4483.0. "GOODBYE TABS" by TYGON::WILDE (why am I not yet a dragon?) Mon Mar 25 1991 18:22

			GOODBYE TO AN OLD FRIEND

This weekend, I made that final trip to the vet for Tabbitha, our apple-headed
siamese lady. She was 17 years old, and save for a bout of kitty flu that I
fought off in December, she has been a very robust cat until this last week.
Her kidneys failed us in the end, they just quietly stopped proper function
and she began to rapidly go down hill. The initial symptoms looked like a
very bad bladder infection, and we did the whole battery of tests one does
on an older cat, only to find the kidney function almost completely gone.

I finally sat Marge down and had the talk we both didn't want - the one that
reminded us that trying to hold on to her was for US, not for Tabitha...the
talk that ended, as was necessary, with the decision to let her spirit fly
free of her tired, old body. It was late at night when we came to the
decision, so we wrapped her up in a blanket and drove to the emergency
clinic in S. San Jose, California for the service. I cannot begin to tell
you how lucky we are to have these people in this clinic....I have never
seen gentler treatment in my life. They were so tender with our precious
cat, and so kind to us, that they made this terrible, but necessary,
experience not only tolerable, but in some way I cannot explain,
life-affirming. I highly recommend to you all in San Jose, Ca. to use the
emergency clinic on Thornwood Ave. if you are in need of help late at night...
they have a beacon of support shining for you.

Tabs will be missed in a thousand ways, but she will also be remembered for
17 years of delightful companionship, humor, and charm...she lived for 17
years. She died for less than a minute. We will remember the living.

I know exactly how you are feeling...I went through an identical
scenario with my "special girl" Dachshund, "Ruby", in February...once
the failing began it was astounding to see the total
deterioration...and she also had total kidney failure.

I still miss her, and probably will always...but I also remember the
GREAT times we had..and how she really trusted and loved with no
conditions attached.. I can still see her looking at me with those big,
    brown eyes..

So remember her..remember the good and the love you gave to each
other...and try to ease the loss and hurt...and TIME will help you do
    that...

Dian, I'm so sorry. I know how hard that decision, and that trip, is!
I'm still crying for my Gypsy. Maybe they are playing together now, I
have to think they are in a better place, with no pain. Your obvious
love for her led to a beautiful tribute.

I too lost my Siamese, Ting-Ling to kidney failure after 17 years.
Your account of Tabitha brought back so much. I sit here with tears in
my eyes, thinking back to that day - but what you said is so true - all
those years of living and one minute to die - I too will remember the
    living.

I am so sorry for your loss - be strong.

We are sad for you - to have to say good-bye to a loving member of your
    family.

As time goes by the sadness will fade and you'll have 17 years of
memories to cherish and reflect on. The tears will dry and when
you think of her you'll smile with warmth in your heart. I had a
beloved Siamese 'Benji' for 21 years so I know the effect they
    have on you.

Our sympathy to all of you and what a beautiful tribute ... it brought
    tears to my eyes.

John McDonough asked if I would post this reply for him.....

   **********************************************************************

"Where to Bury a Dog" was written in September of 1925 by Ben Hur Lamp-
man, a journalist and sportsman. It has been blatantly plagiarized and
re-focussed around a Cat...because the principle is the same...

                          Where to Bury a Cat

We would say that there are various places in which a Cat may be
buried. We are thinking particularly now of a Kitty who, so far as we are
aware, never entertained a mean or an unworthy thought. This Cat is buried
beneath a cherry tree, under four feet of garden loam, and at its proper
season the cherry strews petals on the green lawn of his or her grave.
Beneath such trees, such shrubs, she dozed in the drowsy summer, or gnawed
at a fragrant spear of catnip, or flattened to stalk some intrusive bird,
or pounced in joy upon some unsuspecting leaf, or chased a pretty butterfly.
These are good places, in life or in death. Yet it is a small matter.
For if the Cat be well remembered, if sometimes she/he leaps through your
dreams...actual as in life, eyes sparkling, laughing, begging, it matters
not at all where that Cat sleeps. On a hill where the wind is unrebuked,
and the trees are roaring, or beside a stream she knew in kittenhood,
where she stalked ferocious frogs and grasshoppers, or somewhere in the
flatness of a pastureland, where most exhilerating cattle graze. It is all
one to the Cat, and all one to you, and nothing is gained, and nothing lost -
if memory lives.
But there is one best place to bury a Cat.......
If you bury her in this spot, she will come to you when you
call - come to you over the grim, dim frontiers of death, and down
well-remembered path, and to your lap again. And though you call a
dozen living cats to lap, they shall not growl nor hiss at her, nor
resent her coming, for she belongs there.
People may scoff at you, who see no lightest blade of grass bent
by her footfall, who hear no soft "mrrroow?", people who may never REALLY
have had a Cat.. Smile at them, for you shall know something that is
hidden from them, and which is well worth the knowing....That the ONE
best place to bury a Cat is in the heart of it's master.....

what a lovely essay. It says exactly what needs to be said and I will take
it home to Marge this evening. she needs to be reminded of this right now.

   Dian,

Thank you for being able to share how you reached the decision to let
your dear friend Tabs go in peace. What a beautiful tribute! May the
pleasure you're deriving from those little successes with Sadie help
you through this time of loss.
