SUBJECT: Trip Report for the 22nd SAS Users Group International Conference
          (SUGI22) in San Diego, CA.

Date of Trip:	Mar. 17-19th, 1997.	Location: San Diego, CA.
	------------- ---------

	Conference Highlights:
	======================

	- The paper on Run-to-Run batch processes although was in the Stats.
and modeling sessions by a university was in conjunction with
Sematech and directly applicable to the Semiconductor Industry.
Their application GUI interface gave me some ideas for the one
I'm working on in Tungsten Etch trace data. See me if you would
like a copy of their paper. Their application was on CMP in-line
	  data.

	- Our (Jose Ramiriz and myself) paper was presented as a poster
session and several folks who stopped by were rather impressed.
Digital Corp. marketing was also impressed and may send us to
the European Conf. in Madrid, Spain for a demo. We'll see on this
          one!

	- I was very imprssed with SAS's package for Data Mining (ie. Neural
Nets app. and Decision Tree) package. We might be able to use
          this in the future.

	Issues Covered in Demo Area:
	============================

	- Visited Mr. Sharad Prabhu at the Stats. booth who is a developer
for the new SAS ADX menu system. The new one will replace the
old version which we have. We are beta testing this now and will
get a new CD-ROM with beta release 2 in April, next month. This
second release will enable response serface DoE designs and analysis
so Process Eng. can use as in-line experiment analyses, etc.
The features are very impressive. Our Digital non-disclosure
contract is being signed at SAS Inst. in Cary and will enable us
to use new release in April. If you are interested in some question
that I and Jose Ramirez raised and were answered please see me
or Jose and we can fill you in on the details.

	- Spoke with SAS/AF developers on why the SAS/Graph output object
does not have an inheritted _print_ method. He agreed and will
get back to me on this.

	- Spoke with the Data Mining Solutions booth about how we might use
this to perform ad hoc data inquisitions into manufacturing data
          in the absense of experiments.

	- Saw an Alpha Laptop by Tadpole Computers running on OpenVMS; very
          cool! and fast too.

	- Visited the SAS/Desktop booth (this is the PC application which
allows you to drag-and-drop a SAS dataset, flatfile, etc. on a
Graph, report, or analysis icon and it does it for you. The
Statistical Analysis icon currently is empty so I asked for
a reason; they are obtaining inputs from customers (like us) on
what they would like to see. I gave my inputs as to the requirements
like boxplots, analyses already in Stats module like GLM, Mixed,
          and others.

	- Purchased some SAS books on mixed-models analysis and others
a few which we don't have.
