4671.0. "Stray in Clinton, Mass." by POWDML::SIMARD (God Bless the Mother of the Bride) Thu May 23 1991 15:51

My husband works for a company in Clinton, Mass and was at the
warehouse the other day and opened a dooor that hadn't been opened in
many days and out weaved a stray with a collar on that looked almost
starved to death and was dirty and obviously very sick. He was
frothing at the mouth as well.

Well, my hubby, being such a softy under that tough exterior, went
to the grocery store and bought a can of cat food and got some water
    for the poor baby.

He came home and told me about it and of course I wanted to bring it
home. But the frothing at the mouth worried me so I have had to back
off. I don't mind donating to the cat food fund though and I think he
will let the cat free in a couple of days, after he has gained some
    strength.

It obviously belonged to someone with the collar and there might even
be another one in the vicinity that was just to scared to come out.
When he left the cat had eaten most of the food and was trying to clean
    itself.

    He will keep watch.

4671.2What does he/she look like?FSOA::NGRILLOThu May 23 1991 16:2311
What does this cat look like?

In my office, one of the secretary's cats has been
missing since Monday night (except she lives by Digital in Marlboro
(about 2 miles from the MROs). Her's is an orange and white
long-haired cat (kind of looks angora.)

P.S. Could some write a quick note on how to start a note. Maybe I
could do one for her on her cat.

To start a new note you type: WRITE at the cursor.

Then you'll have a blank area on your screen, such as you do when you
    reply.

Then title it as you would on a reply, and that's it!

I'd put an ad in the local paper (many papers allow free found ads)
noting that the cat may have been lost for some time. Don't put in a
full description of the cat, just a partial one, so the people who
collect cats for research places can't pretend it's theirs. I'd
also call any nearby animal shelters and report it and see if they
might take it. Is there any possibility of you or your
husband taking this cat in to a vet?

Maybe the frothing at the mouth was due to lack of water? I wouldn't
be afraid to help this kitty. Perhaps you can take it to the vet for a
"well" check, then keep it isolated in your home.

If it has a collar, perhaps it has a home nearby and got locked in the
warehouse accidentally. Advertise to try to locate the owner.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

4671.6Caution is in order here..SOLVIT::IVESThu May 23 1991 19:2014
Isn't frothing at the mouth a sign of rabies, along with seeking
    a dark place to hide?

We animals lovers have to keep in mind the rampaging Rabies
that is traveling very fast all over New England.

Be cautious with him but see if you can't get the poor cat
to a vet at the first opportune time. You might call a vet
or animals control officer and see what suggestions they
    may make.

    Thanks for caring

4671.7Distemper?ICS::ANDERSON_MFri May 24 1991 11:0812
Regarding frothing at the mouth: our Benji had distemper and frothing
at the (of the) mouth was a symptom. We brought him to the vets and he
gave him a shot and some pills to give him. He told us to keep in
wrapped in a baby blanket during the night and to put him in bed with
us. Poor baby had been up a tree for three days in the rain - had been
dumped on the side of the highway and a dog chased him up the tree.
We rescued him - that's when he got real sick.

He lived to be 21 years old!

Could someone explain what distemper is? Is it like a flu for cats?
    Can cats die from this?

    Thanks,

Distemper is also known as Panleukopenia. Young or debilitated cats
can die from distemper. When you vaccinate your cats, one of the
things that you are protecting them against is distemper.

The cat could be frothing at the mouth for a number of reasons.
Since there IS a rabies epidemic right now and frothing at the mouth
is a symptom of rabies please be VERY careful. I wouldn't jump to
conclusions and assume that the cat has rabies, but be cautious and
DO NOT bring the cat into contact with your cats.

One possible explanation might be that he ate or drank something
caustic due to dehydration and starvation. Be sure he has LOTS
of fresh water and get him to a vet ASAP.

    Keep us posted.

Sorry, I was out sick with an intestinal something. Update is:
Husband went back to feed and water again but no one showed up. He
thinks someone else has a key to the place and might have pushed the
cat out or the cat could have gotten out on its own since the last
my husband saw of him/her it was doing quite well.

Very friendly cat, would rub on his legs and started to clean himself
after eating so husband thought it was on its way to better health.
Husband didn't feel badly that he got out because of his health being
so improved he figured he would make it to his own home since he did
have a collar and we only hoped he remembered his home and what ever
    direction it was in.

I will ask the old boy tonite what the latest is on it and will insert
    here tomorrow.

    Thanks
