2973.0. "CAN SOMEONE HELP??" by NRADM::MCGOWAN () Mon Oct 23 1989 11:15

Hi, can anyone out there recommend a reputable "no kill" shelter
for cats. I know someone who has decided to get rid of her kitties.
I have hopefully convinced her not to just send them to the animal
rescue league, but to a shelter instead. One kitty is 13 years
old. There is nothing wrong with him. It breaks my heart to think
what could happen to him if he ended up at the animal rescue league.
I would prefer a shelter in the area of Worcester, Leominster, or
Lancaster. If there is not a shelter close to these areas I will
volunteer to take them to a place further away. This whole thing
has been bothering me all weekend. Can someone give me some info
    as soon as possible?

    Thanks,
    Arlene

re: 13 yr old cat -

You're probably going to have to place this cat yourself as No-kill
shelters won't take a cat this old. They consider them unadoptable.
A regular shelter will put the cat to sleep immediately for the
    same reason.

You can call and check anyway. Some no kill shelters are:
Alliance for animals 617 235-4438 (Boston)
Kitty Angels in Tyngsboro call directory asst.
    Bosler Humane in Barre - 508 882-3136

I hope your friend has a pretty good reason for getting rid of
a 13 yr old cat! Its going to be tough on a kitty that age and
the cats options are pretty limited because of her age. Good
Luck. Elaine Bosler in Barre may be your best bet. Perhaps
your friend would be willing to pay Elaine for the care of her
    cat.

      Nancy DC

p.s. Thanks for getting involved and trying to help these cats.

sometimes a vet can help place a cat this old. I got a WONDERFUL
cat this way - and she happened to be 13 years old too.

God, but I hope someone can help. I know someone who has 2 kitties
that she wants to get rid of. She is planning to take them to the
animal rescue league. One kitty is a spayed male, 13 years old,
orange and white short hair, in perfect health. The other is a
5 year old female, spayed, calico, also in perfect health. If these
poor little tykes go the animal rescue league they will surely be
put down. I have been a basket case all weekend about this. Please,
someone, help. I am running out of time. Thank you Nancy D. for
your input on animal shelters. I passed this info along via All-in
    One.

Got to run to a meeting. I will check this file later.

    Thanks,
    Arlene

2973.5HOW DOES THIS WORK?NRADM::MCGOWANMon Oct 23 1989 18:327
HI, ITS ME. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW THIS WORKS. I LOOKED IN THE
415 FILE. WHERE IS MY NOTE? I HAVE NOT HEARD FROM THE PERSON WITH
THE KITTIES. I AM AFRAID TO CALL HER BECAUSE SHE MAY HAVE ALREADY
DISPOSED OF THEM. ANYWAY, HOW DO I ACCESS REPLIES IN THE 415 FILE?

    THANKS

It looks like you intended to add a reply to note 415, but instead
of giving the reply command you said write, so a new note was
created, and one of the moderators moved it to this note. Maybe
a moderator could move it again to 415, that seems the simplest,
or you could try adding your message to 415 again (read 415, then say
reply. Watch to see what the note number is when your reply is
    accepted, just to double check.)

and Arlene, remember to turn off the CAPS LOCK - noters call that
"SHOUTING" and you shouldn't SHOUT unless you have something to shout
about, or unless you don't know any better...

I entered a similar note--#2923 and Pam (the moderator) gave me
instructions on how to find all the notes that listed no-kill
    shelters.

We are in a similar situation trying to place my future sister-in-law's
    2 older kitties.

Talked to Sterling Animal Shelter who said that they would take
them but with a donation to help defray the cost of food and shelter
since, due to their ages, they would probably take a while to place.
(I believe that the donation was $35.00 or $45.00 for every 2 weeks--
Bruce, my fiance, was the one who actually talked to them--he's been
a gem, even driving all the way into Boston last night to take in a
hooded litter box in efforts to have his sister hang on to the kitties
    long enough to place them.)

Good luck to all of us in this situation--

    Barbara -
There has been alot of controversy around Sterling Animal Shelter.
Also, a friend of mine who works for an animal shelter told me to
stay away from that place. You might want to try another shelter.
      Just a suggestion

Have you tried Adopt-A-Cat in Concord, MA? (508)358-5459 "Linda".

Or possibly Kitty Angels, Tyngsboro,MA, (508)649-4681?
