3968.0. "Goodnight, sweet guardian" by CASDEV::LUST (PLEASE empty the bit bucket) Fri Aug 31 1990 11:36

When my daughter was pregnant, she and her husband decided that they
wanted a kitten, and went to a nearby shelter. They came home with
an adorable red boy, and memories of a beautiful little black and
white female. She was under a year old, and had obviously just had
a litter, though the shelter said there had been no sign of kittens
when they had gotten her. She had just a week left before she would be
put down, and her chances were not good. After talking it over, they
went back the next day and got her!

They named her Missy, and both kits settled in well. When they set up
the crib, Missy moved right into it. Diana was a bit nervous about
that, but they figured they'd watch closely when the baby came, and
cover the top if they had to. After Josh was born, Missy continued
to sleep in the crib, but always at the opposite end from the baby.

She adopted Josh, in fact. There was no doubt that he was HERS. Diana
learned quickly that she had to put the light on when she went into the
room, because any hand going into the crib in the dark was going to be
mutilated! Josh was NOT going to be taken away from her, or hurt in
any way. When he cried so did she... Strangers were watched VERY
closely... It was wonderful to watch her guard him.

Josh is now five, and she has slept with him every night that it was
possible, even throught the terrible twos! She was near him
constantly, and her love was something to behold.

Last Sunday afternoon, she started to act sluggish, and Diana nursed
her through the night, intending to take her to the vet first thing
Monday morning. She didn't make it to the vet. An autopsy revealed
a massive infection in her chest cavity, though she had had NO symptoms
prior to Sunday, and never even a wheeze or cough. The vet said that
even Friday it was probably too late.

She was a quiet little thing, petite and loving, and we will all miss
her. Sleep well, little one, and know that we will take care of your
    baby now.

    Linda

ps. Nancy will you add her to the Silver Lining memorial. Thanks.

    several good years.

Linda, what a loving eulogy for Missy. She may have lived a short life
but the loyalty, devotion and unconditional love she gave to the baby
will undoubtably live on forever. A true legacy of love!

What a beautiful story! It seems most cats I know hate kids!
Missy is now a real "guardian angel", always watching from kitty

all children should be so lucky as to grow with such a sweet, loving
guardian. what a touching tribute to a cat who obviously got as much
    love as she gave.

Sad but beautiful. I had a cat that adopted my oldest daughter when
she was born. He also was very protective. I bet your daughter also
    misses her little playmate.

I agree, that is a wonderful story. Just think, from now on that story
will be told to the child as it grows and then perhaps to their
children. This wonderful cat will live on forever, as it should be.

So very, very sorry in your loss of Missy! I, too, was
adopted as an infant in the same way by our Smokey--my
    guardian cat angel.

His greatest gift to me (he died when I was 4) is my strong
and complete love for all kitties.

May your Josh remember how well he was loved!

please accept my condolences as well. My Mom talks about Sam, a
Siamese cat we owned when I was born. Apparently Sam slept with me in
the crib and when I'd cry, he'd go make sure Mom got out of bed and
took care of me. He never let me be ignored. Missy sounds like a very
    special family member.
