8.3$400 System for sale!MDCRAB::MCLENDONThu Nov 02 1989 19:3912
    A friend of mine 'graduated' to a Mac SE and is getting ready to move.
    He has a 520St with 1MB, 1SS and 1DS drive, monochrome monitor, and
    would like to sell this system for $400. Very little software, but I'd
    be happy to help out a first-timer buyer with some PD stuff. If you're
    interested, please call him in the evening (he is not a DEC employee)
    at (202) 829-1379 (Washington, DC).

    Thanks,
    Bruce

8.4Hard Disk Controller for saleREAD::POMEROYMon Jul 09 1990 13:5639
    	I recently sold my Atari 1040ST, and I am now left with a few items
    which I would like to sell for whatever I can get.

    	The item that I most want to sell is a Berkley Microsystems Hard
    Disk Controller and Host Adapter. I used it for over a year with a
    Seagate 277N 63 Mb Hard Drive. I had four partitions (3x16Mb+1x15Mb).
    The board plugs into the DMA port and features a DMA pass-thru
    connector. It allows you to plug in an ST-506 drive (at least the
    documentation said it could.), or a SCSI controller and SCSI drive.
    	The board cost me $250 with DMA cable and software. The software is
    GEM, menu driven and works well. It allows any partition to be set up
    as auto-booting. If you don't have a HD on your system, you don't know
    what you're missing. Once you use one, you'll never want to go back. I
    am asking for the paltry sum of $100. The board is in perfect
    condition, and I could probably get more, but I need the money!!!

    	I would also be willing to sell an XT power supply for the drive
    for $40, and maybe you could talk me into selling my HD (63Mb) for
    $300. It's a quality drive, and the software is already set up for it.

    	Also for sale: (all original disks/packaging)

    		Flight Simulator II
    		Bard's Tale I
    		ArcticFox
    		Degas Elite
    		Flash (not sure what version - 1.6 sound right???)

    	If any sound appealing tell me, ten bucks and it's yours. Actually,
    that price is negotiable. Since I can't use it anymore. Tell me what
    you want to pay, and I'll sell it to ya.

8.5STart disks too.READ::POMEROYMon Jul 09 1990 14:018
    Hi again-

    	I also have a bunch of STart disks, packed with PD software. If
    anyone is interested in buying them, get in touch. I would like a few
    dollars per disk.

    				Bob.

    re .5
    Note that Start disks are NOT PD. Antic and Start make it very clear
    that all material on their disks are copyrighted.
8.7deeperUPWARD::SANDERSBResist much, Obey littleTue Jul 10 1990 02:119
        While that is true, some of the programs on the disks are or have
        been in PD.

        Just to digress further, are the Analog disks now PD? Does
        anybody know what the status and/or law is for a company that has
        gone under?

        Bob
8.8Analog and ST-Log is PDBAGELS::FELDMANJerry Feldman DTN 227-3279Tue Jul 10 1990 13:3911
    Start and Antic disks have always been entirely copyrighted. Analog and
    ST-Log disks have always been publoc domain after the month of
    publication. Therefore, most Analog and ST-Log software can be freely
    distributed except some titles that were expressly copyrighted by the
    author.

    Also, today, very few programs are actually released to public domain.
    Most authors retain the copyright and give permission for the free
    non-commercial use of said program. Public domain, on the other hand is
    totally free and unencumbered. You can use it, sell it, and the author
    has no recourse.
8.9I know they're copyrighted.READ::POMEROYTue Jul 10 1990 15:3315
    I am not "pirating" the files off the STart disks. I bought the disks
    from Antic and then STart through subscriptions dating back to 1985. I
    have the original disks, and I want to sell them. It's no different
    than people who sell (including myself) who sell commercial software
    that they no longer want.

    If you are trying to protect STart's interests, try calling any PD BBS.
    Just about every one I ever called had the files from STart the day the
    magazine arrived (not uploaded by me).

    So, if anyone wants them, they are still for sale.

If you look back at your reply .5 you'll see that you said the Start disks
were 'packed with PD'.

Jerry is not complaining that you are trying to sell the disks - only that you
thought that the contents were PD because they are magazine disks.
8.11standard disclaimers applyNORGE::CHADWed Jul 11 1990 13:3710
The contents of the disk may be PD or not. Just because START copyrights the
disks doesn't necessarily mean the contents are copyrighted too. If an author
says it is PD or freely distributable and START puts it on a disk that they
copyright, that just means that their compilation is copyright, not each
individual program. There is a difference. Of course, I am not a lawyer
so don't believe what I say if it is important to you. Also, I am not familiar
with said disks so this may not apply anyway (I'm only addressing the
possibility).

8.13STart mags at the dumpREAD::POMEROYWed Jul 11 1990 16:2416
    Hi,
      My name is Bob Pomeroy and I am gonna kick myself in the head. Jim, I
    threw away every magazine I ever got from STart (and Antic). I had
    magazines dating back to December of 1985 (the first Anitic I ever
    got). I bet I had all but maybe a ten of the magazines from
    1986-present. Then, two weeks ago, (I am a coop student with piles of
    junk at my mother's house) my mother made me clean out my junk. I
    bundled up all my old mags and she brought them to the local landfill.

8.14520ST system for sale. Best Offer.REFINE::POMEROYMon Sep 17 1990 17:3233
    You haven't heard from me in awhile, but you aren't rid of me yet.

    I still have the ST software for sale (for whatever you want to give me
    at this point.)

    		Degas ELite
    		Flight Simulator II
    		Bratacas (from Psygnosis, 1st ST game made)
    		Bard's Tale I
    		Flash (from Antic Software) V1.6 (terminal program)
    		Arctic Fox from Electronic Arts
    		WordPerfect

    And I am now selling a complete 520ST system that is in near mint
    condition. It was once owned by a girlfriend who moved to California
    and left it behind.

    		Stock Atari 520ST 512K, single-sided floppy	$200
    		SM124? Monochrome monitor			$150
    		Supra 30Meg Hard Drive				$350
    		Star Mictronics NX2400 MultiFont printer	$250
    		Atari SF314 double-sided 3.5" floppy drive	$60

    Or, if some kind soul out there wants to be nice and take everything, a
    discount would be in order. Perhaps $900 or so. And please anyone out
    there who is even a little interested in any of this and thinks my
    prices are outrageous, email me with an offer. Any offer will be
    considered. In fact, lets say that the best remotely reasonable offer
    at the end of September gets it.

8.19cartridge portDECWIN::GILLIAMWed Jan 23 1991 15:4618
    It's made by Atari. It plugs into the cartridge port on your ST. In
    addition to emulating a VT100, you can do ASCII uploads and downloads
    with it. I suppose you could uuencode binaries to get around this
    restriction.

    For example, a download would use the following sequence:

    1. Enable the capture buffer using SETUP-B. (I think you can save
    options in a OPT file.)

    2. Press ALT-R and enter the destination pathname at the prompt.

    3. Enter DCL command - TYPE filename

    4. Press ALT-R to close the file.

    By the way, does anyone know the maximum size of the buffer. The VT102
    manual describes a 128-character input buffer. That seems too small.
