32.0. "Carrier Command" by CHEST::BADMAN (Better Late Than Forever) Mon Apr 11 1988 15:39

    Hello Again!

    Just bought a new game - Carrier Command from Rainbird. It's brilliant.
    Solid, fast, three dimensional graphics, a MASSIVE play area, an
    intelligent computer opponent and 45 seconds of digitised music!
    All on one disk - Clever, as well - the disk has two sides of data,
    but is also usable in a single sided drive! The single sided drive
    user doesn't get any digitised music!

    Anyway, back to the game. The playing area consists of a large map
    covering a group of 64 islands. You control an aircraft carrier,
    which can carry up to 4 planes and 4 amphibious vehicles. You can
    program courses for any of these 9 vehicles, you can view from the
    cockpit of any of these 9, and you can also assume manual control
    for any of them. The carrier can also carry fuel and an extensive
    armoury. You can custom-design your planes and amphib vehicles.

    The objective is to assume control of all islands or waste your
    opponents battle ship. You gain control of an island by firstly
    ridding it of any of the opponents forces, who put up a formidable
    fight, then dropping a command centre pod on the island from an
    amphib vehicle. The pod constructs buildings etc on the island.
    The tendency of the islands constructions can be defensive, resource
    or factory. Resource and factory islands are used to replenish any
    of your weaponry, build planes, make fuel etc. The heart of the
    island is the resource centre. This is what has to be destroyed
    or overrun in order to take over an island.

    There is so much more to this game, and it's so massive - it takes
    a plane, at top speed, 2 hours to cross the map from one side to
    the other! I give it a 10.

    				  Jamie.

    CARRIER COMMAND is a very good graphics game. BUT... playing against
    the computer in either of the two modes quickly becomes very dull.
    Islands may be taken by simply blasting the central defense tower
    with the ship's lasar cannon and then wiping up the remaining aircraft
    before sending in an assault craft.
    If you start with one island you will soon run out of carrier fuel
    and spend mant real time hours waiting for some fuel to be produced.
    The enemy carrier will be destroyed by a few air-craft launched
    missiles.
    As a strategy game it ranks below Ludo.
    When will some person convert EMPIRE for the ATARI? There is a version
    for the IBM (spit!) PC.

    I agree whole heartedly with the comments about the simulation and
    graphics qualities of Carrier Command. I am just annoyed as I bought
    it as a strategy game which it is not.

    EMPIRE for ever!!!!!

    P.W.
32.2Empire is out for the STAKOV11::KINGExtremists should be shot!Sat Aug 20 1988 08:445
    There is a version of Empire out for the ST!

    A friend of mine owns it, and I hope to find it around here soon.

    I will ask him where he got it and post it here.
32.3CARRIER COMMANDSUBURB::REYNOLDSBThu Apr 12 1990 15:5326

    I have got the game Carrier command and I think it is the most
    impressive game yet, I have played for 38 hours and I am now in
    the lead but I still have something like 30 Islands to conquer.

    Superb, if you have not got it then let me know and I will lend
    you it !

    But I have a question :

    Why is it that my ship "CARRIER ELSON" takes ages to travel from
    one Island to another, and the enemies ship can travel from one
    Island to another in half the time AND:
    he can travel through Islands as well...

     ANY ANSWERS?

    I cannot wait to meat the enemie ship in combat, and when I do I
    will let you know !!

    Thanks alot

32.4cheat requestBOOZER::LOXTONWed May 30 1990 14:0210
    	I agree that the computer cheats,the enemy carrier travels much
    to fast.

    	I believe there is a cheat to speed up your carrier,this would
    make the game much more playable.

    	Does anybody know what the cheat is

32.5How does Carrier Command end?STRIKR::RAYERWho ya gonna call ...Wed May 30 1990 16:0113
    I've just finished playing a mega session of Carrier Command; have
    captured NEMESIS, and am now unsure how to end the game. It seems that
    the enemy carrier may be skulking somewhere too wounded to brave a
    final confrontation (I sent a manta kamikazi at it)? What signifies
    game end: the carrier's destruction or recapture of all the enemy
    islands (still about 10)?

    Regards, Carl

    PS: The carrier seems to escape from islands rather quickly, but am not
    sure whether the 'seems' means that it does. It also has a habit of
    sending aircraft against other islands; so the messages make it appear
    that its fairly zipping around the archipelago.
32.6Cheat !BAHTAT::WORRALLWed May 30 1990 20:268

    I can confirm a cheat does exist, you type a keyword in I'm sure it
    speeds the carrier up.....but I can't find it !! but I will ask around

    Regards Trevor

    Ps Give me a call sometime on the Rotherham number
32.7cheat foundBOOZER::LOXTONMon Jun 04 1990 09:1010
	Start game as normal,click on pause.

    Type "grow old along with me",cheat mode active apears on the screen.

    	Now,Pressing kp7 accelerates time.It doesn't change the speed
    of your carrier relative to the enemy's.But gets rid of the long
    wait whilst travelling between islands.

32.8MANTA/WALRUS REPLACEMENTSEDSWS::MANSFIELDFri Aug 10 1990 11:0611
    CAN ANYBODY HELP.
    I GOT CARRIER COMMAND AS PART OF THE ST DISCOVERY PACK AND I'M NOT SURE
    WHETHER THE INSTRUCTIONS THAT CAME WITH IT ARE IN FULL OR NOT. MY
    PROBLEM IS, I DONT SEEM TO BE ABLE TO REPLACE VEHICLES OR AIRCRAFT FROM
    THE STOCKPILE IF THEY ARE DESTROYED. WHENEVER I TRY TO TRANSFER ONE
    WHILE IN THE TRANSFER SUPPLY SCREEN, THE PROMPT "ACC STOCK EXCEEDED"
    APPEARS. ALL OTHER SUPPLIES ARE REPLACED EASILY SO IS THERE SOMETHING
    THAT I'M MISSING OUT.
    OTHERWISE, THIS IS NOT A BAD GAME BUT ITS A BIT DATED NOW. I PROBABLY
    WOULDN'T HAVE BOUGHT IT ON ITS OWN BUT IT HAS WHETTED MY INTEREST FOR
    THE FOLLOW UP 'BATTLE COMMAND' WHICH LOOKS PRETTY GOOD IN THE REVIEWS.
32.9I had the same problem...PIKES::BITTROLFFMon Aug 13 1990 13:5010
I had the same problem when I first started playing Carrier Command. Eventually,
I figured it out but it's been so long since I've played I can't remember how.
The info was in the manual, however, it just had to be read very carefully.

If you recheck the manual and can't find it, and if noone else can help, post
another note and I'll check it out.

Steve

P.S. What steps are you taking now when attempting to restock?
32.10Some thoughts on Carrier CommandSTRIKR::RAYERMon Aug 13 1990 16:5515
    I seem to recall that islands produce different objects at a different
    rate. You state a maximum number of, say, MANTA craft you want
    constructed but this does not guarantee that they will all be ready for
    transport next time you arrive at a STOCK pile island.

    I only played Carrier Command once ... a mammoth session, which
    resulted in my capture of 95% of the islands. Then I sent a MANTA on a
    suicide mission after the Carrier, dive bombed it, and it slunk away
    and never reappeared. I presume it was too damaged to return, and had
    no means of repairing itself. And there's so much sea to search in.

    Regards,

    Carl

32.11A little modificationHAMSUP::HEBBELWed Oct 10 1990 12:3013
    Hello !

    I wanna say somthing about the speed of the other Carrier.
    If you look into the manual of the game you will find a hint in
    the novel.
    The ACC Epsilon was a little bit modified(HA HA HA !!!) so it is only
    a bit faster. If you chase him with a MANTA fighter, he Will escape.
