2228.0. "Looking for the silver lining......" by CRUISE::NDC () Tue Feb 14 1989 18:27

An idea has evolved out of some mail discussions between myself
and some other feliners which we wanted to propose to the group.
I'd like to get your feedback as to whether you would be interested
in doing this and whether or not you think it will work. I'd also
be interested in any suggestions you have to improve upon the
basic idea.

I'd like to organize a collection, once a quarter, the proceeds
of which would go to a deserving animal organization in memory
of all those Feline Family Members who have passed away during
the quarter. I think it would be a comforting and positive
action to take. It would honor the memory of those who have
been our companions and would help the lives of those animals
who have not found a home as yet. This is a common practice
in the event of a human's death when contributions are made
to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer
Society etc.
Participation would be strictly voluntary. I also feel that
it would be best to keep the identities of folks anonymous. If
someone wants another feliner to know they've made a contribution
in memory of that feliner's cat, then they can make that known
offline via vaxmail. I don't want to single people out either
for contributing or not contributing. When the donation is sent
I will make known the amount collected.
The selection of an agency to receive the contribution is an
issue I have not resolved as yet. I suggest that we allow
those folks who have suffered a loss that quarter to make the
choice. I'm open to suggestions as to how this should be handled.
Contributions will have to be made via US Mail as Interoffice
mail may not be used for such an activity on a regular basis. I
am very willing to coordinate each quarter's donation. If we
include a DEC matching gift card we double our donation. In the
unlikely event that no contributions are made, I will make the
donation myself.

FELINERs are some of the most compassionate people I have ever
been associated with. This gives us an opportunity extend our
love of cats a little further. I hope that you folks will find a
way to make this work.

  Thanks.
   Nancy DC

Count me in! Sounds like a wonderful idea, I usually try to
make an annual donation to 2 or 3 shelters myself, how great it
would be if everyone got together to do it. The only thing is that
everyone is so spread out across the country, I don't know how
you could coordinate donations across the vast distances, but maybe
someone has an idea on that.
I guess first a list of all quality, caring shelters would be
needed, how would such a thing be done? How could you check the
honesty and integrity of each shelter? Annual reports with break
downs of how the donations are used would have to be obtained.
Visits would probably have to be made to each shelter. Does
DEC recognize such donations? Would the company want to be involved,
what info. would be needed to show it is a legitimate organization
that DEC would want to be associated with? The double donations
    would be nice though..
Hope this is a good start for you... what were some of your
thoughts on the details of this idea?

Don't forget out Digital matching those donations. You might
want to suggest those that are donating anything $20 & up that
they submit to you a Dec matching form already filled out.

That way, they will actually "double" their donations.

    A suggestion.

re: .1 Shelters - I would accept a list of agencies with addresses
from members of the Feline notesfile. I would rely on their judgement.
I give to a fair number of places myself...my favorite is Treehouse
animal foundation in Chicago. They were written up in Cat Fancy
    a while ago.
Donations can be any amount from $1 to whatever. The point of
getting donations from a large number of folks is that they don't
have to give much. By combining 10 $2 donations we have $20 and
qualify for Matching Funds. As far as I know, Dec matches donations
to animal shelters and agencies as long as they're non-profit. Thats
why I said, in the unlikely event that there are no donations for
a quarter, I could certainly put in the minimum $15 donation myself
so the gift would qualify for matching funds.
As far as coordinating collections - that would have to be done
via US Mail. Folks would send the donations to my house and I'd
keep track of them there and write one check.
I'm not sure if this would work - one other idea would be to select
the agency first, then folks could make the checks payable to the
agency. That way you can "keep me honest" and get credit for the
donation on your taxes. I'm sure if I send in 10 $2 checks it
constitutes one $20 donation. We just need one badge number and
name for the matching gift certificate.

I think it is a great idea. I would like to see some funds go to

disease. They are non profit and subsist solely on contributions
    from individuals and groups.

I definitely would like to be counted in also. It is a terrific

go than I do, I will leave those decisions to you experts.

2228.7So far so good...CRUISE::NDCThu Feb 16 1989 11:1916
Well, so far the responses have been very positive. If anyone
has any reservations and doesn't wish to aire them publically
please feel free to send mail. If you wish, I'll enter them
myself so no one has to know where they came from
To those of you who have agencies to which you want contributions
sent - send the names and addresses to me via vaxmail and I'll start
    compiling a folder of them.
Unless I hear some dissenting votes, I'd like to plan to make
our first contribution this quarter. I"ll need some help keeping
track of kitties for memorial. I know Jesse James is on the list,
and Tiger, I'd like to add Cocoa too. Anyone else who should be
    included?

      Thanks for the encouragement.

This was taken from the bottom of a Winn Foundation Report published
in the CFA Almanac. The report detailed the work of Niels C. Pederson,
DVM, PhD, of the University of California at Davis, on Feline
Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). FIV has been previously called FTLV
    or Feline Aids.

There are many other studies being conducted by the Winn Foundation
also. One of those is the part that Taurine plays in Cardiomyopathy.

I will be happy to send you a copy. It is lengthy so I will not
    enter it here.

We think it's a great idea!
Maybe you could have a rotating list of a few very deserving
animal charities. I realize that all are deserving, but it might
be nice to limit our donations to a few of the MOST helpful and
deserving. That way we will have more impact.
I'm sure whatever you decide will be fine.

2228.13Lets do it!CRUISE::NDCWed Feb 22 1989 11:2634
I think that in general this idea is supported by the members of
the notes file. So I'm going to begin implementation. I have
two issues that need to be addressed:

    1. Since we can't use interoffice mail for this the only
option seems to be the US Mail. I'd feel better receiving
contributions at my home, but am a little uncomfortable with
publishing my address. Can anyone think of a good reason
NOT to put my home address in this notes file. I don't know
what I think is going to happen, I'm just wondering if its
    a good idea.

    2. I did receive one mail message from someone who had some
reservations about a particular agency. That person didn't
want their money going to that agency. So for anyone who
has any reservations about money going to a group, you need
only send mail to me and tell me which group that is and I
will make sure that your money does not go there.

I intend to make a contribution for this quarter which is
up in March. That means we've got to move. In general, it is
much easier for me if you send vaxmail to CRUISE::NDC or
ALL IN 1 mail to NANCY DIETTRICH CUNNIFF (space between the
    names) @MRO. (I think that's right, I don't use allin1 except
to forward my mail to CRUISE::NDC).
Send mail about either Agencies and Humane Societies WITH
ADDRESS - I just can't go looking them all up - or about
cats you wish to commemorate. That way I can channel all the
info into a separate mail folder which will make it easier to
    find than in notes.

Thanks all for your support and suggestions.
        Nancy DC

Insstead of posting your address in this file, people who want to
contribute could request your home address via MAIL, and then you
could respond to each one individually.

If you were to post your home address in this file, keep in mind
that your address then becomes public information. The participants
of FELINE are all people I would trust. However, we have no control
over who has access to this file both now and in the future. If
you have any reservations about posting your address, then I would
    recommend that you don't

Thanks for the input Nancy. i agree about making the address
public knowledge. What's more, my husband is against it as well
and since he pays 1/2 the bills he gets a pretty heavy say.

I guess that leaves two options. Either folks send mail and
request my address, which I'll happily provide, or we use my
    work address.
        Nancy DC

2228.16suggestionVAXWRK::DUDLEYThu Feb 23 1989 12:259
Since it against company policy to use the interoffice mail
system for personal use, I'd strongly advise against using
this method to collect the donations. Why don't you develop
a distribution list from the replies of interest to this
note and anyone who sends you MAIL. Then you can send your
home address and future dealings on this effort to those on
    the distribution list.

Of course, what I should have said in the previous reply

Marlene, great idea! I have a P.O. Box number that I use for the

2228.36Matching Gift ProgramVAXWRK::DUDLEYTue May 02 1989 14:3147

I thought that maybe some FELINErs might find the information below on
the Matching Gift program informative/useful. This is a portion of a
letter posted to the DIGITAL Notes file (note 779). I have received
permission from the author to cross post here in FELINE.

From the discussion in DIGITAL, it appears that it is not unusual for
a Matching Gift to take 1-2 years to reach a recipient organization, if
that organization is not currently in their database. If the organization
is in the database (i.e. they've received MG before) it takes ~6 months.
I would suspect that some of the Silver Lining recipients may not be in
the MG database.

Perhaps a quick outline of how the MG program works would help you
out. An employee fills out the card, sends it with their gift to the
organization, who fills in the bottom half of the card to acknowledge
receipt. The card is then sent back to us - if they've received money
from Digital's MG before, they will be in our database; the card is
processed and the check is sent out at the beginning of the following
quarter (please note this: checks are sent on a quarterly basis). If
an organization has never received MG money, we request additional
information (guidelines/charter, copy of IRS tax exempt 501(c)3
letter), if they meet our requirements (501(c)3, not political or
religious in nature), we send a request to Vendor Coding to have them
added to the database. Once this is done, they're there to stay and
any additional gifts can be processed immediately.

I can verify that matching gifts can take a looongggg time. I
regularly contribute to a shelter which is therefore in DEC's database,
and a contribution I made last year took five months to be matched.

The presently last note also indicated that if you ask the
receiver of the matching donation to send a photocopy of the
certificate/document which shows that IRS recognizes them as

I have a suggestion for the future - perhaps the Framingham
Animal Humane Society. I suggest them because I know they
are a dedicated group of volunteers; they handle a great many
cats (they also help with the dog pound - spay/neutering program,
blankets, canned food, toys);they pick up the vet bills for all
the feline strays who need neutering, medication and surgery; and
because they are trying to raise funds to build a shelter of its own
(they currently rent space in a private kennel).

Many of the Feliners have either called upon the FAHS for help
or have acquired pets thru them. Just a suggestion.

I'm with you Pat. I have become friends with Lenora Palmer who
works with them. That's how I came to meet Nestle - the 12 yr old
    Burmese that I wrote about.

I think I may have to come up with a different method of selecting
the recipient organization for next quarter. There have been so
many good suggestions and at 4-8 donations per year (8 if I split
each quarter's donation 2 ways) its going to be very difficult
to target any substantial number of these places. I'd like to
rotate the gift around more. I've had a request to send to the
Robert Winn Foundation again for this quarter and I intend to
honor that request. From now on, tho I think perhaps we should
try to pick an organization that has not been a recipient as yet,
unless there is some special reason for a repeat.

Personally, I don't think it matters if the recipient is a very
local agency or some world wide organization. As long as they're
doing work for the benefit of animals, thats all we need.

      Comments? Suggestions?

for the last quarter. They listed us under their Friends of the
Winn Foundation Category, Digital Equipment Corporation (Silver

There is also an annual report included. Some of the highlights:

"This excellent support (donations, etc) made it possible for the

we been able to give this amount of money for feline health studies
in one fiscal year, and it is perhaps the first time for any
    organization.

    Studies being funded include:

Relationship of Taurine to proper function of the feline heart muscle.
    Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)
Technique to take cat's Blood Pressure
Whether or not high blood pressure in cats leads to Hypertrophic

Studies involving the Basic Feline Immune System, Skin Disease,
Toxoplasmosis, and the cat's immune response to Ringworm Fungus.
    Blood Type Incompatibility
    Chronic Gingivitis
Genetic Identification of Inherited Feline Health Problems.

The foundation is also continuing to fund the study on the Abyssinian

Nancy,

I have been reading this notesfile for the last couple of months
and I think that this is a great place to learn about cats. When
    I first got into the notesfile I did a SET/SEEN so I didn't know
what this silver lining thing meant (I received my kittens sometime
in September I think so I didn't want to read everything in the
file). Today I was reading one of your other notes and I saw the
reference to this note so I read the entire note and all it's replies.
I think that this is a great notesfile and all the work that you
started is a great help to all the little furballs running around
in our homes making our lives happier (even though the little rascals
get all over the house and knock over out plants so that we have
to vaccuum up the room :-)). I will send you a check so that I
can contribute to the SLM also. I don't know how you'd like the
contributions coming in - I mean if we sent in a check, does the
entire amount go for that quarter or do you split it up for the
next one. It seems to me that sometimes you might get a lot and
then sometimes you wouldn't, maybe you could send in a certain amount
each quarter? Anyway, I'll get a check out to you at the P.O. Box
and thanks again for getting this thing started. I'm sure that
you'll be seeing more entries from me in this notesfile as time
    goes along.

I received this letter from the San Francisco Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to animals - Dated November 29, 1989

    Dear Ms Diettrich-Cunniff:

Thank you for your note and for forwarding the kind contribution
from the Feliners to the San Francisco SPCA to be matched by Digital
Equipment Corporation. We have completed the form and returned
it to the matching gift Coordinator. I deeply appreciate your
assistance in our efforts to aid the animals who need us after the
    earthquake.

Caring people, such as those at Digital Corp and from all over the
country have been exceptionally generous during this traumatic time
in San Francisco. Because of your support we have been able to
provide thousands of pounds of pet food, water and important supplies
to pet owners in our city and in the hardest hit regions of the
Bay Area. We also are providing temporary boarding to any pet who
cannot stay with their displaced owner and there are many grateful
individuals who are leaving their pet companions with us while they
    search for new homes.

And, in appreciation of you kindness, the San Francisco SPCA's
quarterly publication, OUR ANIMALS, will be sent to you for the
next year. Your copies will provide you with information about
animal welfare issues, pet care tips. and the many programs and
activities of The San Francisco SPCA.

We would not have been able to respond a quickly or effectively if
our animal loving friends had not responded so generously. Thank
you for being there in our time of need and for taking the time
and making the effort to involve Digital Corporation in matching
your gift to The San Francisco SPCA Earthquake Relief Fund.

2228.78Letter of thanks from Robert Winn.CRUISE::NDCDTN: 297-2313Thu Dec 28 1989 17:3340
I just receive the following from Robert Winn Foundation.

    December 20, 1989

    Dear Silver Lining Memorial Fund:

On behalf of the board of directors of the winn Foundation, I want
to thank you for your donation of $120 in memory of Bear, Talia
Manor's Zeus, Chloe & Zach, Keisha, Copy, Pishou, Becky, Chanucy,
Fluffy, Thomson, Gracie, Misty, Bully-boy, Robert Redfur and
    Kayleigh.

Because of donations suh as yours the Winn Foundation is able to
give research grants annually to deserving projects in the area
    of feline health.

This year is the twentieth anniversary of the Foundation and it
is amilestone in two other areas as well. For the first time,
we awarded grants at our February Board meeting totally nearly
$110,000. This is nearly double the amount we were able to fund
last year, and is substantially more than any other organization
has funded for feline health in any one year.

In addition, for the first time our endowment fund generated interest
income sufficient to fund one entire project.

A list of the projects which we funded this year is attached. They
range over a wide variety of subjects and come from many of the
finest veterinary institutions in the country. We are looking forward
to funding new and continuing protocols at our February, 1990 Board
of Directors Meeting in La Vegas, NV.

The primary goal of the foundation is to become financially able
to continue to fund a substantial number of worthy projects such
as these each year. your contribution will help us to attain that
    goal.

    Sincerely
Hilary Hemrich, secretary, Robert H. Winn Foundation

I didn't know where else to put this....

I just found this out. A couple of friends of mine are getting
married soon. They both are originally from here but now live
in South Carolina (read: HOT). Well they came back here for a
    	week for wedding plans etc.

When Cindi got home she found out that the [expletive] that
house and pet sat for them didn't give their two cats or their
new 3 month old puppy any water and the puppy no food! The
cats developed severe bladder infections (not to mention that
it was bad enough that one of them had a cast on her leg)
and had to be put down. Cindi then found the puppy in a hole
she dug, covered in vomit and foaming at the mouth. Seems this
jerk didn't tie up the pups like he was supposed to and the dog
catcher got them. The puppy contacted PARVA and was given about
a 10% chance to live...so she had to put the puppy down too.

I helped name one of these cats d**n it!! I am sooooo peeved
right now you can't believe it!! It has been suggested to Cindi
that she report the guy to the ASPCA.

Nancy, even though none of these animals has been mentioned in
here, do you suppose they could be added to next quarter's
Silver Lining? I'll try and remember to send some money along.
I don't know the puppy's name so I guess you can just call him
Cooper (Cindi's soon to be last name) and the kitties names
    	were Ozzie and Lita.

    	Thanks

    	JJ (who is still steaming!)

I would certainly report this person to the SPCA, the police, and
whatever. I'd take him to small claims court. I'd tell whoever recommended
him as a house sitter. I'd do worse....

re: .97 OF COURSE I'LL ADD THEM TO THE SILVER LINING MEMORIAL!
That's what its for, Judy. Any animal that touches our lives is
eligible whether that's a beloved pet of ours or just some poor
soul we see on the side of the road.

I am in tears over this! Your friend must be so overwrought and
probably feels responsible too. I'd take the <explative deleted>
petsitter to court, to the SPCA and anywhere else I could to make
him/her pay for this. That person should pay all the vet bills
not to metion a hefty sum for "pain and suffering". I know in
Mass you can call the Mass Bar referral for a recommendation of
a lawyer and that the initial consultation is either free or
(used to cost) costs a max of $15 for the first 1/2 hour. Perhaps
there is a comparable agency in your friend's state.

Let us know how she makes out and if there is anything we can do
    to help.
And make sure you tell your friend that her pets will be remembered
this quarter. If you like I can send you copies of the letters
when they go out to the recipients.

I will. She sent me mail today. This guy practically destroyed
the house. Cigarette burns in the carpet, ants etc etc etc.
The other puppy is fine (thank goodness!) other than needing
a bath and being de-flead. She had to bomb the house.

I gave her Nancy's mail address as she asked how to go about
    	making a donation.

When it comes time for the wedding and the honeymoon she's decided
to board the remaining animals. I suggested maybe a legitimate
pet sitting service might be cheaper. Either route is better
than the h**l she just went through.

Probably the worst part of this is the lack of faith they may feel
in their own judgement. To think that I trusted this person and that
they did this. I don't know if I'd ever trust my judgement again and
that's a horrible thing to live with.

2228.107Don't trust them with long periods.....IOSG::THOMPSONRNostalgia isn't what it used to beThu Jun 21 1990 13:2719
This is absolutely appauling and you MUST urge your friend to report him. I
use a pet sitting service here in the UK and your note has really shocked me
into thinking just how trusting I was.

I gave this person the key to my house and trusted her with my two furry friends
lives. As it happens she was very good and I know that they were well cared
for but now I appreciate how easily it could have been a disaster. It is so
AWFUL to have to think that some people would DELIBERATELY not feed or care for
your animals, even if that is what they are supposed to be doing. Some people
must have some really strange genes or have had a very uncaring childhood.

In future I think it is a good idea for all people using this kind of service
to try it out over a weekend first. That way any damage done to the pets will
hopefully not be too great. (damage to the house is always a risk I guess).
Then you'll know whether you can trust them for longer periods.

Thanks for making me think... even if it is horrible to think in that way.

Thank you very very much for your donation. I really appreciate it,
so do the cats. It costs me $10 a day to feed them and $55 a week

use. I pay for everything out of my pocket along with donations. I

My husband received a mail from JJ, concerning this notesfile and our
    cat.
He had been telling he was furious in FRIENDS.
This is what it's all about:

Last wednesday evening, we found our youngest cat on the grass, in a
    very funny possition.
When we went out to look what was the problem, we saw immediately that
    he had died.
Since he just turned one year, we thought that very odd.
We brought him into the house and phoned a vet.
Charles went out into the garden again, to see if he could find
anything at all, why the little rascal had died.
The nebour (spel?) told him, he heard a shot about an hour ago.
So immediately we tried to find something on Bengel's body. We
    couldn't.
The vet came in at 2300 hrs. and found a small, round hole in the side
    of Bengel.
We phoned the Police to tell them we suspected a certain person, and we
were told to come to the station the next day, so they could make up an
    official note.
The officer said, they would probably 'invite' the person over to the
station, and question him about it.
So far, nothing yet happened, and I'm pretty sure nothing will happen.

My question is (inspired by JJ): could you put Bengel on your next
list? We would very much appreciate that.
As for a donation, we live in Holland, and I don't have a clue how to
get any money over to you. So I'm sorry about that. 'Specially since
you do such good work with it, overthere.

    Thanks in advance!

    Tjitske -
Of course I'll add poor Bengel's name to the list. Perhaps your
husband would like to let these people know that their little cat
will be remembered. I usually post a note just before I send out
the donation for the quarter (next should be mid October) so at
that point remind me and I'll vaxmail you a copy of the letter and
your husband can send it to those folks in FRIENDS.

As far as making a contribution, I did take a couple of contributions
from the UK once. IN one case the person sent me British currency
and I converted it myself and in the other case the person had a
friend with a US bank account and the friend wrote the check to me.
If you really want to make a donation I'm sure we could work something
out. Of course, I'm sure there are also some very worthy organizations
over in Holland and you could always make a donation to one of them
    in Bengel's name.

    On anther subject:

Pat Brody sent me 4 copies of her newsletter with her thankyou note
and if anyone would like a copy just let me know.

    	Nancy,

To clear up some confusion. Tjitske's husband Charles, is the
one who posted the note in FRIENDS. Bengel is their kitty.
I sent a message to Charles which he in turn sent to Tjitske
since she gets in here from time to time and he doesn't.

    JJ,

    To me, yes!

    Nancy,

Thanks for your reply. I'll donate to a worthy course overhere. Seems
    more sense to me realy.
And I made the decision not to take another kitty, till our other kitty
died of old age. She, Hummel, is now 14 years, and may have problems
with yet another youngster. And she's too sweet to do that!
But after her, we'll definitly have other kitties. I couldn't do
    without cats. They're so lovable!

    Thanks again!

Time for a lesson in Dutch ;-)
Hummel is Dutch for "little one", like in "what a nice little kid/
animal" we would say what a sweet hummel.
The cat that got shot was called Bengel, which is Dutch for "little
devil" used to denote that a kid/animal is very lively and always
    up to something funny.

As far as I know the Hummel figurines were originally made by a
German family. They are also very collectable and quite expensive
    here in the UK.

My friends sister now lives over in the US and she went to some
kind of fair where one of the Hummel descendants?sp was personally
painting, naming and signing the figurines for a price.

I received the following letter with lots of info on Tufts this
    morning.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------
    Dear Ms. Diettrich-Cunniff:

Thank you for the Feliners' recent donations (and the matching
gifts they will provide) to Tufts University School of Veterinary
Medicine. We are grateful for your support and honored to receive
gifts made in memory of much loved cats, dogs and friends.

I am enclosing a few newsletters and brochures describing the
School of Veterinary Medicine for you to share with other Feliners.
I've also enclosed a description of our own Pet Memorial Program
and a photocopy of the types of plaques individuals have put up
on the entry wall of our Foster Hospital for Small Animals in memory
of the cats, dogs and other pets.

If you have any further questions about the Veterinary School, please
don't hesitate to call me. I can be reached at 508/839-7907

Again, thank yoyu for your generous and thoughtful support.

                                       Sincerely,

    Foundation.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------

    Dear Friends:

The death of someone close to us is a sad time in
all our lives. We hope that it will bring you some
comfort to know that you have contributed to a program
honoring the lives of Dr. David Verbridge, Dr. Francis
Fitzgerald and the artist B. Kliban.

Through your gift in memory of these friends, the
Morris Animal Foundation will work to improve the health
of animals by funding studies of animal health problems
in veterinary colleges across the country.

         Thank you for your gift.

                                     Sincerely,

    Dear Friends:

Thank you for your gift in memory of the cats:

    the dogs:

    Luna Cassie Jeaguert Sugar

    and Freddie the Cockatiel.

Animals mean so much to us in our daily lives and
losing a loved animal leaves a gap in our lives. A
memorial to improve the health of companion animals is a
good way to remember a favored pet.

Yet, though they mean so much to us, there is so
much that we do not know about their diseases and
ailments. During its 40 years, the Morris Animal
Foundation has funded 560 studies to help solve difficult
disease and health problems. Many advances havve been
made, but more knowledge is needed.

Your memorial will help perpetuate the memory of
these pets and aid the goal of better health for all
    companion animals. Thank you.

                                   Sincerely,

We have received another thankyou - this one from Tufts.

Also, this morning we received a Christmas card from Just Cats with
a "thankyou" for our donation. The picture on the card is hysterical!
Its a white cat with orange spiked hair on top of his head. He's
carrying a "Catosonic" boom-box on his shoulder and a bag full
of packages from "Cats Fifth Avenue". He's wearing a Leopard skin
vest and has a couple of studded leather belts on and funky sunglasses.
The card is hanging outside my cubical (MR03-1/M19) for any local
Feliner's who might like to see it.

In light of the rather scarely notes in HUMANE::DIGITAL about
"instant layoffs" I decided I'd better not wait for that British
check to be converted. I made my best guess of its value ($20)
and I have sent off the Silver Lining Memorial award to Nashua
Humane. The total amount was $80 which will turn into $160
    after Digital matches it.

Basically I keep track of all cats, dogs etc who have died during
the quarter. Virtually any and all animals or animal related folks
are qualified to be comemmorated. I make no judgement calls. I also
collect money - I usually hold checks until I'm ready to send out
the donation - its easier for me to keep track that way. I actually
keep a little folder next to the terminal here and everything related
    to SLM goes in it.

Usually during the quarter one or two folks make a request for a
recipient. I've never had trouble accomodating them. I generally
reserve the choice of recipient(s) to someone who has suffered a loss.
And, I try to rotate around some so that one agency isn't getting all
    the money.

When the time comes near to make the award I publish the name of all
to be comemmorated in a note here. That gives folks a chance to
make corrections. Then I print off the letter(s), fill out the
matching gift form(s) and send everything off to the recipients.

The only other duties I have are to enter the text of the various
thank you notes etc that we receive. I also keep information that's
been sent on hand and make it available to anyone who wants it.

Oh - I supply copies of the letters to anyone who requests one.

Its not much work and its very rewarding.

Don't even give it a thought. Its about time I figured out how
to get a check converted anyway. :-) Besides, I caused my own
problems by procrastinating on getting it converted. And I
think Baybanks is taking their time with this.

If I had to send money to the UK, I don't I'd know how

You don't have to, dollars are fine, how do you think we negotiate
our cheques when we sell DEC shares? :-)

	There are two ways:
	1. negotiate immediately, you get the rate of the day, you have to
	ask for this.

	2. Just mail it off, and let it go through, it takes about 5 working
	days.

From what I remember of doing this when I lived in the states, it was
the same, except that you had to keep enough in the account until it
was actually cleared at the other end - in case it bounced.

        Nancy,

When I was in UK, and wanted to send Sandy money to get some
stuff for me, I used to get an International Money Order at the
local bank. You tell them what currency you want paid out at
the destination, and then they do the conversion for you, so,
for example, let's say I wanted to send you $50 US. they would
convert $50 to pounds Sterling at the current rate, and I would
write them a cheque for the Sterling amount plus a small
handling charge. This way, everyone works in local currency
which makes things a lot easier.

I'm sure this works in reverse too - US to UK.

        Andy

I looked into this. International Money Orders cost 5 pounds. If you
want to send 20 pounds to someone, this is a very expensive way to do
it. In the end I found an American in the UK who wrote me a cheque and
    I gave them the cash!

Some U.S. banks let you write your personal checks in foreign
currency. Worth a call to ask. This really simplifies life, as
the bank does all the conversion automatically to debit your account
when they get the processed check from the
overseas bank. Of course, you don't know the exact amount in
U.S. funds to deduct from your balance until that happens.

The following handwritten letter arrived on Saturday from Nashua
    Humane:

    Dear Nancy,
Please thank all the "Feliners" for their memorial donations. Being
owner of 13 cats I can appreciate your love for them. I know how
    special Treize was to me.

After Treize died I fostered a litter of 3 kittens that needed to be
bottle fed. With much consideration I put them up for adoption when
they were of age. All of them were adopted. About a week later one
came back to the shelter because she was having alot of diarrhea. I
could not leave her alone in a cage so I took her home for the weekend.
Well, little "Teddy Bear" is still at my house -- her new home -- and
    doing fine.

Thank you again for your continued support of the shelter -- it is
    greatly appreciated.

designate the "Pat Brody Memorial Shelter" as the recipient for

Recenly I have had the misfortune of being the person that has removed
two kitties from the middle of the road after they had been hit.
I would like to give the people who hit these cats the benefit of

Folks,

I've had this conversation with Nancy D-C and a few other Feliner's so I'd
like to open this up to the general readership.

SLM monies are donated to a worthy organization in loving memory of our
fur-facies who have passed away. I'd like to propose that the funds also
be made available as a living memorial to kittes and their families who are
in need. Examples would be the little kitty who was hit by a car and rushed
to a vet by a fellow noter where the kitty happily ran up hundreds of dollars
in bills, or a feline who's family is in financial strain because of job
loss or extraordinary vet bills due to some emergency. I don't want to
say how this would work because we need lots of input, but my vision would
be that the SLM financial wizard would make the donation to the vet or
organization providing the care in the name of the kitty needing the care.

What do you think?? Good idea? Bad idea?

Mary

My first impression is that while it is an admirable thing to do, it
could cause some hurt feelings or frustration. How would the person
heading up this fund decide upon which kitty (e.g. vet or noter) should
receive the funds? Many noters pick up strays, bring them to the vets,
and then absorb the charges themselves. In these financially difficult times,
I believe it is probably a hardship - in varying degrees- to many people
who do this. Also, there are people who invest personal funds and never
    express it on the system.

I prefer to keep it a memorial to our pets without changes, Also, as
the Memorial exists - matching funds can be attained, whereas if it goes
to a private vet or to a noter, the matching funds will not apply.

I think more animals ultimately will be aided by giving the funds
collected, with the matching funding, to one or two organizations as
    is currently the practice.

Why not have one fund for "Help out fellow feliners/felines",
and one for the donation to the organization chosen for that
quarter's $$$? I think we usually pick two and split it anyway,
so why not make it a "50/50" fund?

We could designate a note for a "Help out fellow feliners/feline
Fund" requests, and after verification that it is a *real* need,
split up the pot accordingly. Verification could be a bit of a
touchy thing, but if we think this plan out fully.....
