4199.1I KNOW the situation...JAWS::MCDONOUGHTue Nov 27 1990 13:489
I used to have a male (neutered) Siamese who's favorite thing was to
go from room-to-room at 3:00 in the morning howling at the top of his
lungs...It used to drive me nuts, but we simply had to get used to it.

I'm not sure there is anything that would stop this behavior...a
possibility is another Siamese for companionship...maybe a girl??? I
don't know if this would help, but it may...

Siamese are very talkative, loud cats!!! That's what I think of when I
think Siamese! They seem to demand a lot as well, like food &
    attention.

Bon jour, Jean,

I hate to tell you this, but being noisy is not a "bug", it is one of
the *features* of the Siamese breed. It is normally referred to as being
"vocal" and people who are owned by Siamese usually consider this an
endearing trait. I've had Siamese cats for over 20 years and I just love
having cats that I can have a conversation with. We discuss everything
from the current world situation, to gourmet cooking (not mine!), to...
well, anything!

I never heard of anyone training a Siamese cat not to talk. It might
help you to think about your cat's talking in a more positive light --
for example, you have someone to talk to who will always find you to be
a fascinating conversationalist, and you can impress your friends by
having a cat so intelligent he can talk to people. Possibly you could
lessen his quantity of speech by getting a non-talking, non-Siamese
companion for your cat. It is also possible that he may become less
talkative as he grows older, but don't expect this to happen before he
becomes a teenager.

If your cat's talking is really a problem, you can send him down here
to me! :-)

I really love talkative cats! I know it can be a bit of a pain at
times, especially in the early hours of the morning when they start
shouting for attention though. Georgie isn't Siamese, but people have
told me he probably has some Siamese blood in him because he makes so
much noise. We have some incredible conversations, and I'd really love
    to know what he's saying!

4199.5Not all are loud!AKOCOA::FALLONIsn't that a Mooncat?Tue Nov 27 1990 15:1811
Just to dispell any myths, I have had five siamese cats in my life and
two visiting whole male lynx points. None of which have ever been an
extreme talker! They will speak to you if you are getting their dinner
or if they want it, and also on occasion when you talk silly to them.

The whole male visiting now has such a quiet cry that it is very
pleasant to hear. I have seen the types of cats that cry like you have
mentioned, but NOT ALL do this. Good Luck! and I think you'll get used
to it. A friend might help.

    DITTO!

I too love talkative cats - guess that's why I've always had a Siamese
in the bunch. My first one, Ting-Ling used to walk down the hall,
stare at the closet door (always the same one) and talk to it from any
where to 5 minutes to a quarter of an hour. Toward the end he would go
into a full blown out wail. Not to mention the on-going conversations
we used to have. Gino, my present seal point loves to talk and I can
get him in a conversation for about a good 5-10 minutes. Interesting
thing though, my other two who were not quite as vocal have seemed to
pick some of this up from the "mouth". It's a kick to hear all three
of them going on an on at the same time. I just wish I knew what it
    was they were saying.

Anyhow, welcome to the talkative world of the Siamese cat - don't know
if there's anything much you can do to quiet them down - I've tried
yelling "be quiet" but they just turn around and tell me to shut up!

I have two male and two female Siamese, and the males are definitely
the more talkative! Tas will walk around the house yowling to him-
self, or maybe he uses that to call the other cats. He also talks
back to us when we yell at him for something, like getting on the
kitchen table :^} Beau is usually pretty quiet until he goes to use
the litterbox. Then he lets everyone know what he's up to. (Before
anyone asks, he doesn't meow *while* he's going, but when he's
	covering it up) :^}

Generally, their talking doesn't get excessive unless they're
unhappy about something. It could be that your cat is lonely, and
could use a companion to play with. Siamese are very active cats,
and love to run and chase after each other - it's lots of fun to
	watch - better than TV!

Well, I have a girl and boy that are part siamese. I believe that the
part of them that is Siamese is the mouth. When they are togeather,
along with forming a mutual admiration society, they literally converse
with each other, and believe me, there two have an opinion on everything.
I've found that when I really need some piece and quiet, I put on the
ear protection that I usually use when I am shooting. They work much
better than ear plugs, but make sure that you get the less expensive
ones (which cost about $15) which block all noise, rather than the more
expensive ones (which go for about $25) that filter out loud and sudden
    noises and while amplifying "conversation".

Gino (the mouth) likes to be patted real hard on his back side -
actually makes him salivate with delight while purring up a storm -
another thing, he likes to be lifted slightly off the ground by his
tail (you know you kind of get a good grip right at the base of it and
gently lift as if you were going to inspect his butt) Yea, I know
    strange but wonderful entertainment.

Gino as well as Pippin were a bit upset when we introduced Stitch -
there's a 3-1/2 year difference here, but after the usual obnoxious
antics for a couple of weeks - they turned into one big happy family.
It just takes a little time and patience.

    Good luck,

Don't know if this is news to feliners but cats only MEOW to humans.
They don't meow to other cats--my three growl at one-and-other but
never "speak" among themselves the way they "speak" to me. None of
them are overly vocal but make up for it with noisy paws--where did the
expression "pussy foot" come from? not from Chuck E Cheese that for sure.

I guess I must lucky...I have a girl Siamese I got from thise
notes file, and she is extremely quiet. The only time she makes the
famous Siamese meow is when she is picked up or asked to get down from
someplace she doesn't belong. I think she is much, much too busy
flying to be bothered meowing. When I visualize her, all I can see in
my mind is a flying Siamese - liable to pop up anywhere on any surface
above 6' in height. Her body just flies about the house all day. But
when she sleeps, she sleeps hard. I guess flying is hard work.
We call her Zsa-Zsa the flying Siamese.

    RE:11

Well, mine don't just walk up to each other and MEOW, but
Stitch sure has a lot to say when Pippin puts him off and gets out of
his reach. She'll be sitting high up in an out of the way spot to
avoid his agressiveness (he tends to think she's a horse and likes to
    ride her)
Anyway,he'll be down on the floor looking up straight at her making this
pitiful yowlling/meowing sound - we figure he's telling her he wants
her to come back down and play - then Gino hears this and he'll come
walking down the hall grumbeling in the direction of the other two
(totally disgusted with Stitch - after all he woke him up with all the
howling). Sometimes Pippin will interject a sound or two (if she's got
    any energy left.

True they don't just walk up to eachother and MEOW but I do think they
converse. Stitch has always had this sort of dialog when he's been
    "left holding the furrrrr".

Be a little careful about that slapping -- cats have very fragile

About that slapping - I also had two part Siamese cats that absolutely
loved to play rough. Hard patting on the flank was their favorite.

My friends could never believe this, but they really loved it. .9 was
the first I have ever heard of anyone else having this experience.

I have not had a cat now for 8 years and am desperately trying to find
a part (or even full) Siamese. My husband has been through 6 years of
allergy shots and thinks he is finally ready. I don't believe the cats
ever really bothered him, but he has had this notion in his mind.

Anyway, we would both like to find a part Siamese who talks and likes
to play - so if any of you can point me to a cat with this kind of
personality, please send me mail and I'll look into it right away.

Hay - my female Siamese is "normal" for a Siamese. She also flies
(never walks) around the house. She is very smart and seems to
understand certain commands (although QUIET is not one of them!).

Do other Siamese also cry when touched or picked-up? Most of the
time Ashley will meow in a loud voice if I go by her and touch her.
It also seems like she wants to say "Please don't bother me" yet
she immediately starts to purr after the meow. Is she stange
or is she like alot of other Siamese????????

My other female (older) Siamese is very quiet and shy and would
prefer to be let alone - unless my husband wants to hold her (she
adores him). So they are all the same and yet different!

My guy doesn't fly around the house, he kind of lumbers with what I
call a "John Wayne" walk looking over his shoulder as he goes. Then if
you call his name he starts in with these grumbeling noises - wraaa
-wraa-wraa in a real deep voice. He also comes out with some real
funny sounding stuff when he's picked up - it's not a cry but something
else intermingeled with a real loud purrrrr. When we first got him I
thought that maybe something may have been wrong with him because of
all the noises he made when he was picked up - but it turned out
    that he's just a quacker.

My Korats are a lot like this. FYI Korats are somewhat similar to the
siamese. The come from the same country and the Korats are the
    original cats of Siam.

PITA "grunts" every time you pick her up. It's sort of an "uh". It's
a RIOT! She's also quite vocal. Their description says that they are
not very vocal cats. Well, obviously they never met PITA!! You walk
by her and she cries. And she'll answer you too! You look at her and
say, "What" and she meows. This goes on for a good five minutes with
her answering whatever you say. she's FUNNY.

Silver on the other hand is kind of quiet. No grunts when I pick her
up. the only time she really talks is a "hurry up and get dinner" or a
"ready or not, here I come" when she jumps from the floor up onto my
    shoulder. (-:

Any of your Siamese cats out there mimic the sounds you make or words
you speak? Sometimes I swear Gino will come close to saying "out" when
he's at the back door or no when I tell him not to do something. He
also makes chattering noises while he's sleeping which are triggered by
someone coughing or sneezing. The more you cough or sneeze the more he
    chatters.

My new cat Mr Miyagi is very vocal. He and Ming are both himmies
and she isn't talkative but does "pigeon coos" but Miyagi sort of
talk/cries all the time. It sort of depends what he wants or is
doing what pitch or lenght this noise is. I like it (mostly 'cause
I always have talked to my animals and with him answering I don't
feel like such a nut when someone who doesn't know me enters the
    room.)

I don't want you to think I am prejudice but Mr Miyagi is the

Benjamin in a 3 year old seal point siamese, neutered.

He talks incessantly. Had I known this when I first got him, I never
would have taken him (I was so naive!) now that I have had him for a
year I wouldn't dream of parting with him or his voice.

When I first got him (and did not love his talking, especially
during dinner with guests and at 3:00am) I tried to curb his speech
using a C.A.T. (spray bottle) and it didn't work.

He doesn't run around the house, he ZAPS across the house, often
slamming into the walls at the ends of the apartment. He attacks
the throw rugs with all the zeal of an owl for a mouse.

And yes, he cries when you first touch him or try to pick him up.
It DOES sound like he's saying "leave me be woman!", but he purrs
as soon as he's in my arms.

Sounds like a normal siamese to me. Ours is just 12 weeks old now, a
little male, with the energy of 100 kittens. Taco (siamese) talks
constantly, while eating, pooping, playing, chasing, etc.... First
two weeks we had him, we were going crazy, now we are used to it. The
older cats are now talking up a storm!!! Home is pretty noisey these
days, but I've really come to enjoy it.
