231.0. "Help on The Pawn" by SACKET::PARKE (Some stars are really out of sight) Mon Sep 19 1988 00:52

For The Pawn (I know, an old game which I bought over a year ago
and just found in the bottom of my file cab) there are "Hints"
    available which are encoded.

The beginning of the hint section says that one should entere
thenumbers and letters between the '<' and '>'. It also says to
practice with a first hint (which is on Pg 46 of the book).

I have typed this sequence forwards, backwards and reversed pairs
of characters and continue to get the merry response of "Sorry,
    try that one again".

Have I missed someting, or is this thing broke?

Can anyone offer a hint ??

       		Thanks,
    			Bill

Not too sure about this as it is a long time since I played 'The
Pawn' but you are typing :-

    			Hint <encoded message>

rather than the message on its own?

231.2There's a bug in the hint parser!SMURF::COUTUHe who will not risk, cannot win.Mon Sep 19 1988 16:438
In my copy is a small slip of paper with a note on it that
states that there is a 'small' bug in the hint parser.
In order to work around it you need to append the letters
'CO' to the end of every hint string. Without appending
co to the string you will see exactly the error message
    you described.

    apropos THE PAWN....

Does anybody know how to climb over the big boulder????
I have heard, that it should be possible to mix some black pouder
to build a sort of a bomb (?).

I want to solve this game!

    Any clues,

             Tobias
231.4a hint, not too explicit.4GL::GLEASONI'd rather be playing ELITE!Fri Jan 06 1989 15:377
    Spoiler:
You can't climb over it, and you don't make a bomb. With the proper
implements, you can construct something strong enough to move the
    boulder.

Hi there Pawn players,
Do any of you know how to vote in the tree ? ( VOTE FOR GRINGO )
How do you kill the dragon up north ?
  What about the devil ?

		Thanks,
		Arthur

Well, there's more than one way to finish the game.

You can finish without ever voting, I therefore have no
idea how to vote or even if you can vote.

Killing the dragon is most annoying, it is syntax
specific and requires you to pay attention to every
nook and cranny of the dragon's lair, especially
    the shadows.

You can't touch the devil, as I recall, but he can
do something useful for you and is helpful in
    defeating the evil wizard.

231.7I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!!DDIF::BRAMHALLWescott Bramhall (age 12)Thu Dec 21 1989 23:0710
Hi. I just got the Pawn and played for a little bit. I got stuck on
how to move the boards in the Gnome's tree. I can't figure out how to
get into the guru's cupboard. Why does he keep laughing? How can I
    make him stop?

Sorry for asking questions already conquered but I'd like to know.

    Cheers and Happy Holidays,
    Wescott Bramhall(Wes)

There is a hint for the boards problem in the hint section of
the book. There is also at least one hint for how to deal
with the guru. Take the time to type them in and see what
    you get!
