69.0. "Chip help." by KERNEL::FLOWERS (Hero of the Green Screen...) Thu Apr 28 1988 10:04

    Hello all,

First of all I would to say a big thanks to Jeff Lomicka
for his article on file transfer. It really was a big help and I
am now the proud? owner of much PD software.

I would appreciate some help on upgrading my 520 to 1MB is it
just a case of purchasing the chips (and those little yellow things)
and soldering them in myself? I opened up my Atari the other day
and have taken the serial numbers of the memory chips that are in
there. Another question is, on the lower left hand side of the system
board there are some chip holders ( 5 of them ????) and at present
only two of them are used....what do these two chips do?? and more
interestingly what **else** can I plug in there.

    Thanks for any info,

    	Jason.

69.1Ram upgrade / pc emulatorJGO::SMEELEThu Apr 28 1988 13:3942
Hi there nr 69

with regards to your question about the memory upgrade.
I have done the "piggy-back" upgrade one and a half years ago.
If after this memo you are still considering this option I'll try
to find the article with the details translate it and post it here.

However, the alternatives are:
1:Buy a board to allow for "solderless upgrade" and later possibility
to upgrade to 2.5 mb see note 440.* in OLD_ATARIST (may14::)

2:Sell 520 and buy 1040 (built in double density floppy!)

3:Consider buying supercharger this is a board that plugs into the
dma port of your 520 ,contains an 8 Mhz 8086 to do your pc emulation
also has 1MB of ram which according to some magazine I read ,
is also available for use as ramdisk or whatever in Atari mode.
Aparantly the DMA port can still be used for whatever it was
intended for due to the fact that it comes out on the other side
    	  of the board.
Also floppy and hard disk connected to the Atari can be used with
 	  the emulator.
The address I have for this board is :

		ABD electronic GmbH
		Zettachring 12
		7000 Stuttgart 80
		Deutschland

		tel:0711 7150037

The cost of this board is DM 698.--

    	Regarding the questio about the empty sockets;
they are for TOS in Rom .
The upgrade here is 5 new roms and throw out the old ones.
I think this is also included in the newer 1040.

Time and money flies when you are having fun.
	Success.

How new is the 520? I did this to a new 520STfm earlier this year.
My questions and the answers are somewhere in the old notes file,
    around 640 I think.

All I did was open up the holes for a second row of ram chips and
their capacitors. Fit capacitors and sockets and then drop in ram
chips. What I did not do was to add the recommended ballast resistors
on the address lines ( I had not seen the recommendation when I
did the work). It took me an evening and worked first time.

The only reason to go to an expansion board is when I need more
than 1 meg. There is a whole bunch of stuff on my shopping list
    that has a higher priority.

    Jason,
To do this memory upgrade is a POP (piece of pi--) I have done
six machines now, with no failures. You will need sixteen sixteen
pin DIL IC sockets and sixteen small 220 nano farad capacitors,
and of course 16 250k 150 nano second DRAMS.
You will have to suck out all the solder in the wholes of the spare
chips, this is the bit that takes the time. If you look for an advert
in ST World there are many people selling kits for about 50 pounds.

The five chip sockets, of which only two are used, are the GEM OS,
on the older machines these were all used, smaller ROM's I presume,
I dion't know if you can plug in extra ROM's, perhaps someone else
    knows.

Give me a ring if you want to know more.

    Peter.
