4275.0. "Scruffy needs a prayer" by TJT01::ARMITAGE () Fri Dec 28 1990 10:30

    Hi,

I know this is the cat notes but you've been so helpful in the past
with my kitten Flirtaysha that I was hoping you could help me with my
dog Scruffy. I got Scruffy almost 11 years ago. My parents bought him
for me because they had to put my first dog down due to cancer. Well,
last night before I left work my mother called and asked me to take
Scruffy to the vets because he has been vomiting for the past 48 hours.
I live in an apartment so the dog has been living with my parents. I
called my vet who couldn't take him so I decided to try the Amherst
Animal Hospital and I got an appointment with Dr. Gleason. I think he
is one of the best vets I've seen. To make a long story short, Dr.
Gleeson kept the dog overnight and may have to put him to sleep today
because he suspects pancreaitis. Actually, he says he could operate if
necessary but I know that the risks at this age just aren't worth the
possible results. He is running blood tests at this moment and I am
calling him at 10 for the results. It just came as such a shock since
Scruffy was hyper as ever at the office but he appeared to be in
excrutiating pain during the exam. Will everyone please say a prayer
for Scruffy so that I can have a little more time with him.

    Hi Lisa,

The vets at Tufts suspected pancreatitis in Bigfoot during 1989.
At the end of the year, it was determined that he had a cyst on his
pancreas and had to have his spleennd part of his pancreas removed at
the tender age of 12. He did wonderfully.

You know how Scruffy feels and, between you and your vet, you can
decide what's best for Scruffy. I just wanted to give you a success
    story.

         Best of luck with Scruffy!

Thank you for all the well wishes. Andrea-I will seriously take your
story into consideration when making the final decision. I just got
off the phone with Dr. Gleeson and he wants to try keeping Scruffy off
food and water for a couple of more days. He seems to feel at this
point that since Scruf is doing mentally well that by
restricting/eliminating his intake the pancreas will shut itself off
and no further treatment will be needed. I'm hoping for the best.

4275.8Another success story........BOOVX2::MANDILEWed Jan 02 1991 12:0211
My dog (seven yr old Airedale) just had a bout with
pancreaitis (sp) and they kept him off of food & water
for a few days.....and he is fine now. Our vet said
it was due to him getting people food, especially pizza
and such.....mom was known to feed him whole slices of
pizza, etc. They put him on Hills Science C/D canned,
    (I think) and he recovered.

    Our prayers are with you!

4275.9SCRUFFY"S BETTER!!!!TJT01::ARMITAGEWed Jan 02 1991 14:5213
    YIPPEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Scruffy came home on Sunday. Can you imagine a Cairn Terrier that
weighs 26lbs! Needless to say he is on a very stick diet. He is
getting Science diet prescription r/d. Only 1/4 of a can twice a day
with no snacking between meals. His liver is also 5 times the size it
should be and that is why he was in so much pain. He did stop
vomitting and has been very tired but I would be too after that ordeal.
The vet feels that with the proper diet and a significant weight loss
he should be ok. Thank you for your concern and prayers. They meant
the world to me and the scruffers. It is going to be a Happy New Year
    after all.

    Hi Lisa,

Hooray!!!! I'm so happy to hear about Scruffy.

Bigfoot is on a diet of 1/3 Feline R/D, 1/3 9 Lives and 1/3 Blue
Seal (as are the other two) and he is doing very well. He hasn't been
    sick for a year!

Here's hoping Scruffy does as well. Please give him a big hug for
    me!
