1854.0. "Boarding in Northboro/Marlboro ?" by VAXWRK::DUMAS (Wow, too late, we're there.) Tue Oct 11 1988 14:49

Does anyone know of a good boarding kennel in the Northboro/
Marlboro area ? What should I look for in a kennel ? This
will be Latka and Simka's first time away from home.

Well, I don't know your area...but first I'd ask the vet to board.
If the vet does not board, call around, and aske them to let you
walk thru. If they keep you out of the kennels, they could be hiding
    something!

Some people board at animals shelters, it they have room. If it
was a dog, I'd think about it. But, cats carry all kinds of disease
transmissible to each other and infections run rampent, even if
the animal is innoculated. don't try boarding at a shelter.

There is an excellent boarding facility in Berlin, right near
NRO. The woman takes cats only, and although I've never used
her, I know people that do, and they love her. The name of the
place is Catnaps, and her phone number is 838-2627.

This place is probably too far for you -it is in the Norfolk/Walpole
area - its called Northeast Canine Academy. I boarded my dog there
but while I was there I saw where the cats were boarded. At
that time - which was about 4 years ago, the cat cages could be
seen by an attendant at all times. The cages were all inside of
an enclosed area and the enclosed area had "trees" and logs for
climbing. Each cat was let into the enclosed area for a portion
of the day for exercise or just to lie on one of the "branches".
Since they could all be watched by the attendant, and since they
were still in an enclosed area, and the enclosed area was inside of
an enclosed room, they looked to be in good hands. If they cared
for the cats like they cared for the dogs (which I think they did)
the animals received fine care. And if the cat set-up still remains
as I saw it, the cats looked quite comfortable and safe.

Please be careful about boarding in a shelter (I'm sure there not
all the same) but my mother-in-law took her dog and cat to the Humane
Society in lowell to be boarded and if she didn't over hear someone
comment on why she was putting them to sleep she would have come
back and found her pets were gone. Maybe this was a slip in the
paperwork but she just read the other day that the same place had
given away (or maybe put to sleep but wouldn't admit it) someone's
dog who was a boarder. So be careful.

you might want to consider having a pet sitter come into your home.
It will be a lot less tramatic for the babies.

    RE: .5 - I AGREE TOTALLY.....

I don't know if I could ever "board" my cats anywhere. I think
they're just to old (4 & 7) to adjust properly. Also, I'm not sure
I could handle them hating me when I went to pick them up......
"Mom, how could you do that to us?....."

1854.7Try a pet-sitterMARKER::REEDVote NO on Question 3!Fri Oct 21 1988 20:4128
Hi there! Speaking from past experiences (?sp) both as a petsitter
and having boarded a pet, I would whole heartedly vote for a petsitter.

First of all, your pet doesn't get traumatized by a new environment
without his/her loved one. Being at home, and without you, at least
he/she/they are in familiar surroundings. Second, I've found if
you have someone there to care for them, they get undivided attention
plus your house/apartment will look lived in.

With a petsitter, you can make arrangements for the mail/newspapers,
etc. to be picked up, the plants to be watered, etc. Usually the
cost can be close to what kennels/boarding houses charge. I know
that my pet always was lethargic when I picked her up for the boarding
kennel. But when I had someone to sit at my place, she was just
annoyed at me but otherwise healthy.

I don't mean to knock kennels or boarding places because some are
very reputable, I just prefer to keep my *kids* at home.

Have you checked note 400? Some people in this conference are
    interested in swap pet-sitting.

    Good luck!

PS- I'd offer to petsit but I'm a little too far since I don't live
    in Stow anymore.
