4962.0. "Advice needed for wobbler" by DEMING::BITTICKS () Wed Sep 25 1991 10:56

I just adopted a "wobbly kitten" and could use some advice from anyone
with experience. Colonel Sebastian Moran is about 7 months old. He is a
silver tiger. He can go one or two steps and then falls over. He can
run at a very good clip, but has no control over what direction he is
heading in. Naturally, he falls in the litter pan and gets a bit messy
on occasion. He loathes baths (I guess the shelter bathed him alot) so
I've been trying Baby Wipes, which he will tolerate. {my St. Bernard
gets upset at that because he thinks the Baby Wipes are his ear
cleaners and doesn't want the kitty to use them all up}. Also, he falls
and knocks the food and water box all over. I'm using heavy mugs in a
cardboard box to feed him. They don't tip over, but they "travel" alot
as there isn't a corner I can put them in.

I was wondering about a covered litter pan, but as he falls so much,
might it not tend to tip over? I had a brain damaged can for 6 years
before Sebastian, but he didn't fall half as much, so I didn't have
    these problems.

Sebastian has very poor depth perception, so he will go to play with a
toy "here" that is really over "there". He has a wonderful time anyway,
but he does get a little skittish about sudden movement near him.
Anyone have any experience with that?

Basically, Sebastian is a very loving kitty who is fitting in with me
and my two dogs very well. He purrs so loudly you can hear him from
several feet away. I want to make him as comfortable as possible and
rule out any dangers. Any advice from someone with wobbly experience
    would be appreciated!

Has Sebastian seen a vet? It isn't normal for a cat to continually
fall down, especially at 7 months of age. He could have a neurological
    problem, or an eye disorder.

Your first step should be the vet for a complete physical.

4962.2falling down IS normal!DEMING::BITTICKSWed Sep 25 1991 14:3513
I should have explained. Sebastian is cerebral hypoplasic. It means he
has the feline equivalent of cerebral palsey. His mother had distemper
which often causes this. The falling down is "expected" of him. I'm
just trying to make life a little easier for everyone. To Sebastian,
falling down IS normal. He can't understand why the dogs don't do it
too! I was looking for a wobbly kitten as my house isn't suited to a
cat who can jump. Having had a handicapped cat for 6 years, I wanted
another. Sebastian is much worse than James T. was, so I thought I'd
seek a little advice. He did go visit the vet who pronounced him very
fit and completely adorable. She held him till he fell asleep and put
him down very gently so she could attend to other patients. Sebastian
woke up immediately and told her off loundly for putting him down.

I don't have any answers for you but just had to reply to this.

I think you are a superbly wonderful person. To have the patience to
take care of a brain-damaged kitty for 6 years and than to now have
Sebastian..... WOW !!!!! I don't know if I would have the patience
or courage to do what you are doing.

    God bless you and Sebastian

Lucky Sebastian and you. I don't know about the covered litter pan --
maybe he would have trouble getting out of it?

Perhaps his coordination will improve a bit with age. I have a
cousin with CP and I know her motor skills improved as she got
    older.
      You're wonderful!!!

4962.6Update on wobblerDEMING::BITTICKSTue Oct 01 1991 14:0718
Just an update on how Sebastian is doing. I got a covered litter pan,
which is working out very well. He seems to be doing better on keeping
himself clean. He was chewing on an electric cord last night, so I
yelled "no" and bopped him on the nose. He raced off and tried to dig
his way under the St.Bernard, who gave me a very nasty look. When I eat
dinner I now have the Saint, the afghan-cross and Sebastian all staring
at me and demanding their share. We had nacho chips last night, which
the dogs love. Sebastian demanded his fair share. I gave him a corner
of one and he sniffed it for a while and then yowled "No, really, what
are you eating?" He decided the corn was a ping-pong ball substitute.
The hamburger he knew what to do with. The only problem is that it
takes him longer to eat as he has to balance himself and concentrate on
getting the food. I have to be sure the dogs don't swipe his treat. He
does get his "revenge" tho, last night he tried to make of with the
Saint's cookie - a large size dog biscuit. Didn't get very far with it
before he decided it wasn't worth the effort. Hammy was much relieved.

Thanks for all your support, on line and off!

If Sebastian makes a habit out of chewing on electrical cords, you
may want to try a product like Bitter Apple. Spray it on the cord
and it is supposed to smell or taste bad enough to keep them from
chewing whatever you spray it on.

I've also heard that tobasco sauce works to discourage chewing.
I've never tried it myself tho.
