I've been asked to post this by a reader of this confernce. It is a note
that he posted to the AA notesfile and one that he would like to share
with the readers of FELINE in the hope that it may spark someone's
interest in that conference that may need it.

I have a short story I would like to share.....

The very day or day after I became sober, I was driving home
from the doctor. There was a requirement that I had to be sober
for seven days before I could check in for my particular
outpatient treatment. The doctor had given me librium
    to calm my shakes.

While driving along a major highway here in Vermont, I
saw what looked like a small scruff of fur on the side
of the road. A dead chipmunk or something perhaps?
As I almost passed it I noticed it started to MOVE.

I immediately stopped, only to find a truly pathetic
looking TINY kitten. I found out later that she was only
3 MONTHS OLD. What a horrible sight she was! Starving,
barely able to move, wheezing, her one eye was almost
closed and runny. I don't even know how long she out
there in the cold. Needless to say she looked like
a goner. I stayed up with her, fed her, held her and
hoped that she could make it. It was really a heartbreaker.

I went to the bathroom and all of a sudden it hit me!
I was looking in the mirror and I didn't look much
better than that kitten! Puffy like somebody punched me
out from the inside, blotchy, bleary eyed, very sick,
    ...pathetic.

I made a promise to that day that if this very very
sick little kitty was gonna make it...dammit so was I!!!

WELL...the kitty made it and is now a happy, hungry
rapidly growing high spirited individual who is very very
    lucky and very very grateful.

    And so am I.....

    Mark

Having someone to care for and to love can make a *BIG* difference in
a person's live. I don't want to know what drove Mark to drinking but
I do know that LOVE helped him to stop.

That was a wonderful story. Even in his misery, Mark had compassion.
I am so glad he stopped.....to check out the *piece of fur* and also
    *the drinking*.
