5043.0. "Doggie Story - Happy ending" by WILLEE::MERRITT () Tue Nov 05 1991 11:45

I know this is the feline notesfile...but I just need to
share this story with some animal lovers because after a
real yucky weekend....I am all smiles today!!!

Last Saturday my sister and I were out shopping and saw
this poor little dog (part Keeshound) run out in the middle
of the road. We slammed on our brakes...and missed the dog..
but the car going in the other direction hit the dog pretty hard.
The guy did stop, we stopped, and another person stopped. There
were also two little boys...who saw the whole thing...and were
stricken with horror crying. We all raced towards the dog..who
was just lying on the side of the road not moving. I immediately
started yelling "let's get him to the vet"...and the guy who
hit him (was so nervous) he opened his truck to put the dog in
it. Well...that's all I needed...I started yelling "your not
putting this poor dog in the trunk". So my sister and I proceeded
to get the dog in our car. As we put the dog in the back seat...
he jumped up...ears back...looked confused...but started wagging
his tail. The two little boys were yelling "he's alive he's alive!!"
(just like E.T.) The poor man that hit the dog was so shaken we
gave him out telephone number and told him we were bringing him
to our vet and he could call us later.

We got to the vet office...and the dog actually walked in with
his tail wagging. I explained to the vet that the dog just got
hit...I had no idea who owned it...but I asked him to please
give the dog medical attention...and if need put it on my bill!
(they know us as the cat people...so they were surprised to see
us with a dog.) I also told them I would do all I could to find
the owners...or find the dog a new home.

I left the vet...heartbroken...and still wondering if the dog
was allright. I worried all night Saturday...and also Sunday.
I did receive a call from one of the little boys that had
saw the accident...and I told him the dog looked fine and
was going to have a full checkup. he said he thought he
knew who the owners were...so he was going to call them.

Well the great news is that I called the vet yesterday...and
the dog is fine. And more good news...we think we found the
owners and they are going down to identify the dog. The dog
did have a collar (no license) and a rope attached...so my guess
is that he got away! I asked the dog officer..who also manages
the Clinic...if she would question these folks to make sure they
are good owners...and ask why the dog didn't have a license.
And even more good news...the vet never charged my account
he just shook his head and said "I can't charge you for helping
this dog".

The dog officer promised to call me tonight to give me an
update. Keep your fingers crossed that these folks are the
owners...and that they are responsible people.

Sandy

ps..I was working on my husband and cats asking their opinion
of bringing a four legged little doggie home!!! Husband said
okay...I'll build a dog house...but boy the cats got nasty..
and said "enough's enough Mom".

Sandy, you're the greatest!! Not too many people would do what you did,
and you didn't even hit the poor thing! I think we have the nicest
    kindest people in this file!

Let us know how the pooch makes out!

I don't know...knowing all you guys...I think there are plenty
of folks in this file that would do the same thing or have done
    it in the past!!

But to be honest...I'm wondering what I would have done if that
had been a person and not an animal. I'm not sure I would have
    been that wonderful. Scarey huh!!!

    Sandy
5043.4It's the same, but different?MR4DEC::COLAIANNITue Nov 05 1991 15:059
    Sandy,

I'm sure if it had been a person, you would have at least called an
ambulance. I know I wouldn't try to move a person, but our poor furry
friends don't have that service available to them. They have to depend
on caring folks like you and the people in this file to help them out.
It doesn't make you any less caring. It's a very different scenario.

BOYOBOY.....YOu must have sorta dumb cats!! We have 12 dogs in our
house, 'n we have no trouble dominating them completely... Sometimes
one of us puts on a good ACT by running when one of the more exhuberant
young dogs wants to run, and we make it LOOK like he's chasing us, but
the bottm-line here is that we LOVE to have 12 larger critters to
    dominate...

Get a dog!! Your cat's 'l LOVE to control it!!

seen her at the Singapore lately.

.4 If it was a person...I probably would atleast have called
an ambulance. But history shows...I'm much more apt to
help any animal in need. (birds, mice, dogs, cats...etc)

.5 Okay JM....leave it to you to say get a dog!! I'm always
amazed at reading your stories of all your animals....and
what a happy household you have. But right now we own
a two family and I have seven cats and a bird...upstairs has
five cats and we feed two strays! God I feel overwhelmed at times!!
But...we all made the decision that if this dog does not
find his owner or a new home...we would not allow this little dog
to be put to sleep...and we would take him in. for some
reason he touched are heart...like you wouldn't beleive.

.6 JJ...my sister still works at Singapore...but she doesn't work
in the bar any more...just the restaurant!! (monday and friday
         nights)

I'll keep you all updated tomorrow!!!!

WHOA...My CATS made me put that in!!! ;-)

      Hey....think I DON'T know "that feeling"???? I certainly don't spend
my days going out LOOKING for dogs 'n cats to adopt....but like that
last little sad-eyed, lonely-looking, wet, dirty, abandoned
Beagle....when he looked up at me with those big, brown eyes, and when
I picked him up and he laid his little head on my shoulder and gave out
with this HUGE sigh.....I just ain't got it in me to turn 'em over to
an uncertain future when we have the room. Do WE feel overwhelmed at
times??? SURE we do!! It does get sort of 'strained' at times, but then
one comes up to us with the rear-half in motion and give a big lick, or
a cat comes along and ruuuubbbbs against one of us with her/his eyes
squinted all shut in happiness, and you can hear the purrrrring half a
block away...and it make it all worth it.......

glad to hear the doggie is ok! It's nice when these kinds of tales
have happy endings......but you sound like my household now. Would
you believe this past weekend we acquired a huge 10 month old Samoyed??

Sammy, the Samoyed is a beautiful dog, but he was being neglected
terribly by his former owner. The dude couldn't give a hoot about the
dog either way. I couldn't stand to see this poor dog treated so,
so.............of course much to my hubby's delight (he's been looking
for a dog) I agreed to take him in.

But of course, the cats have laid down strict guidelines. NO dog in
the house. NO dog out in their section of the yard when they want to
play. NO barking when they are trying to get their beauty sleep.
And NO dog smelling hands touch their fur. Well, we are trying to
abide by those rules. Queen Cleo is making sure we do. He's a really
terrific dog, though. I haven't had one since I was 14, so it's been
    a veeeery long time.

Denise and the gang of 11 cats and possibly....a dog?
5043.10WILLEE::MERRITTWed Nov 06 1991 10:4423
    yeah yeah...sniff sniff...yeah yeah...sniff sniff!!

The littel doggie in the base note was reunited with his
owner. The dog officer did question the folks...and came to
the conclusion that they were responsible owners and the dog
had broken loose. They will get a license now....

I'm really torn...part of me is so happy he found his owner...
and the other half of me is so sad that I won't see this little
guy again. Even though I was only with the dog for an hour..
there is a real strong attachement...and I'm sure it's because
    he needed me!!

Denise...please keep me posted on the dog/cat stories. Let us
know how introduction go....it should be fun!!!! I just need
this info...just in case I ever meet up with another dog in
need and decide to bring him home to the furballs!! Hopefully
they will all get along great like JM household!!!

    Denise,

A Samoyed is my dream dog!! As soon as we have a house I'm getting a
dog. Wish I could take in this baby but I know you will give him a
good home with your 11 cats :^).

    Good luck!
