2347.0. "THREE WEEK OLD ABANDONED KITTEN NEEDS HOME" by YOSMTE::CORDESBRO_JO () Fri Mar 31 1989 17:47

I am sitting here in my office, trying to comfort a two and a half
to three week old kitten who is hungry and wondering why someone
would leave him to die on the side of the freeway.

A co-worker came to see me to say that another co-worker's sister
is a Caltrans worker who found an abandoned kitten on the side of
the freeway. This kitten was abandoned on purpose! It was nestled
in a box lined with shredded newspaper and an old rag. He can't
be more than 3 weeks old since his ears are not yet open.

He is skin and bones. He also has what appears to be tar stuck
to the pads of his feet. There are sores on his feet, probably
from mom trying to clean the tar off. One of his eyes is infected.

I couldn't let him die. I am taking him home and I will try to
hand raise him. If anyone is interested in adopting this tyke,
please respond. He is an adorable red tabby with white feet, chest
and tummy. He also has a white blaze on his nose. He looks to
be a longhair, but time will tell.

After all he has been through already, he is very amenable to handling,
and purrs his little heart out when I pick him up.

I will need to find him a home. I am definitely at cat max already,
and have a litter due this weekend.

I'm going to go over there (I called Jo about 5 mins after sheposted
the note!)--it looks like Jo can wean the poor critter and I'll
take it from there (I haven't the ability to hand feed it right
now! Poor Jo! So many cats!)

Fret not peoples....kim maybe appear to be crusty, but I never can
turn down a little critter. :)

Its a good thing you got there before I did Kim. This little tyke
sounds adorable. I've been at firm cat max of 2 forever and have
not even been able to take other kitties in that I wanted, but I
probably would have broken down for this one. Glad he has a good
    home.

Looks like Kim and I will be working out the details. Kim was a
little suprised at how young and small this guy is. Ken and I will
raise him (barring unforseen circumstances) until he is old enough
to wean and vaccinate, then he will go to Kim.

He had a nice lunch and is now snuggled down to sleep in an old
    wool sweater.

I don't know much about tiny kittens, but If your cat is due to have kittens
this weekend, can't the 3 week old nurse with the new kittens (closely
supervised of course)?
2347.7CIMNET::ARMSTRONGFri Mar 31 1989 20:4510
If you try to nurse the adopted kitten with new kittens. Please
keep a close eye on them. I had tried this about two years ago
when my cat had died a week after she had a litter. The mother
that I tried to nurse my kittens with did not take kindly to it
at all. I ended up feeding them for 4-6 weeks with an eye dropper
and kittens milk. It was a lot of work, but definitely worth it!
    They all survived.

Good luck with your new little kitten. He sounds abosolutely adorable.

2347.8I can't do that, but thanks for the inputYOSMTE::CORDESBRO_JOFri Mar 31 1989 20:5917
Actually, since I don't know anything about this kitten and where
it came from, or what it might have been exposed to, I cannot allow
it anywhere near my pregnant queen. Kittening is very stressful
for the queen and she is very susceptible to illness at that time.
If she was to get sick, then her litter would get sick too. It
    is too great a risk.

I will keep this baby isolated and hand raise him. I helped a neighbor
feed a litter of kittens recently that are a little older than this
guy. The mom cat had gotten out for the day and was having a so
much fun she had forgotten the time. We fed the litter because
mom had missed the evening meal. Since that cat is an outdoor cat
too, and her kittens are past the danger age, we may be able to
get this kitten adopted into that family. If not, I will hand raise
    him.

    Jo
2347.9And boy, are Jo's cats handsome!!!!JULIET::APODACA_KISongs from the Razor's EdgeFri Mar 31 1989 21:1614
Yes, I was surprised at how little he was! It's been a LOOOONG
time I have been around very little kitties....for some strange
reason I expected a bit bigger! I've seen pet rats bigger than
this guy....it makes me sad that someone would leave him near a
VERY busy freeway, of all places, and a freeway which sees more
than it's share of dead animals (usually dogs). :(

At any rate, between Jo and I, I'm sure we'll keep you posted on
    the little tyke's progress!

Now, to plan on getting it into the apt without the manager seeing.

About having the kitten be accepted by a nursing mom, I wonder if
it would help to have the smell of the new kitten be like the smell
of the "real" kits. Maybe cuddle the real kits and then try to
transfer the smell to the new one before introducing it.

2347.12I think I have it coveredYOSMTE::CORDESBRO_JOFri Mar 31 1989 23:4610
Don't worry everyone, I know what I am doing here (:^D). If the
neighbors cat is still nursing kits, I will work out all the details
for her (I have done this type of thing a time or two, if you know
    what I mean).

I am also no stranger to hand raising kittens. Livee is living
proof of that. She is now four months old, weighs three and a half
pounds, and is as feisty as ever.

2347.16A Success StoryYOSMTE::CORDESBRO_JOMon Apr 03 1989 15:1726
Well, Freeway (as I have taken to calling him) is doing great.
I introduced him to his foster mom and littermates on Friday evening
(rubbed him all over with a foster littermate and then set him down,
the minute he started to cry, foster mom was all over him, washing,
nuzzling, mothering) and everything is going great.

He had his first vet visit on Saturday morning. His paw pads needed
some attention. Dr. Rue had to cut the tar away so he had big open
wounds on his feet for awhile. He is on antibiotics three times
a day, and his feet seem to be healing well. Dr. Rue is concerned
that his paw pads may not grow back normally and that one toe may
have to be declawed due to a misshapen paw pad on that toe, but other
than that she pronounced him extremely healthy and extremely lucky
    to be alive.

Freeway and his foster family are getting along great. Foster mom's
name is Muffin, brother and sister have not been named yet. They
are about 5 weeks older than Freeway, and think he is the best toy
they have ever had. When I went over this morning to give him his
medicine, he was in the middle of a rough-and-tumble with the little
female kitten. He was getting the worst of the game, but didn't
    complain a bit.

I will keep you posted on his progress.

2347.23Update of Freeway's progressYOSMTE::CORDESBRO_JOFri Apr 14 1989 19:3219
I wanted to let you all know that Freeway is doing great! He is
happy, fat, healthy, and full of energy. He can now rough and tumble
with his older adoptive littermates, without *always* taking the
    worst of it.

And, the really good news... his paw pads are completely healed!
I was playing with him the other night and he was on his back with
all four feet in the air, when it suddenly dawned on me that all
four feet had perfect little pink pads on them! No signs of sores
or disfigurement on the pads! I am thrilled.

I now think that he was younger than I first thought when I got
him. I guess him to be about 3 weeks old now, due to the fact that
he is just now getting nubby little bumps where his teeth will be. He
was probably between 7 and 10 days old when he was found.

We ought to choose a birthday for him.

The older siblings seem to have gotten the better of Freeway last
night. Julie brought him over in the evening cause she went to
check on him and one of his eyes was swollen shut.

I checked it out and it seems to be a scratch from a tiny kitten
nail. I put him on medication and told Julie that I would be over
to check on him this morning.

His eye looks much better today, and seems to be healing. I may
still run him into the vet to have her look at it. Just want to
be sure that I am right about this.

The little guy is soooooo cute. He came running over to greet me
this morning, and attempted to *climb* my pantyhose!

I think that March 31st would be a good birthday for him, but it
really will have to be up to Kim.

Julie and Carrie have been great! They are the two women who have
let their cat take him in. Anyway, they are as attached to him
as I am. Everyday they ask me if I am sure that I have found him
a good home, and that he will be well taken care of. They even
asked if I thought it would be weird for them to ask Kim for pictures
of Freeway every now and then! With the three of us looking out
for him like this, that kitten has it made. He will be spoiled
rotten by the time Kim gets him. :^D

just so you all know out there, yes, i am still planning on taking
    in the little tyke freeway.

also, jo, i knnow i'm a bit jumping the gun, but we need to figure
out a date where i can come get him (a couple of weeks to go, isn't
it?) what with the shows coming up and all, i know YOU'LL be busy
at the end of the month!

i am the proud owner of a kitty cage (a crate or kennel to those
of you who use PROPER words to describe things). i put it down
on the living room while ashley was wandering around rubbing and
being cute. opened the door (i wanted to see if the cats would
fit okay) and scratched the bottom of the cage with my nails, saying
my usual stupid talk (do we have a note on how silly people talk
to their animals) to her to get her to go in. "who's in the box?"
always works to get her to jump in boxes (the cat loves those things),
and sure enough, one scratch and silly-talk and zip! in she went.
not exactly a condo but she could stand up with her head down and
with room to spare on the sides. she sniffed around and checked
it out and then came back out. looks like she won't have a problem
with it (ashley is a very good traveller, no problems in the car
    at ALL).

next was bones's turn (with ashley out of the box, of course).
he's not very receptive to silly talk like "who's in the box?" so
i picked him up and plunked him down in front of the door with his
head aiming in. zip! in he went to look around. he just looked
at me when i shut the door (no fits or trying to get out), and sat
in it a bit, sniffin and checking things out, then strolled onout.
a fairly recent addition to my kitty family (replete with health
problems galore), but he was good in the car (outside of a cage,
mind you--just sat on the floor and meowed with ashley--of course
i meowed back), and it seems as if he doesn't/won't mind the cage
either. since he's going in for surgery probably right at the first
of the month, he'll be among the first to test ride in it. :)

now, to see if freeway likes it. ;)

Freeway has been in a carrier twice already. To the vet and back
when he was only a week or so old. Of course, he probably doesn't
    remember it now....

I will check on the tyke tonight and possibly vaccinate him (provided
that he is now bigger than the syringe, the method of measurement
that I am using to judge if the time to vaccinate is right). He
will need another vaccine in 3 weeks, which you can give him if
you are willing. Otherwise, I will keep him till it is done and
you can have him after that.

I will be showing the last two weekends in May, on Kitten Watch
the first weekend of June, showing the second, at the CFA annual
    meeting the third,....

am getting excited about it! :)

2347.34He is an oldster at 7 weeks?!YOSMTE::CORDESBRO_JOThu May 11 1989 15:3517
He is still too small to take blood from, and he is still only about
7-8 weeks old Kim. He won't even be four months old in July! I
would strongly recommend not introducing him to your other cats
until we find out his leukemia status.

He has not yet reached the "bigger than the syringe" size, so
vaccination is being postponed for a couple more days.

I plan to give him the 4 in 1 shots. And you can take care of the
second shot if he is in your home by then, otherwise, I will take
    care of it.

Rather than paying for his care, how would you like to work it off?
I have to "bomb" the house this weekend, and then bathe everyone
and could use some help since Ken won't be home!

and yes, i knnow 7-8 weeks isn't old, it just seems that way! i
told you i'm getting more and more excited about my new aquisition
    each day that passes. :)

and yes, that's why i asked about leukemia--don't want to risk my
cats, since i know they are negative.

Wonderful! Now the bad news, we have to bathe 15 cats!

I have all this planned for Saturday, since I have a mom too
and she would be pretty upset if I stood her up for cat bathing!
I plan to relocate the cats, bomb the house while I weed the yard,
then start to baths. After the baths, I want to paint the master
bedroom, fertilize the yard, and anything else that I have been
putting off for the last several months.

This is the problem of spending all your weekends at shows, your
one free weekend becomes packed with household chores.

hey now i dont know anything about yard work, i live in an apt and
greenery to me is the the lettuce in the crisper part of the frige.
    ;D

be sure to send/give me directions (i know the 101 part) and your
phone in case i end up in hollister by mistake. ;)

(are you cats good about baths? mine are, but i don't take any
guff from then, but you know how it is with other people's cats
and kids--you dunno how to handle em else you might offend the other
    person!)

    ta!

Most of the kids are good about baths, but Westie and Limoges are
still youngsters, and are given to try and get away. The six week
old kittens won't be bathed, too young, so that brings the number
down to 11. The ones who will hate it the most are Winston, Monroe
and Tilly, who don't have to have baths very often.

Don't worry about the gardening, you can come for the bathing part
only (aren't I generous?), or you can visit with Freeway.

I will give you directions via mail. I appreciate your offer to
help, but you still have time to back out.

Kim, I vaccinated Freeway last night. Wasn't easy, that little
guy is full of vim and vigor. Could hardly get him to sit still
    long enough.

I think we should make arrangements for you to come get him. He
seems to be ready to settle in to a new home. He is getting a little
too settled into his foster home.

Okie, when is a good time? I go to school 4 nites a week, and the
earliest I get out is 8pm. By the time I yelled-screamed-drove
down 101 to there, it'd be nine--I don't mind so much (makes for
a better commute on the way back), but I don't know about the people
who have him. I guess you could bring him to work and I could take
him home during lunch....you have my carrier.

    Lemme know!

Tut...don't thank me, Jo did it all. Actually, he isn't in my hands
yet-maybe, since I'm going to play hooky from school tonite, I can
go down and get him (i just wanna see Monroe again, that's why I
left my carrier). Do you think Jo will notice the difference if
I swap Freeway for Two ton Monroe? ;) I mean, the size difference
between a 7-8 week old kitten and Mr. Monroe is negligable....

    ;D

Not only would I notice the difference, your kitty food budget would
too! Monroe didn't get to be 13 pounds by eating like a bird you know...

Well, there is more to love this way...

    re: eating like a bird

Strange phrase since birds eat several times their own weight
    per day!
2347.47It is a strange phraseYOSMTE::CORDESBRO_JOThu May 18 1989 17:256
Several times a bird's weight would come no where close to what Monroe
eats! Or maybe I should say what Monroe wishes he could eat. Even
with a closely supervised diet, he maintains his not so trim 13+
    pound frame.

re: .47 and Monroe....sigh....what I mean is that when you say
someone or some animal eats like a bird you are implying that they
eat several times their own weight in food per day!! silly!! :-)
