I have WordUp V1.30 (is this the version you mean?); the README file
contained only a few minor enhancements and didn't list bugs fixed. I
can upload and post or mail the file if you want details.

Yes, I would like to see what they have done to Wordup. Also any
impressions you have on Wordup V1.30 would also be great.

Thanks

While I can't offer any info contrasting WordUp with other GDOS word
processors, I'm impressed with WordUp. I haven't measured it's speed
accurately because I use it with G+PLUS (GDOS replacement) and
Turbo-ST (software blitter), but speed hasn't been a problem. WordUp
has all of the features I anticipate needing in a word processor, and
it can be configured to support a large variety of printers. It does
NOT do PostScript output, though. You can use any GDOS fonts with it,
and if you buy the Fontz! utility (from the same company), you can
convert MAC, Amiga, and a few other types of fonts to GDOS format (and
edit the ones you have, if you like).

WordUp is not intended for desktop publishing, but it's possible
(though slightly cumbersome) to do 2-column reports. I've read
comments on the Usenet that say WordUp is currently the best choice
of the GDOS word processors, and I wouldn't be surprised if it were
    true.  I got my copy for $54.95 from E.  Arthur Brown (mail order);
I've since discovered that BRE Software carries it for $52.95, and you
may conceivably be able to find an even better price. At that price,
    you can't go wrong.

README.TXT for WordUp: Version 1.30, Release 10/12/88
-----------------------------------------------------

This file includes any last minute changes or additions that
could not be incorporated in the printed manual. BE SURE TO READ THIS
ENTIRE FILE AS IT MAY CONTAIN INFORMATION CRUCIAL TO THE PROPER
OPERATION OF THE PROGRAM.

DRAFT/FINAL PRINT MODE
----------------------

Some of the new printer drivers provided in this package support
both a Draft and Final printing mode. The Draft has considerably
reduced quality, but takes less than half the time to print. To have
the ability to select between the two modes without exiting the program,
you must have the Install Printer Accessory (CONTROL.ACC) installed on
your boot disk as described in the installation procedures of the manual.

Unfortunately, users with 512K systems (unmodified 520ST) cannot
afford to give up the computer memory required by the Install Printer
Accessory. Therefore, there is a method for switching between modes
described in the discussion of the PRINT dialog in the Reference Section
of the manual. For this to work correctly, we have included a small
program called SETPRINT, which will set the printer installation the same
way the accessory would and then exit.

SETPRINT.PRG is automatically installed when you run the WordUp
Install Program. But if you have more than 512K memory in your system,
and are using the Install Printer Accessory anyway, you can delete
SETPRINT.PRG (although it is not necessary and provides no perceptible
advantage). The file will be located in the AUTO folder of your boot
disk. For those doing custom setups, it is stored in both the
SYSTEM1.ARC and SYSTEM2.ARC files on your original WordUp disks.

ATARI SMM804 PRINTER & DRAFT MODE
---------------------------------

If the Atari SMM804 Dot Matrix printer is used, do not select
DRAFT mode printing. The printer driver was designed to work with both
the Star Gemini 10X and Atari SMM804 dot matrix printers. However, the
printer command used for draft mode on the Gemini 10X performs a
different function on the SMM804, and no substitute command is available.
Because of this, DRAFT mode printing is not available on the SMM804
printer. If your printouts on the SMM804 look condensed, it is because
you have the DRAFT mode selected. Select FINAL print mode, as discussed
on page 8-19 of the WordUp manual.

ENDNOTES REPLACE FOOTNOTES
--------------------------

The footnote feature of the program has been exchanged for
endnote capability. There are two main reasons for the change. First,
due to the number of requests and in looking at the types of documents
that WordUp excels at and is most often applied, we felt that the
majority would be better served with an endnote feature. In fact,
endnotes can usually be substituted for footnotes, even in those cases
where they might not be the most desirable. Secondly, the prospectus
for achieving a reliable, speedy footnote function, that would operate in
a WYSIWYG manner within a reasonable time-frame did not look promising.
Lastly, we could not justify retaining the marginal footnote capability
in light of the program's current premium on computer memory, especially
on 512K systems.

In order to use the endnote capability, it should suffice to
mentally replace all mentions of FOOTNOTE with ENDNOTE while reading the
manual, except for the changes mentioned below.

1. On page 8-102, disregard the Note prohibiting footnotes and master
pages. Endnotes can be placed anywhere except within an endnote itself.

2. On page 8-80, in the discussion of Inserting a Footnote, the dialog
box will contain an additional choice for inserting an endnote that is
automatically numbered according to its order in the document. This
numbering will be maintained even if another endnote is deleted or is
inserted by pasting a block. This Auto-numbering option will be the
default, and you will have to click on the Symbol button if you wish to
use the character you have chosen instead.

3. On page 8-80, endnotes must be entered and edited at the end of the
document instead of at the bottom of the page. In addition, a quick
goto fuction has been added so you may rapidly jump back and forth
between the endnote reference in the text and the endnote text itself at
the end of the document. To jump to the endnote text, make sure your
cursor is to the immediate right or left of the endnote reference number
or symbol (such as is the case immediately after you choose Insert
Endnote...) and press the F2 function key. To jump back, make sure your
cursor is somewhere within the endnote text and press F2 again (or click
on the corresponding icon).

4. On page 9-8, the proceedure for adding a dividing line no longer
applies. You may add a dividing line by placing the cursor at the
beginning of the line above the first endnote and following step 4.

5. Pages 7-14 and 7-15 of the tutorial, should probably be skipped until
you have read INSERT FOOTNOTE on page 8-80, along with the above
changes.

6. WARNING: This version of the program will not work correctly with
files containing footnotes that were created with earlier versions.
Before discarding your earlier version of WordUp, you may want to go
through your existing files and delete any footnotes.

7. It is not possible to CUT, COPY, or PASTE blocks that contain endnote
references. It is not possible to use INSERT FILE with a WordUp file
containing endnotes.

IMPORTING COLOR GRAPHICS
------------------------

The INSERT GRAPHICS function has been improved. When importing
color DEGAS or NEOCHROME pictures, WordUp now converts the colors in the
picture into gray scale patterns derived from the picture's color
palette. This produces more accurate results than the method described
on page 8-88 of the WordUp manual.

When you import a color DEGAS or NEOCHROME picture, the color
palette is examined. If each color used can be mapped to a different
gray scale pattern, then it is done automatically. However, if there
are different colors that have the same brightness (for example, light
blue and light red), then an alert box will ask you how to handle it.
You have a choice of making each color the correct shade of gray (even
if different colors come out the same shade of gray), or you can make
each color a different shade of gray no matter what. In this case,
WordUp will set the first instance of any brightness to the correct gray
scale value, and when duplicate brightnesses are found, the closest
unused gray scale value will be substituted. You may wish to try both
methods to find the best results with a certain picture. As a general
rule, most low-resolution color pictures will cause the alert box to
appear, while most medium-resolution pictures will not.

DEGAS ELITE PICTURES
--------------------

WordUp will now load pictures stored in the DEGAS ELITE
compressed picture format. Simply choose the DEGAS button in the INSERT
GRAPHICS dialog, and then choose the desired picture file when the file
selector comes up. This will load DEGAS pictures of compressed or
non-compressed format, color or monochrome.

If you use this new version of WordUp with a preferences file
saved by an earlier version, you should delete the preferences file
(WORDUP.INF). Otherwise, the filenames for compressed DEGAS pictures
will not appear in the file selector box.
367.4no footnotes any more? WHAT RUBBISH!DELNI::GOLDSTEINRoom 101, Ministry of LoveThu Jan 12 1989 20:0017
Just as I was getting interested, it left me seething with

    <FLAME ON!>

Since when can endnotes be substituted for footnotes? Word Perfect,
for all its faults (on the ST), at least understands how to do
footnotes. They don't have to be WYSIWYG; the program just has
to know how many lines of text to reserve at the bottom of each
page for them, and you have a separate footnote editing screen.

Just try preparing a legal paper with end notes instead of footnotes...
NeoCept is in contempt of their users!

Count me out. I'm still looking for a GOOD WP for the ST. One
more reason I may have to buy a (boo, hiss) Clone.
