4387.0. "Very very sick kitten" by CRUISE::NDC (Putiput Scottish Folds DTN:297-2313) Thu Feb 14 1991 11:03

I have a friend with a VERY sick kitty. He's not a feliner. He has
a 9 month old kitten with no coordination and a very high FIP titer.
The cat was at Tufts for about 5 days and they don't know for sure
what the problem is so they sent the kitten home with a poor prognosis.
My friend is giving the kitten lots of TLC, keeping it on a heating
pad and giving it anti-inflammatory and anti-biotic medication per
    advice of the vet.

THe kitten is still eating but will not attempt to get up at all.
He still has muscletone, just no coordination.

Needless to say, my friend is just devastated. This will be the
third pet he's lost in a short amount of time. To make it worse,
he has several other cats and another dog and who knows if or how
the illness of this one kitten will effect the others. Will they
    get sick too?

So please send all the good thoughts and prayers you can. If my
friend gives up I'm sure the kitten will too. No names are nec-
essary. I'm sure God will know who you mean. ;-)

    Thanks.

I called my friend last night to tell him that we're all praying
and to find out how the kitten is doing. He seemed to think that
the kitten is a bit better - and that perhaps the prayers and
positive thinking were helping. He said that before when he picked
the kitten up its head would just flop, now the kitten holds his
head up when he's picked up and looks around with more interest
    in its environment.

He is keeping the kitten separated from the other cats. He has
a screen door on his bedroom. Unfortunately at this point all
    have been exposed.

Keep up the good work guys and I"ll keep passing the encouragement
on to my friend. At this point I almost think its more important
to keep my friend thinking positive than anything else. If anyone
can pull this kitten through its him because only he can give this
    kitten that special LOVE.
      Thanks

4387.17its slow, but its improvementCRUISE::NDCPutiput Scottish Folds DTN:297-2313Tue Feb 19 1991 10:5116
I talked to my friend again last night. The kitten is still hanging
in there and continues to make progress at an excruciatingly slow
pace. We both agree, however, that as long as the kitten continues
to move in the right direction my friend will keep trying.

The kitten is showing much more interest in his surroundings and is
eating better. He's also trying to get to the catbox now rather than
just urinating on the 1/2 diaper that my friend was keeping under the
kitten's back end. He seems to have full control of his tail and some
of the muscles at the base of the tail. He's well hydrated (my friend
has been giving him lactated ringers twice/day) and my friend has
decreased the amount of additional fluids he's injecting because its
no longer necessary to give that much.

So keep up the prayers, they seem to be helping.

Well, you guys must be doing something right because this little
guy is still hanging in there and he's improving. Its been two
weeks now and he's able to sit up on his "elbows" and look around.
He also now attempts to get to the catbox and can balance more
easily when my friend holds him up.

His appetite is much improved and he doesn't require anywhere near
as much supplimental fluids as he did. ALso he seems to have more
sensation in his back legs. My friend has been giving the kitten
physical therapy every day and now when he grips the kitten's back
legs and stretches them out the kitten will give a strong pull and
pull them back in. This is a fairly new development.

So keep doing what your doing because its helping. This leads me
to question whether the diagnosis of FIP was correct. I don't think
    so.

BTW - the kitten's temp has been normal consistently for quite a while
    now.
My friend asked me to extend his gratitude to you for your support.

Thoughts and prayers will continue until this litten kitten
has the strength to start running around terrorizing everything

4387.28Torry's at peaceCRUISE::NDCPutiput Scottish Folds DTN:297-2313Wed Mar 13 1991 10:2436
Well, after so much effort and struggle, Torry passed away on Sunday
evening. My friend thinks that as a result of the limited diet he
was on (baby food, nutrical, "fluids") that his electrolites became
depleted. He had started giving Torry "pedialite" and the response
was good. He was showing much more movement and coordination.
Unfortunately by that time Torry hadn't had a bowel movement in
nine days. An enema didn't help. My friend feels that he died
    from a bowel obstruction.

He did not want an autopsy performed and burried Torry in the backyard
next to his beloved dog Sybil and cat Jiggs. He has lost all three of
    them within a year.

My friend is feeling very depressed right now and somewhat angry with
the veterinary profession. Tufts wouldn't deal with him after he
brought Torry home. They just kept referring him back to his own
vets and he feels that his own vets messed up by not picking up on
the electrolite deficiency. It was another breeder who suggested that
and judging from Torry's reaction to the pedialites, my friend feels
that the breeder was on the right track. It was just too little too
    late.

He also feels relatively sure that this was not FIP as Torry's temp
had been back to normal for quite a while and his symptoms did not
match what he was reading in the Cornell book and other books about
    FIP.

I don't think he'll ever know what was wrong with Torry. After so
long a battle he's just exhausted. He just kept saying how unfair
it was that of the nine months Torry was alive, he was sick for
4 of them. He never had a chance to live.

Torry's name has been added to the Silver Lining Memorial List.
He had a strong little spirit, much stronger than his little body.

lose Torry after such a tough fight. I'm sure your friend did
