    Maybe someone can give a better description of usenet but, simply
    stated it's a world wide computer network. It's used for exchanging
    information and a LOT of public domain software. Usenet is broken
    up into a bunch of "newsgroups". Newsgroups are essentialy topics.

    The attached memo describes how to subscribe to a sort of VMS delivery
    service for usenet. The service is gratiously provided by Ed
    Featherston. My understanding is that direct access to usenet
    is limited to Unix/Ultrix machines because of the particular software
    that is used (this software may becoming available for VMS).

    The three news groups that are of particular interest atari ST owners are:
    	comp.sources.atari.st Sources for the ATARI ST system
    	comp.binaries.atari.st Binaries for the ATARI ST system
    	comp.sys.atari.st       16 bit Atari computers.

	The new subscription software is in place and functional.
	To use this software you must do the following:

	- Send a message to ROLL::USENET (or ASHBY::USENET) containing
	  the commands you wish executed.

	- Make sure that the word 'subscription' is in the 'Subject:' field
	  of the mail message.

	All questions and/or problems should be addressed to
			ROLL::USENET_DISTRIBUTOR

1. To subscribe to a newsgroup (one line for each desired newsgroup)
	$USELIST ADD your-enet-address desired-newsgroup-name

2. To unsubscribe from a newsgroup (one line for each desired newsgroup)
	$USELIST REMOVE your-enet-address desired-newsgroup

3. To change your address on all distribution lists
   (CAUTION: THIS ONLY WORKS IF YOUR NEW ADDRESS DOES CURRENT EXIST
	IN THE DATABASE)

	$USELIST CHANGE your-old-enet-address your-new-enet-address

4. To remove yourself from ALL distributions (one line does it all)
	$USELIST KILL your-enet-address

5. To get a list of the newsgroups you currently subscribe to
	$USELIST SHOW your-enet-address

6. To get a list of currently active newsgroups

    My USENET mailings have become very sporadic within the last couple
    of weeks. Anyone else having the same problem? If so, what's the
    reason?

    The usenet conference (hit SELECT or KP7 or "add entry ASHBY::USENET")
    has been "discussing" this for a few weeks. Below is a few of the
    relevent notes. There is also a GATEWAYS conference but I don't
    know the node name.

    The problem still exists. We are having a problem with VAX/Rdb on
    ROLL-ASHBY (we keep getting Reserved OPCODE error messages). We
    have de-installed, re-installed, etc.. several times, and Rdb still
    won't work. (The USENET subscription database is a VAX/Rdb database).
    The problem is being worked, and hopefully will be resolved soon.
    I will put in an announce here when we do resolve it.

    Turns out another software package that was installed was creating
    the problem (FOCUS). It has its own copy of RDBSHR, and changes
    the system logicals to point to that (It took 3 of us this long
    to notice something that simple!. Sometimes you can't see the forest
    for the trees.)

    My apologies for it taking this long. The system is back up, and
    I will ask the gateway to please start sending us stuff again.

The USENET feeder (ROLL::/ASHBY::) was suffering performance problems as a
result of the multitude of USENET traffic, so they shut it down. In the
conference ROLL::USENET they are discussing alternatives, but until then no
more USENET for a while.

    Using a VMS program which acceses a server on an ULTRIX system,
    I am able to gain access to the USENET NEWS groups.

    I have setup a worldreadable directory to store items from the USENET
    for the ST and 8bit. I have no automatic procedures as yet. The
    file names will be consistent. There are now two files in there
    that you can read and/or copy. You may also do a directory of the
    VINO::PORT:[BHAMILTON.NEWS] area. The files are:
    	VINO::PORT:[BHAMILTON.NEWS]8BITNEWS.890503
    	VINO::PORT:[BHAMILTON.NEWS]STNEWS.890503

    These conatain all the available messages to date. Unfortunately
    they do not go back to when we lost the USENET mailing distribution.
    The ST file goes back to 20-apr and the 8bit file to 24-apr.

    I'll try to get updates daily until something better comes along.

   Buzz,

      everyone is eligible to use the servers, they initially had
   just a DECwindows reader available, but now there is a terminal
   based reader available.

    OK...

    If you want to post to the newsgroups or read several, then I suggest
    that you read the UPSAR::NEWS-BACKBONE notes file and start up your
    own news reader.

    If you just want regular copies of the contents of the
    comp.sys.atari.st newsgroup, feel free to access the directory
    mentioned in .9.

    Apparently some people are picking up these files. As with other things
    they have moved but I'll keep them in the same area:
