4864.0. "Hurricane BOB" by HDLITE::SCOTT () Tue Aug 20 1991 15:45

Just signing in to make sure everyone's little darlings in N.E.
survived Hurricane Bob...And wondered how they reacted to it...

Schnapps, Rici and Richard stayed in the basement so I'd know where
they were in case of emergency. I think they felt a bit of cabin
fever, as did we all. Minor signs of "scared-y cats", as well...

Everything is fine and back to normal now...

My guys were so mad at me because I wouldn't let them out all
day....they were having hissy fits and picking on each other.
Some hate to use the kitty litter...but had no choice yesterday!!

I was so worried about my two outdoor ferals...I kept my
porch door open so they could have shelter...but didn't
see them through the storm. But last night at 9:30....
they both came for supper! I was very happy to see them.

Also I sat there and worried about the shelter cats and prayed
the building would hold up. After the storm I wanted to go
up but couldn't get off my street because of a falling tree.
Linda another volunteer called the lady that lives next door
to the shelter...and she went over to check up on them and said
Everything looked okay. I believe Priscilla had been up there
early and took all the cats in the outside pens in...and also
secured the tarps with extra stuff.

Thank god we all made it through the storm!!!!

    Sandy

Well even after two weeks of vacation our stray, Sylvester
was there to greet us home. So I couldn't leave the love
out there and I put him in the cellar till this morning.
I felt guilty putting him back out.

4864.3Hurricane Taja kept Nikki outside during Bob!JUPITR::KAGNOTo cats, all things belong to catsTue Aug 20 1991 16:0832
We had a lot of rain in Grafton but the winds were not as bad as in some
places. Nikki and TK were out in the morning and when the torrential
downpours started I opened the slider to call them in and both came up
on the deck. TK ran inside willingly and Nikki looked like he was
going to follow right behind but all of a sudden he turned around and
bolted off the deck!! Dana and I both went outside two times to catch
him and bring him in but he kept running away from us! We were
soaked to the skin!! I called and called him all day long but he never
showed up. When it was all over, TK jumped down from the chair where
he was sleeping and asked to go out so I told him to find Nikki and
bring him home. About 10-15 minutes later TK showed up on the deck
with Nikki in tow who wasn't as wet as I thought he would be. We
toweled him off and I combed him out (while he hissed at me!) and I
made him stay inside all night to dry off and groom himself. He wasn't
    happy!

While he was out we cracked open the garage door enough so that he
could run in for shelter but he didn't even use it. I'm sure he was
under someone's deck waiting for the weather to settle down.

Nikki has not accepted Taja and has chosen to spend all of his time
outside, only coming in to eat. I'm sure this is why he refused to
come in yesterday and weather the storm on his own. After spending the
day out there, you'd think he'd be happy to come into a dry house but
no... he wanted right back out again!! He sure gave me a lot of gray
    hairs yesterday!!

TK and Kelsey slept through it and Taja and Herbie sat on the cat tree
in front of the slider watching all the leaves and debris fly around.
A large tree fell over and knocked the railing off my neighbor's deck
but that was the only outside damage sustained. We never even lost our
electricity. Compared to some, we were very lucky!

My Cookie and Stormy (Now I know why I chose that name...) sat in the
window during the entire show avidly checking out the leaves that keps
flying across the yard...no biggie..nonchalant as anything...

My calico Callie was fine through the whole thing. It was just another
day for her. I have screened in porch so I let Callie and my persian
Domino go out on the porch to check out the storm. They just layed
there, then all of a sudden a huge, loud gush of wind came by and
Domino's ears and fur on his face went right back (like you'd see
in a cartoon) and he bolted right out of there. I couldn't stop
laughing. He came right out after making sure that the wind was
    under control.

Feendoonie either sat in the window and wayched the action, or slept
on my chair with me. Part of the time she whipped around the house like
a wild panther, and would then attack her "Google" (small stuffed toy
that looks like a cross beween a duck and a shmoo) Then she would fly
off again. She didn't mind being in all day, because she hates rain!

Taja was really antsy before the storm.... running around making all
kinds of noise. Herbie thought the leaking of the garden window was
great fun. He kept watching the water droplets fall into the bucket
and on the shelf and then would dip his paws in it and make footprints
    across the kitchen counter.

Cats do have a sixth sense about these things and instinctly know what
to do and where to go when faced with bad weather. I remember reading
in Cat Fancy about a calico cat named Waif who led her kittens to
safety during a very bad hurricane and a woman followed her with her
own two children. They were the only ones who lived on the beach that
survived the storm. The woman watched her own house demolish from the
    safety haven!

My little twit Diane decided to run out the door when a friend of mine
came in. A HUGE gust of wind came up and literally swept her into a
neighbors yard. My friend when running back out to get her and had a
hard time catching her. When she finally got into the house she looks
at me as if to say "well that wasn't a nice thing to do to me". She
spent the rest of the storm watching the trees sway in the breeze. It
was a riot. She was swaying along with them! Okay so I have a nut for
    a cat.

Nikita spent the day wrapped around her kittens they are a week old.
She'd hiss everytime the window rattled. The kittens just played
pigpile and slept. Nice life huh!

We were lucky no damage and no loss of power. Downtown Nashua and some
of the surrounding streets lost power.

My babies did all right. I kept them locked in certain rooms all day, though.

Pita acted REALLY strange, though. Every time I walked into the room where
she, Tabitha, and Silver were, she was INSIDE one of the drawers! I'd come
in and she'd get out right away, but once I left, back in she went!!

The rest of them were just QUITE happy that their mommy was home ALL day long!

My Callie was being kind of strange a few HOURS before the storm. She
was sorta jumping up in the air & going round & round. It was strange
because she had never done this before. I figured it was one of those
animal things that they do before natural disasters, and I guess I was
right. She spent the rest of the day watching from the windows.

Tabitha crashed out w/ her Daddy in the bedroom. I don't know how these
two could have slept thru this exciting storm, but they did.

A very large weeping willow tree which houses many birds fell. It used
to be right outside of out living room window & provided hours of
entertainment for my babies, but now it's gone...poof!

All of the men in my neighborhood slept while we wives sat around on
our porches & watched old Bob in action! It was great fun!

I hope you all made out OK.

Nippa acted so weird Monday.....She always comes when I call her.....
she didn't Monday. She was out for 2 hours, before I found her in
her yacht. I had climbed in and she lept out from under cover and
jumped on me......fur all bristled up! She was a wreck! Later as
I was backing her *yacht* into the garage, (wouldn't want to be
responsible for losing that ;^) she slipped past me and did this
freaky dance out on the driveway and took off into the hedges.....well
I did get her and placed her down stairs, where she finally got
    comfortable.

I think she sensed the storm, and the flight or fight mode came on....
    very strange!

Well, Happy napped on and off all day, she occasionally would wander
into the kitchen and eat. MS Preschie reclined on the waterbed,
and occasionally wandered over the glass sliders to look outside.
Kissy PLAYED around and for the most part they were pretty unaffected
by it. I did hear a rumor that the 900 line to the "FIRM" was not
working, and that seemed to bother MS Preschie more than any thing
else. I am getting ready to "move".. so I spent the day packing
and the like,. and they were very helpful.(read that to mean they
were into everything.. smirk, grin giggle..

Well, if I expected some profound behavioral change as warning
of the impending natural disaster, I was sadly disappointed.

They ate, slept, played and generally got into trouble - the usual.
Bob did make himself scarce. I think he spent the day behind the
waterbed but thats not so unusual for him either.

We only lost power for about 5 hrs but after my experiences with
Gloria 6 years ago (we lost power for 3 days!) I was ready. I had
turned our big freezer and the fridge up to HIGH that morning. I
filled bottles with water so they'd freeze and by the time the power
went out I had plenty of frozen water in the freezers to keep things
cold. The ice cream didn't even get soft!!

Jack and I have been discussing getting a generator for these
situations. Loss of refridgeration is about the worst part
    of losing power.

We didn't have any downed trees either. We had had three HUGE
pine trees that were within 10 feet of the house removed last
November and boy am I glad we did!!

Well, usually before any storm, Linus is a wild man...running around
talking and raising hell. But, Monday, he was very apprehensive, and I
could tell he was disturbed by all the noises from the wind and sticks
blowing against the apt. Then, when the lights went out, he jumped off
his chair in the other room and came running into where I was, asking
me what the heck was going on. What a cutie!! Oh, he was soooo happy
because my refrig. began de-thawing, and he loved all that food there
on the counter left out while mom was chipping ice out of the
refrig.--what a total pain in the candlelight!!! Well, we both
survived and Li gots lots of attention that day...

It would take more than a minor hurricane to disturb my three. They
socked in on various sofas and chairs and slept through the whole
thing. It was me who was the basket case--anyone know where I can get
D size batteries. (By the way, somewhere I didn't think to look for
batteries--a toy store. They had plenty!)

Miss Moffet, as she always does when she is angry, displeased, fed up,
board, threw-up over the sterio and carpet. No, she wasn't ill.
When it's emotional barf she sits and watches you clean it up, then
barfs up again in the same spot and sits with a smug expression
watching the cleaning up all over again. The guys didn't go ape until
the next morning, then Charlie climbed trees and ran around the yard
    like an express train.

    Kate,

the FIRM is currently suing the phone company over that loss of
revenue; all those humans at home would have meant so much new
business for the FIRM. But at least kitties were able to FAX their
grievences to their favorite attorney. And I do hope that the
new accomdations are befitting one of MS Preshie's social standing.

Deb,, you mean the firm has toll free number to send faxes too..
amazing,. I take it ARGUS was feeling a tad generous.
I am making some progress with my packing... Happy has been
playng "sidewalk superintendant.. she observes what I am doing
for a bit, then she wanders off to eat something, comes backs
and observes some more, then eats more food.. and so forth..
MS Preschie and Kissy have been in all the boxes to make
sure they are ok for packing. Sue Spingler will be "caring
for them " on moving day.. she has volunteered to stay at
the new place with them.. until we are done. Mama Cin suggested
we move them 1st thing in the am,. put them in the "quiet room"/
den and keep the door closed until we are done. Sue will
be there to play with them and make sure they are ok. I was going
to board them, but Mamacin thought it might be better this way..
less stress, and i can cuddle them in between trips.. smirk, grin
giggle.. BTW.. Sue Spingler was permanently hired by Locheed
Calcomp last week, after a stint as a temp with them. she says
to say hello to all. She is looking forward to seeing the kids nd
to palying with them.. and I know with her there,, they wont be
scared. Mama Cin will be there too.. so that means in the am
they get spoiled.. and later in the day.. they get to see
MAMACIN,, and get cuddled by her too.. of course MAMACIN
does use the N word.. sometimes..
I have shown Preschie the floor plan.. she looked at it
briefly and sauntered off to check out those NEATO
boxes.. and perchance try to mail /pack Kissy in one..
    smirk, grin , giggle..!!!
Kate, Happy( watching you work Mummy , is making me hungry..)
Preschie..( HEY THOSE ARE ALL MY BOXES..but don't tell anyone

then takes their fair share of the proceed$...

Deb.. geez I shoulda known..!!! I also heard that next sat , MS
Preschie has "requested a meeting with MAMACIN.." and that she
has contacted THE FIRMand ask that they be preaent at the meeting.
hmmm. my understanding of the issue is tht a couple of weeks
ago, MAMACIN gave me some of her rooming tips, while were
visiting at the show in bedford, so I 'bought the "stuff"
she suggested along with the regular amount of "pressies
and treats" to take home with me. Well MS Preschie was furious,,
she did not like the stuff I bought,, and she felt that I should
have more pressies and treats instead of this stuff. Well she
wants to "discuss this matter with MAMACIN,, and MAMACIN was
quite amenable to the meeting.. she did state however, that just
because she will attend the meeting to discuss this issue, that does
not mean that she will give MS PRESCHIE her own way.. it was at this
point , that MS PRESCHIE notified tTHE FIRM. So DEB, do you
think the firm will go easy on me?.. hmmmm..

You know, I think Tiffany has been conversing with Ms. Preschie
of late. She keeps talking about a style of living that is consistent
with such regal names as Tiffany and Silver Shadow. I suspect that
