4889.0. "Sad story w/happy ending (pls pass the tissues!)" by BOOVX2::MANDILE (Her Royal Highness) Thu Aug 29 1991 12:03

Lucy - She is a tiger spayed female - and a very brave lady...

Her story....Lucy was left sitting on the steps of her home
by her owners when they moved in Nov. The shelter rec'd a call
in March that there was a cat that was looking very "bad" and
would they come get it? The shelter was full, so they told the
person they couldn't. Two weeks later, the person called again.
"The cat is really looking bad, you had better come get her"
When the person was asked "Have you been feeding it?" The response
was, "Feeding it?" (said in a tone of; Gee no, why would I do
that?) Lucy had been living off the single dog biscuit the mailperson
left her 6 days a week, from Nov to March! She waited on those steps,
all that time....when brought to the shelter, she was near death.
She was nothing but skin stretched over bone, with double pneumonia
and barely able to move.....At the vets, she was aged at approx 13
and euthanasia was discussed. But, during the whole time, Lucy
purred.....so, they gave her a chance. She is doing *just* ok now, and
after 4 months of intensive care, she has improved a bit. She is still
very thin, and is possibly not long for this world, but, she will have
the food, shelter and love needed until she passes on.

There is truly something special about cats like Lucy!! They
are very strong survivors...and take a special place in my
heart. I hope and pray that Lucy can continue to fight this battle
...and find a wonderful home which she deserves so much!! My little
Dewey had a very sad beginning of life....but am very happy
to say he is grown into a beautiful big happy cat and I just spoil
    this little guy rotten!!!

Please give Lucy extra hugs and kisses from all of us..and please
    keep us posted.

    Lynne,

Is there any way the previous owners/renters of that home be traced and
    cruelty charges brought against them?

I know I'm going to be told to just hit next unseen, but notes like
    this really ruin my day.

-Roberta (sitting here severely depressed now)

4889.3BOOVX1::MANDILEHer Royal HighnessThu Aug 29 1991 15:5810
    Hi Roberta!

I intend to ask the shelter that very same question, even if I
have to pursue the issue myself. Of course, there will be the
issue of proving ownership, I think.....

And, no, I won't say hit next unseen, because your reply says
    you care! (-;

Thank God she is being taken care of now... who ever left her alone
should be reckoned with... My theory is "what goes around, comes
    around".

    Send Lucy our love....

Well, Lynne, if you do find out who owned her and decide to approach,
the best way to handle the situation is to trick them into admitting it
was in fact their cat left behind. Maybe by pretending you moved into
the house and found the cat and are thanking them for leaving her for
you. People with their mentality level will probably believe anything!

If you do find them, bring them over to my house and we can chain them
to the front step... with no food, water, shelter or love. Let's see,
it's August now... so we should leave them there until at least the new
    year!!

    Roberta (who is seething now!!)

Thank God for the mail person. Which shelter is Lucy in? Pat Brody's?

4889.7COASTL::NDCPutiput Scottish Folds DTN:297-2313Thu Aug 29 1991 17:2911
No, not Pat's. Lynn lives in Middleboro which is exit 4 off 495.
The shelter is down that way someplace. This is the same shelter
with the manx kitten with the puff-ball tail.

Lynn told me about Lucy when we were out riding one day. Thank GOD
the shelter did finally take her. Poor little thing.

And I also believe the "what you do comes back to you" and if anyone
saw GHOST they'll understand why I've resolved to be a very good girl.
      Nancy

I also believe that you keep coming back until you get it right -
obviously - these @@!!##%!! people have a very long way to go. Karma
catches up with everyone - you can't skate forever - and depending on
which level they end up on they just may come back as a starving 13
year old abandoned cat and maybe then they'll learn the "lesson".

I feel like I just want to hold that cat in my arms ans spoil her to
death! Lots of prayers to you Lucy!

I loved your idea, Roberta!! This whole thing makes me so sad! I say
trick em' into admition, and then chain em' to the steps!

I'm glad to know that Lucy is being given a second chance. She really
    deserves it! Poor thing...

Well, looks like the Gang will be back up to 11 soon! Lucy should
be coming home with me probably next weekend. She sure sounds like
shes' been through an awful lot, but she should be happy spending
her remaining days at the Pleasure Palace for retired Catfolk. Thats
what we sometimes refer our place to, seeing as we have quite a few
    "more mature" catfolk residing there.

I will post more as things happen... have to tell the 10 residents
that a new member will be arriving.

I've been sitting here today pondering the meaning so so many things
and worked myself into some sort of funk - and this Lucy kitty has been
on my mind. So I open this file a few minutes ago and find your note -
and now I just feel so much better about things. It's people like you
and so many others in this file who restore one's faith in people.
Give that kitty lots of hugs and kisses from me.

    Bless ya all!!!!

Well, this is Lucy's final chapter.
I had picked her up Friday here at TWO, Lynne and Lynn brought her
up here. I brought her home and set her up in the bathroom with
comfy accomdations to get her through till Tues. when she had an
appointment with my vet. I brought her in Tues., but he wouldn't
let me take her home last night. Many tests were done. It was
determined she had lymphoma, her little body was so full of cancer,
especially the kidney. Many tumors. She passed away on her own this
morning, just expiring a last weak breath. She is now buried in my
cat cemetary overlooking our fields and gardens.
On Sunday, Lucy told me that she was very appreciative of all that had
been done for her, and to thank both Lynne and Lynn for all their love
and concern. She was so sweet and appreciative of everything we did
for her this weekend. The rest of my gang never even got to meet her
except when I was holding her walking through the house, showing her
the rooms and the other kitties. But, they were sweet enough to walk
out with me this morning to the grave and say a little prayer as we
had a little burial service. And they say animals don't know or care!
Ha! These skeptics should have been there this morning. We must have
been a sight all standing there saying a prayer.
Well, it is getting difficult to see the screen much more, but I
wanted to let everyone know what happened. I hope her life before
she was abandoned was more joyful. I am sure where she is now, she
    is at peace.

It is bitter-sweet that Lucy had a "home" again before she died.
It seems fitting for such a brave spirit to die at home rather
than at a shelter and to have a special resting place. I'm glad
she got to "come home" before she died.
