 in Holland.
It's funny to note that most UK mags seem to spend about half their
mags in describing games. In comparison with the german mags: they
don't talk about them at all or only upto about 20%

A friend of mine travels to the UK and Japan quite a bit on business.
I was amazed at the state of the art (if the ads are to be believed) of
the European Atari and Amiga software. The magazines are slick
glossy affairs wiith lots of commentary and reviews. The screen
shots look far better than most of the stuff available in the States.
(The exception is Psygnosis and Rainbird, who seem to create the
    best graphics)

If you really want to get depressed, wait until you see the new
16-bit (68000 based) game machines coming from Nintendo, Sega and
NEC later this year. My friend brought back 16-bit Sega and Nintendo
machines with a few game cards. These guys are absolutely outdoing
the arcade machines. I've never seen such high speed colorful
animation in my life. These systems made StarGlider II look pathetic.
The Sega system boasts stereo sound, 512 colors on screen at once,
64 sprites, laser disk port, blah blah...

I'd not want to give up my keyboard, hard drive, etc, but the state
of the art in game hardware looks like it may be coming from Japan.

I have a Nintendo and a Sega. There is no way the sound and graphics
are as good as the amiga but the games are a bit funner.

I suggest you re-read .3, you missed the point entirely!

Matt, I was talking about new 16 bit machines that aren't yet available
outside of Japan. These systems are beyond belief.

I think that the current Sega and Nintendo systems are about on
a par with the state of the art Atari 800 and C'64 games.
