Don't believe I have ever heard of a cat breed called Maltese.
I breed and show Birmans, and spend most weekends at cat shows.
CFA recognizes 33 breeds, and Maltese isn't one of them. Could
it be that you have gotten the name mixed up? Why not describe
what they look like and maybe we can help you figure out which breed
    it is.

According to `The Book of the Cat', Maltese is one of the old names
for the breed now known as Russian Blue. I'm sure you'll find keyword
entries for Russian Blue; we even have at least one RB breeder in
    the file.

My friend has 2 Maltese dogs. They are very cute, and are smaller
then cats. I have never heard of a Maltese cat?

I also have "The book of the Cat" which does state that the Russian
Blue is also known as Maltese.

    Good book on cats!

3095.9Here I am...with (Maltese) Russian Blues!GLINKA::GREENECatmax = Catmax + 1Fri Dec 01 1989 12:5717
Yup, the Russian Blue used to be referred to as the Maltese.

During the past 10 years, the Russian Blues have been bred to
be more silvery and of a slighter build, tho still muscular.

I am trying to breed my cats to be "intermediate" in size and
shape, and definitely on the silvery side.

By the way, the "silvery sheen" comes about from the fact that
each blue-grey hair has a silver point, known as silver tipping.

They are quiet, affectionate, and intelligent cats.

I have 1 or 2 kittens still available before the Holidays, and
1 kitten still available for a January pickup.
