1214.0. "San Francisco Bay question" by ENQUE::PARODI (John H. Parodi DTN 381-1640) Wed Mar 19 1997 12:00

    As you approach San Francisco airport from the east, you pass over San
    Francisco bay. Parts of this watery expanse are divided into sections
    and many of these sections are brightly colored and of different
    hues.

    What's going on here? Plankton farming?

Does Morton still do salt extraction in the bay?

I think there is a San Francisco-specific notes file somewhere, possibly
on node THEBAY - check TURRIS::EASYNET_CONFERENCES (or do a directory of
conferences on THEBAY).

Just fyi...

  Those are definitely salt evaporation ponds. They're mentioned
  explicitly (with a photo of the ponds) in this month's "Scien-
  tific American", in the article about single-celled organisms
  that live in extremes of heat, cold, alkilinity, acidity, and
  salinity.

    Thanks, Atlant. I knew that letting my Scientific American copies pile
    up unread wound eventually get me into trouble...
