996.0. "Schizo cat?" by SMAUG::RIO () Tue Dec 29 1987 23:50

    Hi,

I need help from some of you who sound very experienced in taking
in strays. I placed a note in 415 for adoption of a grey angora
who appeared at my house around August time frame. No one responded
so, not being able to turn it over to a shelter where I will never
know if it got adopted or put to sleep, I decided to keep it. Took
it to the vet and had everything done to it. Luckily no feline
luke! Only a few roundworms which the Vet gave me medicine for.

That's the end of the good news. Since I have taken her in, her
disposition is terrible. One minute she is purring letting me pet
her, the next my arm is bleeding from a very bad lashing with all
four claws! She is picking fights with Spaz, my five year old tiger
that has been mine since 6 weeks old. Poor Spaz runs and hides
under the bed. She absolutely hates Fuzzball. Growls at her all
the time. Fuzzball never goes out, uses the box 3 times a day (will
be checking with the Vet on that one), and eats, sleeps and hisses.

How much patience do I need before I end up with scars all over
me or worse, scars all over Spaz? Will a cat with a schizo disposition
ever change? Will Spaz get a complex from Fuzzball being in the
house? Fuzzball has appeared to have taken over the house. It's
hers. I go to put her out, she hisses and tries to claw me.

I would really like to see her disposition change. I'm not used
to a bad tempered cat. Spaz loves everyone and cuddles with me
constantly. But Fuzzball needs something. At first, I thought
it was because she was abused and living outdoors didn't help (she
looked as if she had a collar on once). She definitely had been
    housetrained.

One thing I don't do is hit her when she is bad. I don't believe
animals understand being hit and it only worsens their temper.

Any suggestions will be accepted. I also would still like to find
a home for her. I don't think I will be able to keep her if this
    keeps up.

    thanks,
    dr

See note 908 and it's replies. Your new cat sounds just like what
my Pussycat was like when I first got him (and he turned out great
-- and my scars have faded :-)). However, I didn't have another
cat in the house to worry about. It does sound like she definitely
wants to be an indoor cat, though. If your other cat can stand
it, letting her stay indoors will calm things a little (she might
be paniced that putting her outside means she's about to be deprived
of warmth, food, shelter, all that stuff.) Try a more thorough
physical at the vet to be sure she isn't in discomfort from some
physical problem (my guys use their box twice in 24 hours, each.)
It sounds like you are really hanging in there. Perhaps as she
comes to feel more secure (it took Pussycat a few months) and if
you keep heaping love on both of them things will work out. Please
    let us know.

996.2give her some time - it will workPBA::DALEYWed Dec 30 1987 13:2623
Yes, it will probably take awhile for the new cat to "find her place"
in your household. I had taken in a stray who seemed just fine
until one of my other cats came into view - example, the new cat
would be sitting on my bed and one of the others would just be walking
down the hallway- and the new one would charge the older one(s),
flipping them and even to flying fur. When I mentioned my
predicament to another person who had gone through the same type
of situation, she told me that the new one was just trying to
find where she fit in the scheme of things in the house.

And yes - after a time (in this case it was a month or so, but
the time period can vary with different cats from an immediate fit
to a couple months) she stopped her unfavorable behavior and is VERY
sweet and passive with the others (BTW - there are 6 others). The
others were initially afraid of her because of her "temper" but now
    they will even sleep together.

I would give her some time, and not expect a great deal from her
so soon. When she knows she is there to stay, and that she doesn't have
to fight for food, she will more than likely make a turn-around.

I don't think your cat is schizo. She just needs some love and
understanding. I got Barney and Gonezo as kittens and six months
later I got Ben from a woman who was going to put him to sleep.
He was approximately 6-8 months old and I was already his third
owner. Anyway, it took a while, but finally all three cats got
along. Yes, a lot of fur flew. However, it wasn't till about 2
years later I realize what a change there was in Ben. Since the
change was so gradual, I never noticed that I could pick him up
at anytime I felt like it without getting bitten or clawed, and
I could scratch his tummy (a Gonezo favorite) without worrying about
being scarred for life. Ben still has his moments, but now I know
when to leave him alone. I'm real glad I kept him. He's turned
out to be a most wonderful, joyous, and affectionate cat. It just
took a lot of time, patience, and lots of love.

Just in case you missed it, read 2.141, a new intro note. One
of the cats in it sounds just like Fuzzball.

When we first got Tiptoe he was the same way. He adopted us about
a year and a half ago. All summer he hung around the house just
being around our other kitties but we couldn't get anywhere near
him. Then when it became late fall and was starting to get cold
I put out a dish of food for him and after I went inside he gobbled
it all up. This went on for about a month and then one night it
got really really cold, colder than last night, and around 8 at
night we heard this scratching on the door. it was Tiptoe begging
to come in. We let him in and he ran upstairs and hid until morning
and then it wazs right back out again. Anyway, for the first three
months after that first night there was definitely fur flying and
scratches abounded. He did finally settle down a bit. He still hates
to be picked up but really loves to be petted especially on the
tummy. So don't worry everything will work out all right.

P.S. He is still kind of strange. Whenever ther is a rain storm
he begs to go out and he sits on the front porch withhis face pointed
straight up at the rain. We should have called him stormwatch.
