817.0. "Sherlock and Watson - An Adventure" by EDWIN::BURLEW (Purr is my favorite sound!) Wed Oct 07 1987 12:38

As mentioned in reply 4 to note 816, Sherlock has a Teddy Bear named
Watson. Why does Sherlock have a Teddy? Well, my husband and I
collect stuffed animals. When we first got Sherlock, he would steal
various members of our collection from the back of the sofa or chair.
So, to protect them we decided to get Sherlock his own teddy which
he could do anything with he pleased.

We mentioned this to a friend of ours who owns a small toy shop
in New London (New Hampshire) called Fun and Games. Maggie (the
owner) loves teddy bears and cats. So, she said bring him in and
let him choose his own teddy. So, one Saturday last Spring, we
took Sherlock to Fun and Games and showed him teddy after teddy.
When we showed him a small, all brown teddy by Gund he wrapped both
of his front legs around the teddy and would not let go. So, home
came the teddy. And, of course, we named it Watson (what else?)!

Sherlock loves Watson! He plays with him, wrestles with him, washes
him, and so on. The best event yet occurred one Sunday afternoon
last Spring. I was on the couch in the family room watching tv,
Sherlock was on the couch with me playing with Watson, and Tom (my
husband) was in the bathroom. Suddenly, Sherlock stood up, picked
up Watson by one of his legs, and jumped off the couch. Sherlock
looked around and trotted into the bathroom carrying Watson in his
mouth. He took Watson over to the cat pan and showed it to him.
Then, brought Watson back to the couch, set him down, and curled
up next to him and took a nap!

What a relief to know that Watson is now formally potty-trained!

A great story. I'm grinning from ear to ear. One thought. Have you
looked for the plant pot where Sherlock used to take your stuffed
animals? Maybe he hid it there.

817.9LOVED IT...AIMHI::OFFENWed Oct 14 1987 19:4222
I LOVED IT... Yes, I know I was shouting but I really did love the
story. Who says `Teddies' are just for humans anyway.

This story reminded me of something my dog, Keisha, did. We had
recently brought home a tiny calico kitten which was `adopted' by
our 5 year old cat (thank goodness). I guess Keisha was jealous
that she didn't have a `baby' too because one day she calmly went
into my bedroom and took a small white unicorn off my bed. Being
a white Samoyed, she took one that resembled her. She brought it
out to the family room and put it between her paws and proceeded
to clean it. She carried it from room to room for days and slept
    with it at night.

She has since out-grown the need for a `baby' because Deja (the
calico kitten) is all grown up and plays with Keisha herself.

Thank you for sharing an amusing story with us cat-lovers. I had
to answer the phone right after reading about the potty-training
    and couldn't stop smirking.

817.10Another Bear StorySQM::MURPHYIs it Friday yet?Thu Oct 15 1987 12:4716
About a week ago I purchased two of the Digital Bears on sale in
Health Services here at Spit Brook Rd. facility. One for my office
and the other I gave to my Mom (who is 80 years old and at one time
worked for DEC as a TAG). Since her stroke and 2 heart attacks
she's been confined more or less to my apt. She loved the gift
and decided to keep it on her bed during the day.

Well, last night it was so funny as my latest cat addition to the
family, D.P. Gremlin, got on the bed and curled right up with that
bear (nicknamed "Digi" by my Mom). D.P. put one of his big, double
paws up on Digi and snuggled in for his nap. We all got such a
kick out of it and I got some cute snapshots too. Can't resist
when one of the "kids" is hamming it up. (Now I know what to get
    him for Christmas this year.)

    at your facility???

Seriously: they are little teddy bears with DIGITAL T-shirts.

    	and they are CUTE!

I didn't know they were for sale. I had seen some that were
for distribution to customers at last year's DECUS.

    Re .last_two:

This goes _way_ back in Digital history. Many, many years ago,
when we introduced the PDP-8, not too many people knew about
minicomputers; to counter the intimidation the word "computer" evoked
in some people, Digital started advertising camopaigns about "approach-
ability" of the PDP-8. To emphasize this, included in the ad pictures
    were teddy bears.

Teddy bears pervaded a number of ads, and it got so when someone
bought a PDP-8, they asked where their teddy bear was. For a
(mercifully, short) while, we actually supplied a teddy bear with
    PDP-8 end-user systems.

I guess at DECUS, someone took up the Teddy bear theme again.

I'm starting to feel really deprived. Can someone ask the bear
dispenser if there's a way for folks in the field to buy one? Maybe
they can be sent thru the interoffice mail :-)

We still have bears...and only $8.00! The funds go to employee
activities here at ZK. If you want a bear or two, I will be glad
to send them off to you.

    I'm located at ZKO2-3/R56.

Just a side note to add: Some years ago, Digital had proposals
that went to customers with color photos (probley still do), but
one of the salesreps knew I loved cats and brought me a photo.
This photo has two black kittens on top of a 11/750 and a full grown
black cat on top of the 11/780. Mamma cat looking down onto the
two babies. I have it framed and in my office. I get a lot of
questions regarding the photo,"How did you get the cats into the
computer room? and How did you manage to get them to stay on top
    of the computers?"

Due to the overwhelming response (I was bear-ied in requests), I

Bears are currently flying off to Holland, California, and a few

The last time I looked they had several. I would offer to send
