348.0. "Warning Lending Software" by OPG::CHRIS (Capacity! What Capacity ?) Wed Dec 21 1988 12:10

    Beware ****

Be very careful about lending out software:

    My experience:

I first bought my ATARI 520 STFM a year last November. I registered
in the ATARI notes file and requested a copy of KERMIT. A few people
replied and said just send a disk along. John Maude for EDU services
which is very close to my location, replied:

Send me a Disc and some of your software and I will
copy KERMIT for you and send it back.

That was 13 months ago and by doing this I never had a copy of Star
Wars back which I lent out, also the disc I sent for a copy of Kermit...

Can someone tell me how I stand, as I have sent mail, phoned and even
    sent threats to no avail.....

Can I take legal action or is the 19.99 amount too small....

Has anyone else had this sort of trouble ? If so how did you resolve
    it.

    Regards,

    Chris

Well, I never experienced this, but...

[1] Do *NEVER* give away that only copy you have. (I don't think
you did, because everybody has at least one backup of all the
        programs and data ;-)

[2] Just ask your partner to make his own copy of your disk and
then to send/give you back your disk with his software.
That way you only lose ONE disk (just the hardware!)

[3] usualy you do not have to worry about getting an answer because
nobody goes to steel a floppy (worth $1.95) with only PDsoftware
(worth $0.0).(You do not give away nonPD/nonShareWare stuff,
        do you? ;-)

[4] If once paragraph [3] is not true... well, see [2] and forget
it (and him/her too), it's not worth the pain.

    ---markus---

ps By the way I have some exiting sw, just send me a disk ...
