4624.0. "NEED NAME/INFO FOR HIMALAYAN LYNX" by USRCV1::RENDINOP () Wed May 08 1991 17:39

I am the proud MOM of a 9 wk old Himalayan Lynx kitty. I have never
owned this breed before. Can any of you tell me the characteristics of
this breed. He is absolutely gorgeous. I also need help in giving him
a name. I would like something unique, that is associated to his
    breed.

His dad is a Himalayan Lynx and his mom is a Himalayan Seal. The Lynx
seems to be dominant. He looks just like his daddy.

    Any help would be appreciated.

4624.2Great choice of a catSOLVIT::IVESWed May 08 1991 19:3917
I own two himmies. One retired queen, Princess Char-Ming 9 years old
in July, and Mr. Miyagi who is 6 years old. They both are seal point
and are just big marshmellow loves.

The himmies are very layed back cats. They seem to attach themselves
to one person mostly. Ming has a semi pushed in face but Miyagi has
the wide open look. They get along very well together and both are
quite shy with new or strange things/persons.

Both like to be groomed, fortunately.

You have made an excellant choice in kitties.

Keep us posted on his progress.

    Regards,
    Barbara

Himmies are the best cats on the planet! Right, everyone?? ;^)
I've got two Himmies, a seal point and a cream point. I agree with
Barbara; they are very layed back, but every cat is an individual.
Good luck with the new baby!!

Oh, as for a name, just find one that fits and sounds good when
    yelled!!

4624.4JUST LOVE THAT FACEUSRCV1::RENDINOPThu May 09 1991 12:1522
    Thanks for the comments!!

He is doing great so far. I was a little bit nervous the first day I
brought him home. He was extremely scarred. I felt really bad for him.

The breeder told me that their family has made a rule not to touch the
new kitties because the family would get to attached and find it hard
to let any of them go. Therefore, he had hardly no contact with
humans. No wonder the little guy was so scarred.

He has adjusted well in the past couple of days - playful and running
all over. He has a loud purrr which is really cute.

I hope their will be no effect on his character from not having any
human contact as a new born. Any comments would be appreciated.

I agree I feel that I did make a good choice. He just has that
adorable face that you just can't help but love.

I am having a hard time finding a name that suits him though.

A breeder owes their buying public a responsibilty to sell them well
adjusted, sociable kittens. What an awful theory to put into practice,
and how unfair to you and others who purchase kittens that will need to
be taught how to trust humans.

I'm sure you will be able to work with him and bring him around with
lots of love and attention. In this particular situation, going to a
new home at 9 weeks of age was probably better for him than waiting
until he was older (most breeders will not let a kitten go before the
age of 12 weeks). Be patient with him and he should turn into a
    wonderful family pet.

Good luck in finding a name... hope my suggestions offline helped!

4624.6one breeder's point of viewCRUISE::NDCPutiput Scottish Folds DTN:297-2313Thu May 09 1991 16:1527
I am a breeder and consider it critical that my kittens get handled
from just about the minute they're born. In fact, I was noticing
that Bonnie's kittens were much more outgoing than Halie's because
they've gotten alot more attention (and are a week older). So,
last night we watched "Days of Thunder" and I had 6 kittens sleeping
in my lap :^). (Halie's 5 plus Tiffany, of course)

I can understand you're breeder saying that it makes it hard to let
them go. IT DOES! But I have gotten nothing but glowing reports on
my kittens' dispositions and on how loveable they are so I think I
    must be doing something right.

My suggestions are to spend alot of time with your new baby - somehow
I don't think you'll need too much encouragement in doing that. Play
with him and pet him alot. When you pick him up hold him close and
securely (not tight, but with both hands) so he'll feel safe with
you. He'll adjust and come climbing into your lap in no time.

There ARE simply some cats that don't like to be handled - Halie HATES
to be picked up but loves to be petted - but from what I know of
Himmies I doubt that'll be the case here.

Enjoy your new baby. After he sees what a positive experience being
with you is he'll forget about being nervous and turn into a little
    purrbox.

    Update

My new kitty is doing just fine. He is adjusting very well. Lovable,
playful, and full of energy. He also enjoys laying on my lap now.

Thank you for all of your comments. BTW - I picked a name for him -
his name is Chico, pronounced Cheeko.

4624.8Name that Kitty.. HELP!!!MRKTNG::ROSSIGive me another word for Thesaurus..Wed May 15 1991 12:4771
Congratulations on your new little Himmy. I am a Himmy breeder in
Merrimack NH. I too have to agree with Nancy DC, that it's a breeders
obligation to raise as best as we can well adjusted kittens. This is
done by a lot of contact. I have a litter at home now that are 10 weeks
old and as soon as you pick them up, with the first stroke they start to
purr and purr and purr. I love hearing them do that at such a young
age. To me it means, I like you, I'm glad your holding me, and I'm one
very happy baby.....

About Naming your cat... I'm glad you have dicided on one, believe me
its not an easy thing to do. I am forever confronted with this
difficult chore. Especially since my eight year old daughter feels she
has to approve and have the final say about what I name the kitties..
This makes it practically impossible unless I name them Floppsie,
Moppsie, or Cottentail to meet with her approval.

I remember about a year ago she was on this "Drops" kick. I had just
purchased a tortie point female and her choice for names were,

	Snow drops
Snow shoe Drops It had a white spot on it's front paws
	Raindrops
	DewDrops

I wanted, I believe at the time to call her Chloe (like the perfume)

Well we had to call in a moderator, Her Grandmother who came up with a
new name, that was completely unbiased and rather clever. We called her
Kahlua n' Cream "KC" for short which fit her perfectly because she was
a Seal Tortie Point. Dark Brown Mask with a splash of cream markings..

But as time goes on I'm getting worse and worse with names actually it
has become, as my husband says an obcession. I keep at all times a
running list of cat names broken down by sex and color. It's about 5
pages long. I will be driving down the road and see a sign or
advertisment and shout out "that's a great cat name" and jot it down to
add to my list. Out at dinner the other night with my husband a song
comes on and right in the middle of our conversation I'm jotting the
name of it on a napkin so I don't forget it, would make a great cat
name!! Am I the only one that does this? Anyone else out there with
this same type of behavior. I hope so...

I think if I keep this up, Who knows I might have quite the demand for the
list some day.

Any way Congratulations again.. And yes Himmys are wonderful, loveable,
That's what makes them so popular.

Take good care of eachother

Valerie Rossi

    Valerie,

I make cat name lists too, only mine are organized by letter of the
alphabet. Imagine trying to come up with good names that also fit with
the year's letter. This year is the "O" year. It has given me some
    trouble.

	Oooo, .

Oliver, after Oliver Twist - always asking for more - more food, more
cuddles, more of the bed, more attention, more room in the sun!

And if you've got a bossy one - Olive or Oyl, (you know, with Popeye)

Or Olive, if you have a dark-grey smokey one, after the fruit.

Or Omar - dark eyes, after Omar Shriff

Owen - A welsh cat???????.......... a black cat.

	Orange, also after a fruit.

Or a real stage stealer - Olivier (Laurence)

And we already have an Omelette in the conference.

If you really have a noisy one - Opera

And one with big eyes - Owl

Or one with very sharp claws that like climbing up your legs - Ouch!

Orphan - if they're a stray, as in Orphan Annie

	Olaf

	Oatmeal - if its spotted

I'm sure there must be loads more............

Some more, if you want to have a theme of "places"..........

Ohio, Orlando, Oslo, Orleans, Oxford, Ontario, Ottawa, Orly,
Oval (cricket ground), Oporto, Odessa, Olympia, Oregon, Oakland,
	Omaha.

And with names, I forgot Othello.
and Orrinoco (sp?) from the Wombles of Wimbledon.

I'm trying to avoid naming my kittens because it makes it so much
harder to part with them and the new owners want to name them
themselves. However there are always one or two who get named
in spite of my efforts - LIke Tiffany and Sundance.

There are a lot of great O names in there but since Jo Ann isn't
at work today and Friday, I thought I'd mention that she's also
interested in O names with a musical theme. Anybody out there
creative enough to come up with some? I've been having one heck
of a time. She's already got Oh-bla-dee and Oh-bla-da (from Life
Goes On) and the only other one I've been able to come up with
(and I'm not sure of the spelling) is Oh-la-dey (anyone old enough
    to remember that song?).

I don't know what it was for Bon! I thought of it and wrote it down
then realized it is a pretty stupid name for a cat :^).

Another O' song, by Madonna, is "Open your heart."

    Then there's "Over the Rainbow."

My favorite, though not a song, is Optical Illusion. I think that is a
great O name for a Birman cat with show potential.

Obbligato - An accompaniment that is an integral, indespensable
part of a musical piece. Besides Gato means cat, doesn't
		    it?

Orpheus - A legendary Thracian poet and musician.

Onomatopoeia - certainly doesn't pertain to anything musical, but
it sounds musical when you say it!
