4853.0. "WEIRD THINGS" by CANYON::WARKMEISTER () Tue Aug 13 1991 22:46

What are some weird things that your cat loves ... but
you wonder why they love it?

    Heather ...

... loves to smell, and roll in your stinky shoes after
    you've worn them all day.

... loves to run out into the garage while Mike works
on his race car inspecting, and smelling everything (car
    parts, oil, transmission fluid).

... loves to run into our walk in closet to smell Mike's
dirty, and car smelling laundry in the basket.

... loves to roll around in Mike's drivers suit after we
come home from racing that night. She is so content, and
    happy whenever she does this!

... loves to try eating the silk flower arrangement in the
guest bathroom (I'm going to start growing kitty greens to
    help fix this one).

... finds some way to spill her water bowl after I fill it
up!! She has to put her paws in that water!!

... runs around the house like crazy, goes behind the tv,
and proceeds to pull the tv plug out of the wall!

... oh well ... enough for now ... please share your funny
    stories ... thanks.

Kiner...Loves to answer the telephone when it rings.

Smokia...Loves to drink out of the sink every time I run the water.

...Loves to poop in the litter box every time I'm in the process
             of cleaning in out.

4853.2yes, mine are wierd too!MCIS2::HUSSIANBut my cats *ARE* my kids!!Wed Aug 14 1991 12:0425
Callie takes commands like a dog. She comes when called, sits & stays
when told & when she's acting up, if you say, "Be Nice!" she will.

In the morning, she likes to try & get out (I think she's trying to
make me late for work! ;*)) when I go to leave. I tell her to STAY
and she does. Then affter I get out the door, she runs to the window to
"meow goodbye". It's ***SO*** cute! My neighbors think I'm the wierd
one, but I can't ignore all of that love & devotion...I stand in the
street saying, "Good bye my little baby! Mommie loves you! You sweet
    little baby!! Bye..."

Both of my girls think I keep them around for the purpose of taking
the "goodies" that they produce out of the litter box!! They watch my
every move, saying to themselves, "What's she doing w/ our poop?!"
then as I carry it to the trash, Tabitha tries to stop me!! She runs
over there like she's mad & tries to look in (but it's too tall for
her to see into!). Meanwhile, Callie sits patiently waiting for me to
put the filler into the box. As soon as I start, she gets in & squats
she won't **DO** anything till I pick the box up to move it to it's
normal spot tho. As soon as I pick it up, she starts her "business"
and this is WHILE I'M CARRYING THE BOX!!!

Strange cats? What cats aren't strange!!?? ;*)

4853.3My kitty loves showersTOOK::DUGALLisaWed Aug 14 1991 13:5811
Tasha, my 3 month old baby, loves the shower. She will jump in after I
get in, test the water temp (being real careful not to get her head wet -- she
hates that), and then she sits over the drain. When the tub fills up to her
satisfaction, she chases all the soap bubbles round the tub.

Nothing like the feeling of wet kitty hair around your ankles when you are
drying off. :-)

Pumpkin loves to lick my face if I've just put Sea-Breeze on. (yes, I
    stop her)

Smelly shoes and socks are a favorite to roll around on and get wild.
Then there's the Bounce box (laundry sheets). The smell drives her
wild. If I let her she'd lay on top of the sheets all day, rubbing her
    face in it.

And there's nothing like having fresh laundry on the bed and a cat in
the middle of it. She thinks its HERS.

The closet is fun to sneak around in too.

   T.K.

... also loves to rub his face in smelly shoes

... loves to fetch beer caps

... loves to drop his beer caps in smelly shoes and then try to fish
       them out

... loves to sit in front of his water bowl and drink with his paw
(dip, lick, dip, lick) ... I call him Mork

... loves to rub his head in my husbands hand while he is sleeping
(I keep my hands hidden so I can get some rest)

... loves to run out into the apartment hallway every time the door
is opened. I shut him out once, then opened the door a minute
later and he came flying back in... guess it wasn't as fun as he
       expected.

... LOVES Pounce and Bonkers ... he quacks like a duck whenever I
have the box (those little chirrupy noises are sooo cute)

... loves to open cabinets, closets, drawers, etc. to investigate
(however, if they are left open he will not bother)

... LOVES to be brushed ... he prefers you to hold the brush and
he will rub against it so he gets it exactly where he wants it

  Bandit

... LOVES to eat (he weighs 19 lbs)

   ... LOVES to sleep

... LOVES to get his belly rubbed

... loves to chew plastic bags (they taste sweet)

Can you tell which one is the active one? I may actually enjoy T.K. more
but I'm glad I only have one of him! Its nice to have two cats so
  dramatically different.

My Sneakers loves the smell of Ben Gay of all things!! If I have
it on for some minor ache or pain, he actually tries to lick it off!!
(yucko!!) Don't know the attraction there.

Pretzel loves to open the cabinet under my sink when he's playing
hide and seek with the other cats. Too bad he hasn't learned to
    close it when he's done!!

precious - collapses everytime I pet her....it's like she loses
all control in her hind end

princy - sits in front of me and meows when SHE wants to play
           - runs to toilet when I'm cleaning out litter box to watch
               her poops float around

pookie - sits on anything that I'm trying to do...I mean ANYTHING!
           - trys to play with her poops in the toilet before I get to
               flush them
           - sleeps in the strainer on top of my fridge

what strange creatures they are....But they sure do keep me company.

4853.10Latka and SimkaVAXWRK::DUMASWow, too late, we're there.Wed Aug 14 1991 20:1029
Miss Simka Louise:

Simka follows ants. In our recent ant invasion, she has trailed
and pointed ("Look, Mom! It moves!") to her heart's content.

She licks photographs and does spectacular leaps when chasing moths.

She sleeps back half in the kitty tree, front half on the window sill,
	belly over space.

She always shares Dad's bag of tortilla chips (not the cheese flavored,
	thanks, make mine the jalapeno).

Latka:

Latka, of all things, has a body lotion fetish. I am NOT going into
	more detail !

He removes all the little white caps from doorstops (thwooong!
thwoong! at 5 AM) and leaves them mid-floor just to let me know
he's done it again. Silly me, I periodically lose my mind and
put them all back, and the game begins all over ...

I have an antique quilt draped over a quilt stand in front of a
window - the perfect nap spot, in Latka's opinion, as his (portly)
body slowly disappears when the quilt sinks down between the bars
	of the stand...

STiTcH: Walks towards you on his hind legs when you hold your hand out
to him - he then, while standing on his hinnies, rubs his head into the
palm of your hand doing a little buck.

Takes his dry food out of the dish one at a time - drops it on the
    floor and then eats it.

Runs off with asparagus (thank god they are out of season now)

Pippin: Likes you to blow on her fur and while your doing this she
trills and just keeps rolling over - likes to play peek-a-boo - when
you show your face from the other side of the door/wall - she yells at
you and rolls on to her back.

Gino: Loves ants as well - he stomps on them and does a little dance.
He runs in terror if one drop of water hits him - takes off looking
over his shoulders like the "fugitive". Has wonderful conversations
with me in that very special Siamese voice and what's strange is that
I'm beginng to understand and speak cat talk to him.

Oh well, walk with the lame and you learn how to limp.

Well, I could probably write a book here but I'll limit myself....

Bumpy LOVES the vibrator. There's nothing she likes better than
to be massaged. She purrs and drools.

Angel also loves bottlecaps and plays fetch with them.

Tiffany loves Jack's socks - clean or dirty. She's taken to stealing
them when I'm trying to sort laundry.

Rusty (DLH) - Will remove one piece of dry catfood from the
dish and play shuffleboard in the kitchen with it.
Loves to be carried around draped across your
shoulders and/or hanging down your back. (He did
this to me at the cat show Sat.!) Hangs upside
down through the hole in the cat scratching tree.

Pepper (DSH) - Annoys you in the morning until he gets the pat
on the head he wants.....and then does a vanishing
act, never to be seen again until he needs his next
                   "fix".

Casey (Korat)- This cat has no bones. (only kidding! ;-)) He's like
a large, squishy marshmellow that you can mold into
any shape/position. If he's sitting in your lap,
and you move, he just kinda slides off, rather than
digging in like most cats do. He loves to play tag
and catch-me-if-you-can with me. He will fetch,
and does these amazing jumps in the air if you
                   play keep away with him.

B.K. (Korat) - Has a fetish for laundry baskets. Insists that he
be carried up or down the stairs if he spots the
basket in your hands. Also loves to play tag and
                   cmiyc, and keep away.

Moochie (DSH/barncat) - Races to beat you to the door of the barn.
When I fed her on the backporch, she would
greet me at the barn, wait patiently until
I was done, and then would race me to the
door. Now she dines in the barn, and meets
me halfway up the hill to walk me to the
                            barn door.

Well Lynne, your Korats sounds like mine! Here's the weird
things mine to:

Shanti (DSH) - When I open my armoire, she jumps up on a shelf,
burys herself in the clothes, never to be seen again! Only
when I hear a faint "meow" is when I know she's there! Also,
in the mornings she has to have her "finger" fix -- she
purrs loudly while suckling on fingers!

Charlie (DSH) - Charlie opens all the cabinets in the kitchen,
finds a nice spot, and sleeps. He also likes to lie on the
couch, put both paws over his head -- crossed!

Gracie (Korat) - Gracie likes to play with this "feather - bird
looking" toy I bought, doing 2-1/2 triple gainers (the other
2 cats give her ratings of 1 to 10). Right now, she curls
up in a ball on my lap, sticks her head under her back
leg, then covers what's left of her head with her paws!

4853.194 month old BanditIAMOK::SPAREFri Aug 16 1991 19:3220
My four month old Bandit loves to:

    - sit next to the sink and watch people shave

    - chase ants

    - bite shoes, but only when they're on your feet. He could care
less about a pair of sneakers laying on the floor, but put a foot
inside and he's all over them.

    - bite noses. He has a habit of staring at people for the longest
time and then pouncing at their nose and gently biting it.

    - and lastly, little Bandit loves to sit in front of the tv and
attempt to bite the noses of of everyone on the screen.

lemme see -

The Jersey Flash (aka Mandycat, Amanda, The Javanese Flash) likes to:

follow me down the hall, grousing about life in general....she also likes
to open kitchen cabinet doors and SLAM them shut (we now are child-proofed),
sleep with her head hanging down through the hole in the crows nest of the
cat tree; sleep on the crows nest with her belly hanging down through the
hole; splash in the water with her paw - she loves watching the water sail
high in the air; lurk behind furniture only to leap out and tackle an
unsuspecting cat walking by...they both go rolling across the room to the
tune of outraged cat dignity; sleep on my shoulder during the winter when it
is cold; drag all her cat toys down the hall and into her assigned "safe
corner"....she doesn't share with just anyone.

Dilly (aka Delia, Ondile, blue-nose, teddy-bear) likes to:

sleep on my shoulder while I sit on the couch and read; sleep with her paws
wrapped in my hair; nip toes that move at night; nip nose if I move around
too much; rest her head on Sadie-the-dog when she takes a rest from play
in the evening; nip Sadie's tail (they had a discussion about that and now
she doesn't nip anymore, but she want to); lay on her back under my legs
when I'm sitting down on the couch and tickle my calves with her furry little
paws; get into things with The Jersey Flash, her "bad influence"; unpack
carefully packed boxes of underwear - strewing her "accomplishments" all over
the house; look so adorable that "Mom" can't do anything about it.

Hannah (aka Missy Hannah, blue-eyes, pudge) likes to:

sleep on the window-sill with her paws dangling down the side - looks like a
dead cat; take showers with me if I let her - I don't because it takes too
long to dry her; get her "hair dried" when I dry my own in the morning; keep
the riff raff out of "our" bathroom - she stands guard at the door and "tells"
people to stay away; follow me down the hall grousing about life in general;
sleep on my back when I sleep on my stomach during the winter - nice warm
feeling for both of us; Clear shelves of books and whatnot to make nice
napping places.

Sam (aka Samson, the old gentleman) likes to:

do as little as possible and do it with class when you must move...he is
not into aerobic activity....or daytime...but he does tolerate the "kids"
sleeping on and around him in his "nest" behind the lounge chair.

Everyone morning Towncat and Surrey greet me at the bedroom door,
follow me into the bathroom and then Townie climbs into the back of the
tub while I shower and Surrey curls up in my nightshirt and takes a
nap. When the shower is over, they switch places, Townie curls up in the
nightshirt while Surrey licks the water droplets off my legs.

The weird thing is that in a house of 15+ cats, these two manage to be
the only two that get into the bathroom with me every morning, and they
follow this same routine each day.

Tilly disapproves of our dog, Annie. Whenever Annie starts barking,
Tilly comes running from where ever she was and scolds the dog
verbally. Gets to be a zoo at our house, the dog going "woof, woof,
woof" and a little cream and white cat sitting next to her scowling and
    saying "rrrreeeeeooooooorrrr, rrrreeeeeooooooorrrrr".

4853.23The Fab FourWR1FOR::RUSSELLPE_STFri Aug 16 1991 22:5329
Marnie - Scottish Fold. Likes to take a piece of dry food out of the
bowl and play hockey with it, kill it and then eat it. Occasionally,
when he's batting it around, it stops where Lizette is sitting, and she
eats it. Marnie looks so surprised. (OK, Nancy?) He appears each
morning to race me to the bathroom and sit on my lap. He also like to
stretch out on the kitchen table. (We never eat there, it's too full of
mail and papers). Marnie is also the "snoopervisor" in the morning when
Bob is making breakfast. Bob says that Marnie watches so intently,
that one day he'll let Marnie do it. ;-)

The Birmans like to chew on my gold bracelets (while I'm wearing them.)
    They have good taste.
Misha - loves the kitty tease toys (fishing type). He chatters so, and
does some amazing leaps, living up to his namesake.

Lizette is such a graceful little lady, she doesn't do anything weird.

Misty - DSH - has her set routine with me. Every night when I go to
bed, she comes up and curls around my head, nuzzles my face and hair,
pats me with her paw, kneads a little, and usually stays there til I
fall asleep. She is an incredible love, so sweet and intelligent, too.
She plays fetch, but prefers it when she is lying down and I throw it
to her and she catches it (still lying down) and bats it back to me.
She is also a good conversationalist, and we have some interesting
    chats.

This was a new one - the other night Richard was having an Alka

table to investigate the fizzzing noise - poked their head into the
glass (one at a time of course) - the fizzing must have hit them in the
face and they ran off scared to death - Stitch's fur was actually on
end - Pippin BACKED away from the table growling and of course Gino

ah yes, the sinister fizzy thing! Missy Hannah will talk to my diet raspberry
ginger ale when I set it down near her...she takes offense at all that noise,
I think. A friend has a theory that cats think fizzy drinks are HISSING at
them...and they react accordingly. Possible, I guess.
4853.28Speaking of water...ASDG::ANDERSONThu Aug 22 1991 20:166
    Snoopy always has to check out the toilet after someone flushes it;
she'll rush into the bathroom to watch the swirling water. Once she
managed to fall in on the way to the bathroom sink (she was going to
help Curtis shave, and he had left the toilet the way men often do.)

last night, Dilly, my Birman showed me her favorite water trick...she walked
up to my ice-water filled glass, stuck her nose in the glass to steal a drink,
but it was too deep..
she then put her whole leg in the glass....thereby displacing enough ice water
to cover the endtable in a puddle. She removed her soaking wet front leg,
sat down in the puddle of ice water, thereby soaking her bottom, and proceeded
to lick her leg and foot - in an effort, I must presume, to get a drink. It
was, from her view point successful - she got a drink. She then trotted off
down the hall, tail dripping water as she went - I presume to dry off a little.
I sat there viewing the ruination of a box of kleenex and a soaking wet
knit coaster...from my viewpoint it wasn't a complete success.

Oh, I left out B.K.'s water fetish......

He will wade in the bathtub while it's draining, and
also will wade if the basement floods. Casey & B.K. also
like to drink from the bathroom faucet, if you leave it on
    a slow trickle....
If I soak my feet in a footbath, Casey will stick a front
leg into it to feel around the bottom for ????? And, they
both also like to play with the icecubes floating in your drink.

I almost forgot - big mountains of bubbles in the bath - they just love
to sit there at stare at them - then slowly venture up to the rim of
the tub to sniff, poke and listen - they seem totally transfixed by the
whole procedure - then when you drain the water out and some of the
suds remain on the bottom they go in to get a closer look - each having
their seperate reactions to these mysterious apperations that shrink
and disappear before your very eyes!

Sometimes my silly Tabitha will come up to you while you're asleep &
put her nose right up to yours! She doesn't touch your face, but does
this telepathic wake up call. Ya know? Like when you can just FEEL
someone looking at you? so when you open your eyes, theres a sweet
little fur-face right there! It's strange the way she does it, but
it's so funny when she finally gets you to open your eyes! then she
    runs away. Weird cat.

    Misha:
Will not let anyone go to the bathroom unescorted. Difficult
to explain to guests.....Insists on talking to you the entire time
       as well... :-)

75% of the time is lazy enough to miaow without letting any of
       the noise out.

Finds my roommate's smelly sneakers irrisistible.

Will stand on the edge of the couch and beg you to scratch his ears,
and when you do, he promptly loses his balance and falls off the couch.

Will come and find my roommate (and only my roommate, I evidently
don't listen well...) and tell him if the food in his food dish is
       (a) gone, (b) nearly gone (c) incredibly close to being nearly
gone (d) stale (e) the same kind he had yesterday.

    Mips:
Eats her food with her paw, outside the bowl, one piece at a time.
Scoop, place, eat, scoop, place, eat......

Sits on the stool across the counter in the kitchen while I'm
dishing out food, as if I'm supposed to give her a plate as well.

Rubs up against every other cat in the house to the point of
annoyance. If you met this cat at a convention, she would have
a name tag that said, "HI! I'm Mips!", she would shake your
hand like an elephant and never leave you alone again for the
       duration.

    Belle:
Call her name and she'll look at you and start "making bread" from
       across the room.

Teases Misha mercilessly and then runs to me when he finally
       chases her around the house.

    Dream:
In true Siamese fashion, she loves having her back patted...HARD.

If you don't pat her hard enough she bites your ankles.

"Kills" every stuffed "mousey" in the house and lays
them lovingly at my feet. Sincerely kills. I've been in the
living room and seen ole mousey flying out of the kitchen
in a seemingly self-propelled fashion only to see Dream appear
five minutes later, satisfied that she had lobbed it far enough
       to knock it senseless.

Swats Misha when he complains too much about the food.

Cats can produce sound above the human range of hearing. Perhaps
he IS making sound and you just can't hear it.

I have a music box from Sanfransisco Music Box co. It's a satin & china
harlequin clown. It's very beautiful. It USED to be mine, but that was
before Tabitha decided it was hers. SHE LOVES the music it makes. She's
never harmed it in any way. She just asks that you play it for her so
she can lay there w/ her paws rested on it & listen. When it's done
playing she stands up & looks at you as if she's saying, "Play it
again, Sam!" so we wind it up for her, over & over again. I think it's
the sweetest thing, but it's weird at the same time...she really
    dislikes Aretha Franklin! ;*( ;*)

Callie runs around w/ the tie belt to my bathrobe in her mouth! She
falls down on the string because she's tripping over it! Either that,
or Tabitha is following her around chasing the string as she drags it!
Too funny at 6:00 in the morning! :*)

Callie has her own little way of laughing at me! This morning when she
pulled her usual stunt of running out the door into the hall, just to
make me late for work, I went after her. The apartment downstairs is
vacant & is being worked on. The door was open, so Callie just went on
in! I felt like I was invading the home even tho nobody lives there,
so I just wanted to get her & get out! Well, I walked into the room
where she ran & she was standing all hunched up in the corner, purring
so LOUD that her tail was shaking & pionting straight up into the air!
It was **SO** obvious that she thought this was just a regualr RIOT!
She's so silly! I couldn't stop laughing while I was trying to catch
her & carry her up the stairs!!!

Benson....
. Runs to the refrigerator whenever we open it, and just stands there, peering
   in.
. Jumps 2 feet straight up into the air, for no apparent reason.
. We hang a dish towel on the handle of our stove. Benson loves to pull the
dish towel off with his teeth, and proceed to drag it to some random part
   of the house.
. Loves to try and eat my hair at 4:00 AM.
 . Plays chase with us.
. Loves watching the toilet being flushed.
. Comes into the bathroom when I'm taking a shower, and howls with all his
   might.

Becky is always waiting outside the bathroom door when one of us takes
a shower. She then goes into the far corner of the shower and sits
(thereby getting a wet seat) and stares at the drain. Randy and I keep
asking her if she is guarding us against the "drain monster". She will
sometimes then go to "daddy" (Randy) and rub her wet tail on him.

If I can't find Becky anywhere else, I can usually find her in the
    shower. Strange cat.
