4425.0. "Abyssinian Question" by ICS::AREGO () Mon Mar 04 1991 13:50

    I have read that Abyssinians are not content with being an indoor
    cat.

    Do you find this to be true?

    This is not true. If a cat has known nothing but the indoors since
    kittenhood it will have no desire to go outside (usually). Once a cat
    experiences a taste of outdoors you could have a problem on your hands.

    If you have plenty of things inside your house to entertain the indoor
    cat, most will do just fine. We have several cat trees and condos,
    toys, etc., to keep our guys amused. Aby's are very active cats, but
    they can get plenty of activity confined indoors. There are several
    Aby owners here in Feline and I'm sure they will agree.

    I have two purebred cats that are leash trained and go out only under
    strict supervision. They look forward to and expect their outdoor
    excursions in the nice weather. It can become very time consuming for
    me so I don't recommend leash training unless you can keep up with it.
    It isn't fair to the cat to do it once or twice and then stop. I am
    known to spend a couple hours outside with the cats every night after
    work and on the weekends come the nice weather and most of the
    neighbors think I've got a screw loose.

4425.2Rolf likes it "inside" ...XNOGOV::LISAGive quiche a chanceMon Mar 04 1991 15:2214
    I have an Aby called Rolf. He is nearly one year old and he does not go
    outside. I take him out on a lead when the sun is out. He is perfectly
    happy. He has lots of energy, but he spends a lot of time playing with
    Florence who is a very frisky Oriental kitten.

    I have read that Abys like to go outside, but if you start as you mean
    to go on it's not a problem. The only problem I have is with my mum -
    she thinks I'm MAD to keep my cats indoors. Most cats in the UK are
    allowed outside, but that's another story ;-)

    My Aby is happy as an indoor only cat. I'm too afraid to let him go
    outside. I've taken him out with me a couple of times but he started
    getting too brave. I've afraid he would get picked up by someone if I
    let him be an indoor/outdoor kitty. Everyone raves when they see him.

    I wouldn't have an Aby as an only cat though. They really crave feline
    company, as well as human. He is buddy buddy with my other cat.

    Abys are "High energy" cats and require alot of activity to keep them
    happy. I think the best solution to that is a kitty-tease and a
    playmate.  :-)
