1222.0. "question about xeroxed signature on US and MA tax returns" by JAMIN::OSMAN (Eric Osman, dtn 226-7122) Tue Apr 15 1997 18:32

If I sign my federal and MA state income returns and then make
xerox copies of them, can I send in the xerox copies ? Or will they
complain because they'll detect that the signature is a xerox.

(you may well ask why I don't just send in the "original". Well, the
original was printed out one-sided, and I ran the whole thing through
    the xerox on the

    	1 -> 2

setting to get double-sided, and did it after I signed the returns)

Oh yeah, I should explain how the original became one-sided in the
first place. It's because I used macintax on my father's computer
whose laser printer only prints single-sided.

Why not just send in the single-sided copy? (Too much postage? :-) )

You must send in the original. Single-sided is fine.

Why was I (and others) emailed a copy of this note, Eric?

There are instructions on the Mass forms that indicate that only
original FORMS can be used. Mass forms are apparently OCR'd (if not for
written content, then certainly for form ID and your little filled-in
ovals).

I also received mail from Eric - I suppose the old saying "A lack of planning
on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part" has relevance here.

Jeez, it's not that hard to put a bit of white paper over the sig and re-copy it
so you can re-sign it.

I assume you mean xerographic copies. The answer is: No.

For federal, print a copy in 1040PC format, sign it and
submit it. One side of one page covers the 1040 and most of
the common Schedules (at least A, B and D).

Or print another copy of just the 1040 form, copy it
single->double sided, sign that and submit it.

Or print the 1040 form even-pages-only, put the printed
pages into the paper tray and print again odd-pages-only.
	Sign it and submit it.

thanks, all, for your help. I finally just signed in pen next
to the xeroxed signature. I hope they accept it. /Eric
