334.0. "Announcements about FELINE Conference" by EXIT26::STRATTON (I brake for tailgaters) Thu Sep 25 1986 01:40

I am looking for a new home for this conference.  More information follows;
I apologise if you've seen this in another conference.

Jim Stratton

Unless someone offers to adopt this conference, I am going to copy the
file to tape and remove it from the system, sometime during the weekend
of 4-5 October.

There are several reasons why I can no longer moderate this conference.
Primarily, I simply don't have time.  I moderate over a dozen non-restricted
conferences on EXIT26 and RAINBW. Some of them are rather popular, like
ASKENET, MUSIC and SPORTS. Some days, I feel like I can't even keep up
with these conferences, let alone do any "real" work.

Also, performance on both machines (EXIT26 in particular) is being affected.
Most of these conferences are on EXIT26. I've been watching the links
to EXIT26 over the last few weeks. During the day, the number of VAX Notes
links runs from 12-24, and we reach the maximum number of links (40 on
EXIT26) almost every day. When this happens, people can't use MAIL,
ELF, VTX, and other network-dependent utilities.

I know I could raise the maximum links allowed on EXIT26, or I could move
some conferences to RAINBW. I could restrict the number of VAX Notes
links, either by asking Noters to avoid accessing the conferences during
the day, or by using a new feature of VAX Notes V1.1. However, I'd
much rather try to find new homes for these conferences, than force them
to be less active.

I will be keeping a few conferences that are directly related to the
work my group is involvewith; specifically, DIGITAL_DICTIONARY, ETP
("Electronic Technical Publishing"), INTERPRESS and SCITEX.

I'd like to stress that this decision is entirely my own, after some
discussion with our very good system manager, Bob Crews. My manager,
although he is fully aware of the existence of these conferences and their
effect on the systems and my time, does not even know (yet) that I'm
doing this. I have felt no pressure whatsoever from any other management,
or corporate policies, or users on either system, to remove these
conferences.

Feel free to reply here, or send me MAIL, if you want to adopt this
conference, or make other comments.

And thank you for your support, cooperation, and efforts to keep my
life, uh, interesting.

334.1good bye??STUBBI::B_REINKETue Sep 30 1986 12:412
    Is any body going to adopt feline - it is due to die in just
    a few days if no one can.
334.2joy-filled note file up for adoptionAKOV68::FRETTSWed Oct 01 1986 19:438

    I hope we can find a home for this conference because it has really
    been a joy to me and I'm sure to a lot of other people as well.

    I'll be keeping a positive thought that a home is found.

334.3Can't wait to tell my kitties about this good deedVAXWRK::LEVINEWed Oct 01 1986 20:327
The cat lovers of PK2 have banded together and successfully persuaded
the manager who owns YOGI to let us host this conference there. We are
going to try to copy the conference to YOGI tomorrow night after
hours. Details are still being worked out. Stay tuned.

334.4Conference moving Thursday night; will be unavailable thenEXIT26::STRATTONI brake for tailgatersThu Oct 02 1986 00:0411
        We'll be write-locking FELINE late tomorrow afternoon
        (Thursday) so it can be moved. If you happen to be reading
        it then, you'll probably get tossed out. Sorry, but we
        can't copy it if there are people using it.

        With luck, FELINE will be alive and well on YOGI Friday
        morning (if not sooner). Keep watching EXIT26::FELINE
        for news as it happens.

The disk on which this file resides has been having some severe problems
over the past 2 days, but seems to be OK now. We apologize for any pain
this may have caused the readership and hope that the disk is now fully
functional.

334.9Unavailable this weekendVAXWRK::LEVINEFri Jun 05 1987 19:599

	YOGI will probably be going down in about an hour for the weekend.
	They're going to be working on the roof and they will be shutting
	off all of the machines in our lab. We hope this will be complete
	by Monday, but there may be problems with this next week as well.

334.10Unavailability of conferenceVAXWRK::LEVINEMon Nov 02 1987 20:569
They're doing a lab renovation in our building which may cause this
conference to be unavailable on occassion because they are going to
be moving the ethernet cables about. YOGI will definitely be down
this Thursday the 5th from 5PM until sometime Friday morning. There
may be other times when it will be down sporadically.

334.12Lab workVAXWRK::LEVINEMon Jan 18 1988 16:098
Our lab is being expanded and various hardware will be moved about. Most
of this will be happening this week and next. The potential exists that
YOGI will be down for a number of days. We'll let you know when we have
more details. Feel free to send mail to the moderators (VAXWRK::SKALTSIS
or VAXWRK::LEVINE) if you have trouble reaching this conference.

334.13Accessing this file during working hoursVAXWRK::SKALTSISDebMon Mar 07 1988 15:286
    Due to the high amount of traffic FELINE is generating, and YOGI:: only
    being a 11/750, the moderators would like to ask the readers of this
    conference to please keep access down to a minimum during the hours
    of 8:15 to 11:30 and 13:00 to 17:00 EST.

334.19FELINE on the moveVAXWRK::SKALTSISDebThu Jun 09 1988 23:5512

    The FELINE conference will be set NOWRITE on Friday 10-JUN-1988 at
    approximately noon time. The file will be moved to VAXWRK and will
    be available early Monday morning (the reason for such a long
    unavailable time is because the machines are being powered down
    Friday evening because of lab work).

    Frequent readers of this file will need to change their notebook
    entry via a MODIFY ENTRY FELINE/FILE=VAXWRK::FELINE.

334.24Annual power shutdown this weekendVAXWRK::LEVINEThu May 17 1990 12:497
The Parker Street complex is having it's annual power shutdown this
weekend so don't expect to see the conference between 5 on Friday
and early Monday morning. It may take less time than that, but no
promises are being made.

Pam
334.25Please read 1.0 and take it's message to heartVAXWRK::SKALTSISDebFri Aug 24 1990 16:597
    I was able to modify the text to note 1.0 to laydown some ground rules
    for the conference. Unfortunately, the date of the note didn't get
    changed so unless you've explicitly read 1.0, you would not have seen
    it. I'd like to ask everyone to please make a point of reading it and
    take what you read to heart.

334.26Please welcome Jo as out 3rd active co-moderatorEMASS::SKALTSISDebThu Mar 14 1991 23:3215

    I'd like you all to join Mary Tamir and me in welcoming our third
    moderator, Jo Cordes-Brown. Since Mary and I are out of the office so
    much, and the conference has been so busy as of late, we felt we needed
    some help. Jo (alias WR2FOR::CORDES_BRO and MUTTON::BROWN) has been an
    active noter in FELINE for many years, is well versed in using NOTES and
    has a bretty good idea of what is in this conference (and where it is),
    so we thot that she'd be a good choice for a moderator. And the fact that
    she has about 20 cats made us suspect that she would be crazy enough to
    accept. :-) Personally, I think that the FELINE readership is lucky she
    agreed to help moderate.

    Jo, welcome aboard and good luck!

    Thank you for the nice introduction. After participating in this file
    for the last 5 years and seeing how tough the moderator's job is, I have
    to say that I am a bit surprised at myself for taking it on!! :^) I
    couldn't have asked for better teachers than Mary and Deb though. So,
    all I ask is....give me a break, I'm new at this!! ;^)

    Folks, Feline will be moving to the left coast sometime late this
    month. When that happens, we will archive this conference and start a
    new one. We will keep you up to date on what is happening.
