4401.0. "A CAT'S PRAYER" by SQM::DECLAMECY () Tue Feb 19 1991 16:51

    Now hear this! You may live in this dwelling with me, but keep in mind
    your sole purpose for existing is to care for me. I pray God keeps you
    able to do so.

    Feed me well and promptly, so that I may then find a quiet place to lie
    down and stare at you. If that place happens to be on top of the
    television set do not keep trying to dislodge me even though my tail
    is hanging in the middle of the picture.

    I expect full run of the premises, including the kitchen table. I
    sniff your food only to see if I would prefer it to mine. Brush me
    twice a week. Pet me as often as you wish, but I can do without the
    idiotic statements you utter as you do so.

    When I bump my head against your leg or cheek, it means I accept you as
    part of my environment. Keep in mind that if I thought the lady next
    door would feed me better, I'd be out of here in a minute. If you're
    looking for loyalty, get a dog.

    I just called up my husband to read this "cat prayer" to him. He
    laughed a lot but said, whoever wrote this never met Misty. She is
    loyal and alway (almost) comes when I call her. But she does always check
    out our food and always wants a taste, just to make sure it's OK. And
    true she doen't like to be dislodged from wherever she sitting. I
    guess in a lot of ways she is like that cat. I'm glad I now know my
    purpose in life. ;-)

4401.2"The Cat's Prayer"AYOV27::TWASONWed Feb 20 1991 06:1148
    This is re-printed without permission from "Glorious Cats" - The
    Paintings of Lesley Anne Ivory accompanied by extracts, poems etc by
    many famous cat lovers.

    This is a Cat that sleeps at night,
    That takes delight
    In visions bright,
    And not a vagrant that creeps at night
    On box-cars by the river,
    This is a sleepy cat to purr
    And rarely stir
    Its shining fur;
    This is a cat whose softest purr
    Means salmon, steaks and liver.

    That is a cat respectable,
    Connectable,
    With selectable
    Feline families respectable,
    Whose names would make you quiver.
    That is a cat of piety,
    Not satiety,
    But sobriety.
    Its very purr is of piety
    And thanks to its Feline Giver.

    And this how it prays:

    'Ancient of days
    With whiskers torrendous,
    Hark to our praise,
    Lick and defend us.
    Lo, how we bring to Thee,
    Sweet breasts of mouses;
    Hark how we sing to Thee,
    Filling all houses
    With ardent miaouses,
    Until it arouses
    All mankind to battery.
    Thou of the golden paws,
    Thou of the silver claws,
    Thy tail is the comets' cause,
    King of all cattery!'

    Can anyone direct me to a book of poems about cats. I know that
    there is a note in here somewhere about all the literature on cats
    but I'd like an abbreviated list of just poems and possibly( i know
    i'm being pushy;) ) where to find them?
