3939.0. "Whisker Problem" by KACIE::SINGER () Fri Aug 24 1990 14:37

    About one month ago I adopted a kitten from the Hopkinton
    Humane Society. The woman thought the mother was Siamese
    and the father possibly a Russian Blue, although my
    vet said the kitten looks more like a Korat.

    Anyway, I have been noticing his whiskers, they seem to
    be falling out, right now he only has one on the right
    side of his face (he does have whiskers nearer to his
    chin, but only one nearer the nose). He did have whiskers
    before, they were very thick.

    Does anyone have any information on why his whiskers are
    falling out? Or why they were so thick? The whiskers that
    he has closer to the chin are soft. I do have another cat
    and his whiskers are all soft.

    Thx
    Randi

3939.1Diet Deficiency?GWYNED::JPORTERFri Aug 24 1990 18:358
    Maybe something is not quite "right" in his diet. Take him to the
    Vet's to make sure that there is nothing seriously wrong.

    Hair, fur, fingernails (and probably whiskers!) are all a form of
    protein-- sometimes taking vitamin E helps...

    (I don't think cat's are too different from humans in their dietary
    needs...)
3939.2related problem?BTOVT::MUNROE_RI set my feet upon the rockFri Aug 24 1990 18:4611
    I think my kitten (3 mo.) has a related problem.

    She's a black medium-hair and lately over the last week her fur is
    turning more and more greyish white. I can't really describe it except
    in certain light she looks like she's getting really old. I feed her
    Iams, and canned kitten food. She eats and drinks normally and plays
    fine. The fur looks more and more frizzy and light grey every day.

    Does anyone out there in cat-note-land know what this might be?

3939.33 mo-old kitten= fur transition?GWYNED::JPORTERFri Aug 24 1990 19:0910
    Kittens are like babies-- their baby-hair (fur) falls out and their
    adult fur starts to grow in its place -- maybe this is what both of you
    are experiencing with your kittens(?)

    If their behavior is normal it is probably nothing serious. You should
    wait a while to see what happens with the "new" fur that is growing in.

    (I am still trying to find a home for AXEL my 3yr old, neutered
    male. I have already placed the 1 yr old female -- THANK GOD!)

    I'm pretty sure my Willy lost a lot of whiskers in his begining. I
    remember wondering if they would grow back & they have.
