3651.0. "Question about vaccinations" by ESIS::FEASE (Andrea Midtmoen Fease) Wed May 30 1990 14:50

    Hi All,

Here's a really stupid question ;-) . My boys are due for their
physicals/shots/etc at the end of June (around the 20th). Now I find
out that their regular doctor won't be in until July (she's on
vacation, so they can't go in early either). Can their vaccinations
wait until then? We're talking early July, although it could be as
late as the end of July (so they would be overdue by about a month).

Since both of them have had problems (especially Bigfoot with his
surgery) I would like their regular vet to examine them, but I don't
want them getting sick going without their vaccinations.

         So ... can they wait?

         Thanks!

If you mean their "boosters", then waiting a month
isn't going to cause any harm.
Sounds like your reg vet is worth waiting for.

Well this seems about as good a spot as any for this.

Sasha and Duke went and had shots yesterday.

Each were given a Feline Leuk. shot, Rabies, and FVRCP-C
    	(whatever that is) and Ivermectin.

Well they were quiet all night and I figured they were
sluggish from all the medication. Well this morning
Sasha didn't look so hot so I went home at lunchtime.
She's still very sluggish. Her eyes seem kind of glazed
over and she walks like it hurts. I try and pick her up
and she cries and growls. However her tail wags and she
will let me pet her and scratch her behind the ears.

I'm probably being overly paranoid but is this normal?
I called the vet but they were having a problem with the
phones or something at the office so I got the answering
    	service.

    	Thanks!
    	JJ

I'd bring her right in - sounds like she should be seen. Either
that, or the muscles that the injections went in are VERY sore.

    Good Luck

A FeLv shot can put a cat in the dumps for 24 hours. My vet said if it
lasted longer than that to bring the cat in so he could give it a fluid
shot if it was getting dehydrated and so he could check it over to be safe.
Holly had this kind of reaction and when I asked the vet about it later,
I got the impression that I should have brought her in after a day
and that I was lucky she didn't dehydrate.

3651.5I wouldn't worry about waiting until JulyTOPDOC::TRACHMANEmacX Exotics * 264-8298Wed May 30 1990 17:2219
    re: 0

    Hmm, I don't think it's a stupid question - guesss I did though
when I asked my vet the same one, so I know how you feel. Welll,
his (Dr. Brody's) answer was: for the 3-way booster, each of the
3 things have varying lengths of protection; one item may protect
for 9 or 10 months, one for 13 months, and one for 12 months. The
avergage booster period arrived at by most vets is to reimunize at
12 months - that catches just about everything and keeps the
immunity levels high enough to protect the animal. If you miss by
a month or so, generally speaking it won't harm the animal.

BUT, if we are speaking of kitten shots, that's a little different.
The series of 3 or 4 kitten shots really should be given on a regular
schedule to protect the kitten's immunity, which it isn't receiving
any more from the mother. If the animal is 2 or 3 years old, and
has had regular boosters, waiting a month shouldn't cause any problem.

nippa was sluggish for 24 hours or so after the Felv shot. THe
ivermectin may also be a culprit, it can make horses sluggish after
a dose, so why not kitties?

What is ivermectin for? I don't think I'm familiar what that one?
3651.8wormerFRAGLE::PELUSOPAINTS; color your corralWed May 30 1990 17:325
Ivermectin is an all around, all purpose, wormer. It is sold
in the horse (and dog world, I think) with the brand name Zimecterin.
The vet has perscribed it for Nippa occasionally for worms. I have
also used the brand name Panacur for both Nippa and the horses.
    Panacur's medical name is Fenbendazole.

Loki is 9 and has been vaccinated all his life. Bigfoot will be
12 and has been vaccinated for about 3 years. I just wanted to make
sure that a month delay would be okay, and it sounds like it is.
Thanks for the peace of mind!

Well I think he gave the Ivermectin for their ear mites.
We have been using Xenodine drops but the buggers just
    	won't go away.

I told Cary to keep an eye on her when he gets home as I'll
be out for part of the evening and if she isn't better by
morning, I'll call the vet again. My poor baby!

Funny, our sickest one is ok. He was a little sluggish but
it wore off pretty much by lunchtime today.

    	Thanks

When I had Thai and Midnight vaccinated for their regular shots plus Felv a
couple of weeks ago, both of them were sluggish and even irritable until the
following day. They were back to their lovable, sweet selves the next day.

Well she was much better this morning. She jumped up on
the bathroom vanity as usual and ate some food and sat in
the window as she very often likes to do. She's still moving
a bit slow but I think she'll be ok. I made sure there was
plenty of water left so she doesn't dehydrate. I figure if
she's hungry, she's bound to be thirsty too.

Re: medicine that smells like bananas

Elaine I think Albon smells like bananas. We used it to treat
coccidia in a kitten once. It is thick, gooey, and yellow.

Another suggestion on vaccinating cats...if you know that the kitties
will be due in a month, but the vet will be away, you could always
boost them now before the vet leaves.

One thing to remember when your cat gets a Felv shot; that shot
hurts! The regular three in one and four in one shots don't cause
kitty any pain (usually), but the Felv shot burns. So, the kitty
may be sore for a bit afterwards.

    Hi Jo,

The yellow banana smelly stuff I have is for worms.

Actually, having those kittes boosted before is a good idea also !!
Mom would probably have a nicer time away know it was taken care of!

3651.16WR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOset home/cat_max=infinityThu May 31 1990 20:5618
Sounds like the same stuff Elaine. Coccidia is a type of intestinal
parasite. It is also an antibiotic I guess, since I have read in
here about folks being given it by the vet for various other illnesses.

On the subject of meds, I recently discovered Biosol Aquadrops.
I had always used Pectillin or some other type of diarrhea medication,
and then another breeder told me about Biosol. It works very well
on diarrhea. It has an antibiotic that is particularly good at
working only in the intestinal tract. The ingredient is Neomycin
Sulfate I think. Anyway, at a recent show, I fed Moody some Sheba
and it was too rich for him. He had a bad bout of diarrhea, and
we were out of town, away from home and the vet. A fellow breeder
gave me some Biosol and I gave him a small dose. His diarrhea cleared
right up and he was fine. A follow up check at the vets confirmed
that he was healthy, and that is was probably the food that upset
    him.

Yup, I used Biosol once. I had never heard of it either. Reason
being, that I had *NEVER* had a problem with the big "D" in 35 years

hmmm. That's probably a VERY GOOD idea - having one in my
show bag - I never thought of that. Lordy, Lil is so easy
to show - this cat has never in her life ever been 'sick'.
She a small bout the big 'd' once, and I forget why or what
caused it - healthy little bugger! Lil does get tender
vitals at shows only - treats, you know! She does like
them. I probably should carry more meds, but I haven't
needed any so.....I dun't. I think Katenka was healthier
than I am, and Lil is healthier than both Tenka and I!!
