4395.0. "Poor Pookie ..." by XNOGOV::LISA (Give quiche a chance) Mon Feb 18 1991 11:55

    :-(

We found a *HUGE* abscess at the base of Pookies tail on Friday night.
She was in so much pain. We took her to the vet first thing on
Saturday. Rolf had been "helping" her to clean her wound during the
night and was very sick in the morning. Pookie was also sick. Off we
went to the vet and when she had clipped some of the fur away you could
see exactly what was there. Her whole tail was distorted and swollen
and she cried out with pain as the vet treated her. The vet gave Pookie
a jab and gave us some pills. We took home a very unhappy cat.

The whole house was filled with a disgusting smell for the w/e.My parents
    were staying. My parents are not great cat fans :-}

I just thought I'd put this in as a warning - don't let infection get
out of hand. We should have spotted it earlier - I have spent the
weekend feeling very guilty and Pookie has been in a lot of pain. I
took her back to the vet this morning and it seems to be getting
    better.

    Poor Pookie.

    Lisa plus PR&F.

I agree with you Lisa about feeling guilty. A couple of months
ago Barkley had a huge abscess on his tail and the poor guy was
so cranky and in alot of pain. It cleared up real fast once
    the Vet treated it.

    Poor Pookie!!

Poor Pookie! Please give her a hug for me (when she feels up to
it, that is ;-) ). Hope she gets well soon!

    Hi Lisa!

Please don't feel too guilty about not noticing Pookie right away!
After having met you I know you care very much for your kitties.
Hopefully the recovery will be quick now that the vet has stepped in.
    Best to yours from mine!

    	Lisa,

I know how you feel. Brandi had taken off at one point
(i'm sure some of you remember this story) for a 2 week
period and when she came back she had this HUGE scab on
her back. The vet told us it was an abcess that had
burst. We never even noticed it. And it was in the same
spot that Pookie's is....right at the base of the tail.

Poor baby....give her a gentle hug for me =)

Poor Pookie. This reminds me of once when Pussycat had a huge
abscess that I hadn't noticed burst near his throat. The vet thought
he might have swallowed a pin perhaps.

Poor Pookie and poor Lisa. Don't feel too guilty, Lisa, cats are the hardest
critters to diagnose with a problem because they just don't show the pain
until it gets really bad. It happens to some of the most observant cat owners.

    Lisa,

You are a good mommy and shouldn't feel guilty. Pookie is going to
be fine. It will probably take you longer to shed the guilt than for
her to shed the pain. But give Pookie a hug from the Storm Troopers
    and their mommy.

    Lisa,

Give Pookie a tender hug from all of us. I hope she is feeling better.
Don't feel guilty, you are a very good "mum". I hope Rolf and Florence
    are also well.

    Poor Pookie - how miserable!

I agree that it's not easy to spot an abcess sometimes. Spike had one
behind his ear and, due to him being deliciously fluffy around there,
we simply didn't notice until it was quite large.
However, a couple of shots and some pills cleared it up fine.
Apparently around ears and the base of the tail are the most common
place for them...is this because this is where toms bite each other
most often when they're fighting? My vet suggested that it's an
infected cat bite that causes an abcess most often...

Thanks for all the get well messages! Pookie is well on the road to
recovery and none of them has been sick since Sunday! I just couldn't
believe how nasty it was cos I am so careful - well I thought I was
    anyway!
