4224.0. "I Caught the Stray" by CHIPS::URBAN () Wed Dec 05 1990 11:57

Guess what? I finally caught that little stray female that I asked for
help with... I borrowed a trap, and she finally went for it. The only
thing was that I had this wonderful plan for her that just didn't
happen. After I caught her, I took her right to my vet for a leukemia
test. Then she was to go to a shelter in Concord, where I was told
that they would spay and vaccinate her and care for her for awhile.
Then, I had a nice woman that was going to let her live in her barn.
Well, anyway, the woman in Concord overextended herself and couldn't
help me out after all. So, what I did was be a total frantic lady
yesterday trying to work something out for this little baby. I finally
got a friend of mine to care for her, possibly keep her, for a few
weeks... Right now, she's at the vet getting spayed and shots and all
that....she's totally crazy, though and gave both (took her to 2
different places so far) vets a really terrible time, and I hope that
she doesn't go crazy on my friend when I take her to his home. She's a
love with me, but she never let me pet her...she did the rolling around
purry thing for me, so she has potential...she's just scared. Anyone
have any ideas on what I should do with her after I get her to his
house? Someone thought she should stay in his bedroom (he doesn't
mind) with her food/litter/hiding box in it. Think this is safe or
should she be alone in a bigger room downstairs?

Anyway, a few of you nice people offered to help me with money....well,
I really could use it. This is what it cost so far:

$45 for Hudson vet for overnight, leukemia test, anesthitizing
    $33 for spay at Northboro
    $16 for overnights
    $62 for shots/stool

If you'd like to contribute anything, I'd love you for it...you can
send it to Diana Urban, HLO2-2/N08. I really appreciate it...

Thanx, and I'll keep you posted... Di & Li

That's great news Diane! Glad to hear the trap worked for you.

I would keep her in a small room of her own. That will make her
feel more secure. Be very patient with her and give her time
to adjust. Since she knows you, it probably would be better if
you kept her, but I don't know the situation so I don't know
    if this is possible.

Let me know when you can return the trap. I think I'll need it
    for someone else.

(Best $30 I ever invested - buying that trap.)

My little baby's doing fine at the vet...she's been spayed and has had
her shots...she has worms though, but that'll be taken care of. I'm
going to bring her to my friends tomorrow night...cross your fingers
for me that she adapts well to him because he'll keep her if so. Oh
yeah, it cost me another $25 to have her spayed because she was in heat
and they said it costs more...I can't believe all this money for 1
little kitty. Hey, anyone have any cute names for a little calico...I
want it to spunky like her, maybe named after a real "tough" lady.

    Thanx, Di & Li

Oh yeah, it's so nice to come home and not see her sitting outside by
the chimney trying to keep warm, I know she's nice and warm where she
    is...what a feeling of relief!!

Well, Isadora comes to mind, after Isadora Duncan.
Don't know if thats "tough" but definitely independant.

How about Madonna, Cher, Sinead (sp??). I've always like
Spaz (spastic) for one that's a little on the wild side.

Sandy (who just nicknamed Dewey with Dewhead..this cat is nuts!)

Joan of Arc and Mae West. (am I dating myself or what...??)

I hope it all works out well.

whoa! Now THAT'S tough!!! Actually, even if you don't like her
politics, she is a gutsy, honest lady and any cat should be honored to
bear her name as her "human handle"....we know, of course, that cats have
secret cat names that they don't tell us.   8^}

I LOVE MAE WEST!! She's one of my absolute favorite women!
Independant! Would take anything a man would offer but didn't need em!
Think about the kind of person she must have been to project such
a sexy image during and right after the victorian era!!!!!!!!!!!

Billie after Billie Jean King, the tennis player, or
Natina Navrotolova (butchered the spelling on that one!),
    or Christie Everett?

Hey, lots of good ideas here... I like Spunky too, but my friend wants
to pick a woman's name... I like Mae West or Billy even Godiva...
Someone here thought of Desdimona (Dez for short)...anywone know who
she was...I think out of Shakespeare or something. This is fun...I'm
getting her in an hour, and the vet says she's been doing real well
today and eating. Wish me luck tonight!!

    Thanx all, Di & Li

P.S. Linus has been wondering where she is I think...he keeps checking
out the windows at night and I think he wonders where she went because
    she was a regular...

DESDIMONA - Wasn't she the drippy female Othello strangled?

>> DESDIMONA - Wasn't she the drippy female Othello strangled?

well, I think Shakespear might have looked at it in a slightly different
light......she was indeed a shakespearean character...but, was she the
misguided, unfortunate victim in Othello...oh well, it's been
years since I've been forced to read the Bard, and quite frankly, I thought
he was just a little overdone, y'know?   8^}

Frankly, if you're looking for tough women in Literature, Lady McBeth would
be in the top 10 - after all, she drove her man to commit murder...

How about Lilli - for Lilli Langtree, the famous British beauty who was
independent all her life - lived as mistress to the Crown Prince (Victoria's
son and the future king), had a child out of wedlock, married a much younger
man and worked as an actress (SCANDALOUS!!) to build a fortune with which
she retired to the south of France (I think). Or, Margot for Dame Margot,
the famous ballerina who sponsored R. Nureyev into world fame on the stage.
She worked as a ballerina until she was 60 years old...and that is really
tough to do.
4224.18XCUSME::KENDRICKFri Dec 07 1990 19:5413
How about Harriet after Harriet Beecher Stowe and Harriet Tubman?

    Eleanor after Eleanor Roosevelt.

    Sally after Sally Ride.

    Rose for Rose Kennedy.

    Shirley for Shirley Chisolm.

Have to agree with Maggie after Margaret Thatcher, though. She's not
nicknamed the Iron Lady for nothing!

4224.19PipiSALSA::PARKSFri Dec 07 1990 20:563
How about "Pipi"(sp?) after Pipi Longstocking.
She is a tough little tomboy and wasn't she an orphan? ;^)
