1110.0. "acting class advice needed" by SMURF::RUNDBAKEN () Tue Mar 04 1997 13:55

I could use some advice on drama classes.

I've been performing in community theatre most of my life. I
haven't taken a drama class in years and would love to do
so now. I saw an add in NEED (New England Entertainment
Digest) for spring acting classes at New Repertory Theatre
in Newton Highlands, MA. Has anyone heard of this group?

I really was interested in taking an acting class, but this
group is offering a class on audition technique. Never taken
a class in this area. It's rather expensive, so I'm wondering
if a good book on this topic would be sufficient. There are
some classes you need to experience, others you can learn by
'reading the book'. Has anyone taken a class on audition technique?
    What did you think?

Any other suggestions on places to call in the Mass./NH area
    that offer drama classes?

    Thanks!

    Susan

First of all, for audition techniques, pick up Michael Shurtleff's
"Audition"; it is THE best training there is.

I would not waste your money on an audition techniques class if what
you are looking for is an acting class. They are entirely different.
You want a class that will teach methods of developing a character,
finding the beats in a scene, etc., which is not what you will get from
    a class in audition techniques.

New Rep is pretty good from what I have heard.

I will bring in my The Source tomorrow night, and enter a few other
    names.
