75.0. "Text to phoneme. Phoneme to speech?" by MILRAT::WALLACE () Tue May 03 1988 21:52

    The old notes file contained a short discussion around speech
    generation, mostly inquiries for PD programs/sources that do text
    to speech translation.

    If anyone is interested, I just came across an old usenet posting
    of sources for a text to PHONEME program. The files can be copied
    from MILRAT::DISK$USER3:[WALLACE.PUBLIC.ST.PHONEME]*.*

    Does anyone have any ideas on (or pointers to articles on) how to
    convert phonemes to speech?

75.1when the chips are down ...DEMING::HLQARThu Dec 22 1988 10:1411

    Radio Shock sells two chips to be used concurrently to convert text
    to ASCII, and then from ASCII to speech. One of the numbers is
    SPO256, the other I can't remember off the top of my head. The
    ASCII to speech chip uses some external circuitry and a dedicated
    internal microprocessor to compare consecutive letters against an
    onboard rom which contains phoneme rules. You have the option of
    having separate rom for exceptions, additional ram for increased
    I/O buffer space, and (externally) programmable handshaking.

75.2Radio Shack's a ripoff !MOVIES::FORSTERThu Dec 22 1988 10:296
If you live in the UK, don't buy the SP0256 from Radio Shack. Buy it
from the Maplins catalogue for about one third the price. The catalogue
also features a circuit diagram showing how to hook the thing up
to computer and amplifier/loudspeaker. Works fine !

    That's probably true for distributors in the US, as well. The other
    chip number just came to me ... ATS256 (I think). That was the
    ASCII conversion chip. It's been a while since I've played with
    them, but I think I was wrong last time. The ATS converts ASCII
    to a code that the SPO can use; then the SPO generates the phoneme
    from its rom.
