4457.0. "Burger King Kitties need help!" by ASABET::JENN_HANSEN () Tue Mar 12 1991 14:43

I'm looking for some help, or a name of someone or some organization
that could help me save these poor animals...

Last night, while pulling into Burger King in Hudson,Ma., I saw
something that really surprised me, a full grown cat and one little
kitten. We immediately stopped to see what was going on, and then 2 more
little kittens come running out from behind the trash buckets to their
mother, and the cats are just standing in the parking lot freezing and
starving, trying to get into the cars, and just plain looking for some
attention. I went in and asked an employee if they were aware of the
situation, and apparently, someone had dropped off a pregnant cat,
and she had her kittens there, and they just leave them out in the
parking lot and not worry about it. For those of you who aren't familiar
with the Burger King in Hudson, this place is in the middle of mass
confusion, its on a very busy street (Washington St), theres no woods,
no houses, not any places to get some shelter, (that I could see anyways).
At least if there was some kind of shelter for them to get, I wouldn't
be so upset, but from what I could see, there was none. The Burger King
employee wasn't really bothered by any of this, but I certainly was and I
want to help them, somehow. If I already didn't have cats I would have
scooped them up in a second, but its just impossible for me, but I will
do anything to help them find something better than living in a
  Burger King parking lot.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I call the MSPCA?

  Help!!

  Thanks in advance,

  Jennifer

Jennifer, how old do you think the kittens are? Can you post a
description of them and the mother?

The Framingham Animal Humane Society might be able to help, or can
refer you to someone who can. Unfortunately, I don't have the number
with me, and know the shelter is full but maybe there are foster homes.
They are located on Oregon Road in Southboro if you want to call
    information for the number.

This is really upsetting to me. There have been some people in here
looking for kittens so maybe a description of all would help to place
    them.

Please call the MSPCA today. It is getting very cold out again
and is suppose to snow Thursday. I wish I could take them but I
can't. I wish someone would leave that kid outside without food
and shelter for the next three days and see how he likes it!

Roberta's suggestion is a good one. I believe the Framingham Humane
Society number is 875-3776. There is a person named Nancy Hudson
who also lives in Hudson, MA who most likely can help you as she is
heavily involved with the Fram. A.H.S.

The mother was an orange tabby, and from what I could see the kittens
looked to be about 8-10 weeks, maybe younger. The one kitten that
I saw the most of, was gray, and very fluffy...

I'm calling the Humane Society right now. Wish me luck.

Just a quickie update...I am getting nowhere. I tried the 875 # that
was listed in an earlier reply, no answer, so I checked with
Directory assistance, and they have no listing for the Framingham
Animal Humane Society in Framingham, or Southboro, as the reply
stated. So, in desperation, I called the MSPCA hotline and he referred
me to the Worcester Animal Rescue, and maybe I am being overly
sensitive about this whole situation, but they weren't very helpful,
the girl who answered just told me to contact a local shelter, or
bring them there M-Sat from 8-4:30...

I am willing to do whatever I can to help these cats. It might be a
tricky getting them into the car, I'm sure they are afraid of people,
(although they were coming right up to cars last night), I'll
bring them anywhere, even pay for their food, I just want to get them
out of that !@#$ parking lot...

    Any other ideas?

The Framingham Humane Society has no number - that is, it
is run by the animal control officer, and the cats are
boarded in foster homes. One of the noters is a foster home.
The # for the officer is 508-620-4870.

I have a love/hate relationship with these type stories....

left out in the cold by some @%*(%^% bothers me for days....

I may have a solution. I volunteer for the Humane Society
here in Nashua. I just called Michelle, the director and asked
if you were able to catch the kitties, if they would take them
and she said yes. If you want, maybe someone closer to you
can help you catch them, then you and I could meet somewhere
in between and I could bring them to the shelter for you, if
you don't want to drive that distance.

Send me mail if you want or you can call me at DTN 381-2253.
I just dread the thought of those babies being out in this
    	cold with the snow coming.

I also saw them the other night. I tryed to get close to them, but they
were too afraid to come close. I went into Burger King and got some
water for them. I also went to Victory and got some food and left it
for them. I couldnt get close enough to them, but it looks like there
are at least 4. The mother appears to be an orange tiger. There was
also a grey kitten and I also saw a black long hair cat. I know there
was another one but I couldnt see him/her. I presently have a stray cat
in my spare room, who I picked up the other day. She clearly has worms
and is very under nourished. I could possibly take these cats
(TEMPORARILY) if someone would find them a place ASAP. I cant have
anymore cats as I am not even supposed to have cats in my apartment.
But I cant stand the thought of those kittys outside in this weather.
If someone could help me catch them, I could take them until the
weekend. I live in Marlboro and work in Hudson. Please let me know if
anyone needs my help...I'd be glad to help!

I know someone that *might* be interested in adopting a kitty if they
were dropped off at the Humane Society in Nashua. My mom has been
"toying" with the thought of adopting a kitten AND her favorites are
GRAY and FLUFFY, so if one of the kittens fits the description we might
have a deal. Please keep us posted as to the whereabouts of these
kitties and how the situation is going!!

Well, myself and another noter are heading over to BK around 5 to
try and save these kitties, the Humane Society in Nashua has
agreed to take them, (Thanks JJ!). Judging from .14's reply,
its going to be tough catching these little buggers, anyone
have any experience??? I plan to bring cans of cat good and tuna,
something strong smelling to lure them over.

    Any other ideas?

From the sounds of it one of these babies might fit the
bill but keep in mind that they have most likely not
had any human contact and may be hard to calm down.
Your best bet would be to call the Humane Society directly
a few days after we bring the kitties in. They will be
'in quarantine' for at least 10 days anyway. But I hope
your mom can take one of them!

Provided of course Jen and the other noter (who are you?
speak up so we can say thanks! =) ) can catch the little
    	buggers.

Jen, I'd send mail to Nancy DC, CRUISE::NDC just in case
she doesn't get a chance to read your note. She's
caught many a feral cat and would definitely give you
    	some ideas!

4457.18My methodJUPITR::KAGNOI'm51%Pussycat,49%Bitch-Don'tPush it!Tue Mar 12 1991 18:5816
Here is a technique that worked for me in catching feral kittens:

Bring a large cat carrier. Bait it with tuna or other strong smelling
cat food. Place the food way in the back of the carrier. When kittens
go in, let them eat for awhile. Wait until they are totally engrossed
in food, then sneak up to the back of carrier very quietly and quickly
tilt it up while closing the door shut. This is a tricky maneuver, but
will keep them from running out. The food will fly everywhere and
the kittens will freak out, but you will have safely caught them.

Try it, and let us know if it works. I found this method better than a
Hav-A-Hart trap cause once one of the cats saw how the trap worked they
wouldn't go in it no matter how hungry they were (usually the trap will
only catch one or two at a time). With the carrier, they will all pile
in and then you can nab them.

Well unfortunately, Jen, Kim and Jen's fiance didn't have
any luck. Only momma kitty and one of the kittens showed
up to begin with and they wouldn't let anyone get within
    	5 feet of them. sigh......

4457.23Keep trying, you'll get them!!JUPITR::KAGNOI'm51%Pussycat,49%Bitch-Don'tPush it!Wed Mar 13 1991 11:5218
    I don't understand...

They are trying to get into cars but won't let anyone near them?

Anyway, if you are truely set on catching these kitties it takes lots
of time and determination. It took me an entire summer to get the 4
feral kittens living in the woods behind my house What kept me going
was knowing that if I didn't catch them, they would start to interbreed
and make even more kittens for me to catch! I also got the mom and
dads. If you don't catch mom, history will surely repeat itself.

Just keep at it. I wish I was closer to help. The cat carrier trick
was the best approach, and had I thought of it earlier I probably would
have had the kittens halfway thru the summer vs. the end!!

Right!! It takes time and LOTS of patience and persistance in many
    cases.
I know it's frustrating that such small, defenseless animals are able
to elude a person, but remember...these little creatures have no
    reason to trust any humans.

I cannot remember what channel it was on, but during the past week
there was a bit on T.V. about a man in the West who has a ranch where
he typically has over 150 cats that he's rescued. The specific rescue
that was shown was two former pets that had been abandoned on a stone
jetty which ran about a half-mile into the ocean. These animals had no
water available, and he fed and watered them for about 6 weeks before
he was able to lure them into a trap with water. The ironic thing was
that when he finally DID catch them, he caught both within 15 minutes
of each other. If youcould have only seen his livingroom!! Musta been
50 cats there alone...all crawling over him, rubbing up against
him...getting 'scritched', etc....and then this man caome on camera and
announced..."You know..all of these cats were wild when I caught
them...but look at them now...they trust me now....."

So...it may require a trap being set...if the mother is cuaghe it
also may meke it much easier to catch the kittens..

4457.25ASABET::JENN_HANSENWed Mar 13 1991 13:0016

    Yes...last night was unsuccessful. Sigh.

Thats what I couldn't understand, Monday night, the Mother cat and her
gray kitten were walking right up to cars, rubbing up against them,
under them, etc., but none of the people got out of the cars so maybe
its just plain humans that they are scared of. Momma kitty wouldn't
come near the box I had, even with the tuna in it, but they had no
problem with walking up to the cans, as long as you were 5-10 feet
away. The second you moved, they were off like rockets.

One good thing is they didn't appear to be very skinny, however they
did have thick winter coats on so it was deceiving. I feel good that
they at least got a good meal for the night...

Jenn, just keep trying but use a large cat carrier, the larger the
better. I have one you can borrow if need be. It really is important
to get she and her babies used to eating inside of something instead of
out in the open. I know how discouraging it is when you try and get
nowhere, believe me!! Another good food source are sardines. They
smell and look horrible but my cats will kill for them.

here is a suggestion..... you may want to give Carol Marchione
in Framingham a call. She is the President of the Fram. Humane Society.
I don't have a phone book handy but she lives on Belknap Road and
it is under Ronald Marchione. She is a real hard person to catch on
the phone - but she might be able to help. Tell her that you tried
the Humane Tel # in the phone book with no results. Also mention
that you need help in trapping them. She may ask what you plan on
doing with them after capture, as more than likely the shelter will be
    full.

It's worth a phone call tho.
    Good luck.

Keep going every day and feeding them. After a while they'll begin
to associate you with the food and will start trusting you a bit more.
Talk to the manager of the Burger King and see if he'll let you put
a have-a-heart trap out there. i have one I can loan you.
My only condition is that you chain it to something so that it
    can't be stolen.

You'll want it in a very inconspicuous place so no one sees it and
you'll need to check it twice a day. Once in the morning and once
    in the evening.

It took us a week once to catch an x-stray that had escaped from my
vet's after a spay. And this was a cat that had been living with
humans for over 6 months. She reverted to wild very quickly.

Just keep in mind the good you're doing. Don't you wish you could
just go there, open the carrier and say. "Look guys, I have food
and a warm place for you with loving people. Just climb on into the
carrier and I'll take you there." Too bad it isn't that easy :*)

Maybe this might help. We have alot of stray dogs around our house and
we haven't had any luck trying to catch them (to turn them over to the
dog catcher) Anyway, the dog catcher said to use our dog as bait, put
her in the car and leave one door open when the stray comes into the
car, shut the door. Open the other and get the bait out (our dog)
Now i don't know if this will apply to mom and her kitties, but if they
are rubbing against and underneath the car, why not give it a try. The
only thing I suggest is that you use cat food as bait!!!!

One thing that worked in catching the fearls down the street from me
was this: feed them daily and let them get used to you - some of them
actually let us pet them after a bit and we were able to get them by
the scruff and into the box - when those were taken care of we changed
the feeding procedure by cutting back and letting them get good and
hungry - when they came up to the food we were able to get them with a
net or in the have-a-heart. I don't know if this will work giving the
location with the dumpster - seems like there's enough around for them
to eat - my ferals were in a large garden environment wihout many
people around but we got all 14 spayed and nutered over a period of
time - most of them were tamed and the 4 that were completely wild were
put back in the garden where we have provided a shelter and we feed
    them once a day.

It does take time and patience but don't give up!

    Good luck,

I spoke with the manager at B.K. yesterday and she was quite reluctant to
let me try to trap the kitties (thanks for the offer for the trap, Nancy).
The manager was worried about liabilities, etc.

So, I tried a number of places (Hudson Dog Officer/Buddy Dog - no answer at
either place) and today I finally contacted the Animal Rescue League in
Boston to see if they had any suggestions.

Well, as it turns out, they not only gave me the name of a man who is an
expert at trapping strays, they also said he would come all the way to Hudson
to help our B.K. kitties! My faith in humankind has been restored.

I called the manager of Burger King to give her his name and number and when
to get in touch with him and she seemed quite sympathetic to the cause.
Apparently a number of the employees at BK feel sorry for the kitties, and
some even interested in adopting them, but they could never get near them.

So, cross your fingers everyone and maybe soon the B.K. kitties will have
  safe, warm homes.

  Simone

P.S. [The B.K. Manager said she would call the Rescue League tomorrow to
set something up, so if you go into B.K. maybe it wouldn't hurt to
inquire as to how the capture is progressing]

I went to Burger King at lunch-time. I've been there several times
since that yellow cat was found there. I've fed her and her kitten a
few times. The last 3 or 4 times I went there, I couldn't find any of
the cat or kittens, so I hoped that they all had good homes.

Today, I saw the yellow cat. She's injured...bad. Her back legs are
all beaten up and her tail is just hanging down. I feel so depressed,
I can't stand it. I'm sitting here typing this crying at my desk.

This cat needs to be rescued and brought to a shelter. She can hardly
    walk anymore.

Please someone help me help this cat.

is this the Burger King in Hidson, Ma? If so, my suggestion is still
to call the Fram Humane Soc. and tell them.. If the tel # in the book
is wrong then call Carol Marchione (or it might be Marchioni) on
Belknap Road in Fram. It may be under Ronald Marchione. Carol is
the president of the Fram Hum. Soc. and is very hard to reach-
but keep trying. Nancy Hudson works closely with the Fram Humane
Soc. and she comes from Hudson, MA. She could probably help.

I don't have the latest copy of Paw Prints - the Humane Society
newsletter and it has the tel # in it. The other source for the
tel # is by calling teh Fram, Animal Hos. and asking for the
humane society #. Fram An. Hos. # is 877-0900. I am going there
tomorrow with my dog - I can got the # then if you don't get
it sooner. I'll post it here.

I have been talking to Lenora who works in the MRO library and who also
works with the Framingham Humane Society. She has contacted a friend
who lives in Hudson and has dealt with these situations before. They
also have the Hudson Dog Officer involved.

They were at Burger King last night and saw the cat, but the cat is
very trap shy. Apparently, someone from Buddy Dog trapped her kittens
a couple of weeks ago and the mother cat saw it. So, it's going to be
tough getting a hold of her.

But the bottom line is several people are working on the situation to
rescue this cat. I'll keep everyone informed!

4457.53UPDATE ON BURGER KING KITTYDLNVAX::PALMERWed May 08 1991 16:2424

I just got back from the Hudson Burger King. We saw the cat, set
up the trap, and sat back to watch. Unfortunately, she was spooked
by us and didn't reappear again during the hour that I sat nearby
in my car. Several cats of open cat food were around which we took
away so that she will go into the trap. Please, everyone, don't
put any food out for this cat. Volunteers from both Framingham
Humane Society & Buddy Dog are working on this. We need to get
her hungry enough to go into the trap, this will be next to impossible
if food keeps appearing for her! One of the volunteers & the Hudson
Dog Officer will be cruising by today and will be trapping tonight
and until we catch her. I will certainly let you know developments
as they happen, but remember DO NOT FEED AT THE HUDSON BURGER KING.
    Thanks!

Also, it was hard to see exactly how bad off she was since she won't
let us get too close but she does seem to be able to move pretty
quickly. She definitely has something wrong with her back end,
though, and her tail appears to be broken so that it hangs down.
When we do get her (notice I didn't say "If"!) she will go immediately
to a vet. Thanks for the concern on all of your parts. I will
    keep in touch.

We have had SUCCESS! Last night (05/09/91) around 10 p.m. another
Framingham Humane Society volunteer and myself were able to trap
the orange tiger kitty with the messed-up back end! We took the
cat directly to the vet who looked at it and seemed to feel that
it is a male. His tail looks in really bad shape & the vet was
unsure whether it was possible to save it, his whole bottom area
was very swollen, all of the fur was gone and as of right now I
have no idea what could have caused him to have this problem. As
soon as I find out more I will write more.

He/She seems to not be feral -- he/she allowed us to roll him around
in the trap to get a closer look at this back end & you could see
that the poor kid was so scared. I feel so bad for him/her...
I am still confused about what happened with the pregnant female
from back in March. We have not seen any other cats near the Burger
King except for yet another large male orange cat who was never
interested in our trap and looks very healthy (although he need
to get neutered!) Anyways, we will be letting the sympathetic people
who work at the car dealership nearby know that if they see any
other cats in the area that might possibly be the (former) pregnant
female that we will come to help.

I'll let you all know what I hear on the condition of the kitty
    trapped last night.

I just spoke with the animal hospital technician and she says that
he's definitely a boy. He has tested negative for FeLV, is not
feral, and his tail is in the process of being looked at to see
what can be done. They have taken X-rays to see if they can find
out anything about further damage to his back end. The technician
said that they thought that the hair loss from his back legs might
have been caused by urine burns. Poor guy!

I'm afraid that I have bad news about our little Burger King buddy.
His pelvis was fractured and due to that and his fractured tail
he had no control over his bladder causing him to be incontinent.
It was determined by the vets who looked at him that nothing could
be done to remedy the situation and so we had to make the hard decision
to have him euthanized. We were all very upset about this, especially
since he really was very sweet -- purred all the time and liked
to give head bumps. I'm very sorry to have to give you all this
news. I guess we can only hope that he's in some better place now.

Lenora, please don't apologize. Because of you and other caring
individuals, this kitty experienced more kindness and compassion in
his final moments of life than he did in all his living ones. Because
of you, he was able to pass on from this world into the next gently and
peacefully, instead of painfully on his own.
