4615.0. "CAT'S IN "SEASON"" by DACT6::COLEMAN (ULTRIX-ee in Training) Tue May 07 1991 12:55

I know I have seen this before, but I can't seem to find
what I need to know.

How long is a cat in heat? My house has become very noisy.
I'm sure MANY of you breeders out there know what I'm
talking about! Since this is the first time I've gone
through this, I need to know how LONG I'm going to go
through this!

As a follow up to a previous note I entered regarding
finding a "stud", I think I've found one -- Holly Taylor's
breeder, Jackie Taylor. We talked for almost an hour
last night! Extremely nice and knowledgeable person! I
think we'll probably breed Gracie in the fall, that is,
IF we survive this cycle! Gracie will be a year old in
3 weeks, so I may say, "Bring on the stud!"

Anyhow, an answer to the "heat" cycle would be MUCH
appreciated!

I think that heat cycles in female cats vary. Some go in and out of
season almost constantly while others take longer to come in. I've
heard breeders complain that they would like to breed [insert queen
name here], if she ever decides to come in season.

Hmm, I think once in heat, the cycle lasts for about three weeks or so?
Will have to leave that question open for the experienced breeders in
    the file.

And it seems I've read in here that a female can come in season again
shortly after giving birth to a litter... which is why breeders have to
be extra cautious with confining and isolating procedures.

Roberta is right, queens can vary greatly in their cycles. Your cat
could be in full season for as long as three weeks at a time, or she
may be out in a week or so. Also, she can be out of season for a
matter of a few days, then pop right back in again for another three
    weeks.

When to breed her may depend on her. If she stays in heat for long
periods of time, and then comes right back into heat within a few days
of her last heat, you may want to think about breeding her sooner than
the fall. Prolonged heat cycles without mating increases the risks of
    uterine infection too.

Sounds like you have found your mentor!! That is great.

I hope she's more cooperative than CC who hated Robileu on site
and INSISTED she was much more interested in Jack and I than in
    a stud cat ;^)))))))))))))
4615.5What a STUD!DACT6::COLEMANULTRIX-ee in TrainingFri Aug 02 1991 13:1912
Since this is her "first time" I don't know WHAT to expect! I was
talking with the breeder last night and she said her stud, Jazz, is
quite sly. The last girl she put in with him, he hid on an upper perch.
Poor girl didn't know WHAT happened! Evidently he just jumped down,
performed his duty, and went away! (Typical male ;^) ) Maybe if that
happens, Gracie will realize it's not all that horrible -- but then
    again, it might be!

Will let you know on our first encounters!

    Cheryl & Gracie!

If you are still in Ohio on the 24-25th of August drop by Medina and
say hello! :^) Good luck getting her bred. Sounds like the male knows
    what he is doing.

I used to feel so bad for the females until the first time I
watched Batman and Halie. NOw my sympathies are definitely with
    the male. ;^)
4615.8Now that THAT'S over with!DACT6::COLEMANULTRIX-ee in TrainingMon Aug 05 1991 17:3022
Well, Gracie got to meet Jazz this weekend -- and 7 other
Korats AND 2 persians! I got Gracie there about 10, and
by 2:00 they had already "performed". So I was REALLY happy,
cause all I could think of was her going OUT of season!
When we went to pick her up Sunday, the breeder wasn't sure
if they had done it anymore. Gracie had this pathetic look
on her face like, "mom, dad, you'll NEVER guess what
happened! It was horrible and great at the same time!"
Anyhow, Jackie (the breeder) let Gracie out on the floor,
and then let Jazz out. Gracie was like, "Look mom, look
what I learned how to do!" and got down with her backside
in the air! So at least we know she mated twice, possibly
3 times! So hopefully in a few weeks we'll start seeing
signs! Im SOOOOOOO excited, and nervous, since I'll be
so new at this -- I've never had kittens before! (Neither
has Gracie ;&^) ) Anyhow, Gracie's still walking around
the house with her butt up in the air -- hopefully this
will end SOON!

Keep your fingers and paws crossed!!

She should come out of season soon. It takes a few days sometimes.
Congratulations to both of you. We will be looking forward to hearing
    stories about little Korat babies.

RE: Gracoe

That's fantastic!! Can't wait to see more Korats around. Wish I could find
a male that is so easily accessable. OHIO is 13 hours from here, but that
still wouldn't help!! Jazz is PITA's father! )-:

RE: Jo

You're going to be in Ohio the 24th-25th?? So am I!! I'll be in Dayton for
the CFF International show.

Holly
4615.11How far is it to Dayton?WR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOset home/cat_max=infinityWed Aug 07 1991 21:558
I will be in Medina for annual SCBF (Sacred Cat of Burma Fanciers)
show. Medina is about 20 minutes outside of Cleveland. Where is
Dayton? I arrive in Cleveland at 9:00am on Thursday the 22nd, and
leave Cleveland on Monday the 26th at about noon.

    Maybe we can meet up?

4615.12Like to drive?DACT6::COLEMANULTRIX-ee in TrainingThu Aug 08 1991 11:5612
Just an FYI for you two -- I'm originally from Ohio --
Medina and Dayton are about 5 hours apart (give or take
a half hour). Maybe you could meet somewhere in the
middle?? Dayton is closer to Columbus, and Columbus is
5 hours to Cleveland.

I'm going to try to get to Ohio that weekend (I'm
from Youngstown, which is 50 minutes south of Cleveland).
So, if I am there, I will definitely try to get to
Medina to the cat show!

    Cheryl

If you make it there, be sure to look me up! Nancy Jenkins and Linda
Sobek will also be there. I am not certain if any other Feliners will
be there. I am staying at the Knights Inn in Medina and will be
arriving Thursday the 21st and staying til Monday the 26th.

BTW, I won't be renting a car, so I wouldn't be able to make that
    half-way drive to Dayton. :^(

Yeah, and I'm riding with a bunch of people to Dayton, so I wouldn't be able
to make the half way ride either. Seems a shame, Jo!! We'll be SO MUCH
closer but still unable to meet! Oh well! Have fun!! We'll be displaying
Sweetie as Best National Alter and this will be Kyra's second show.
